What To Donate To A Food Bank And What To Avoid

So, youre ready to donate food to your local food bank. Thats great! Whether youre starting a food drive or just planning to grab a few extra items for donation while out grocery shopping, there are a couple of things you should know about what you can donate and what food banks wont accept.

What food you CAN donate to your local food bank:

This part is pretty easy. Food banks accept dry and canned food donations. What does that mean? Basically, any food that is shelf-stable or nonperishable you can keep it in your pantry and it wont go bad. And remember, only donate food that hasnt reached its sell-by date yet. Specifically, food banks often need items like:

Thats definitely not an exhaustive list but it covers a lot of what food banks regularly need. Additionally, some food banks accept personal care and household items, since many families struggle to afford these items and they arent covered by other food assistance programs like SNAP.

If youre still stumped about what to donate, just look in your own pantry. Families struggling with hunger often cant afford the staples that we normally have stocked at home. So, check your pantry out and go from there. Even specialty foods like olive oil, dressings, or marinades can be helpful if they dont need to be refrigerated.

Startling Facts About People Affected By Homelessness

  • California and New York have the highest rates of homelessness throughout the United States, according to the National Alliance to End Homelessness. Out of every 10,000 people in California, 126 are homeless, while in New York, 94 are homeless for every 10,000 people.
  • According to the National Coalition for the Homelessness, mental illness affects 20-25% of the homeless population in the United States.
  • According to the HUD, on a single night in 2021, one-quarter of all homeless people in sheltered locations were children under the age of 18. Additionally, 8% of all sheltered adults who were homeless were veterans.

Making An Everyday Effort

  • 1Keep a food kit in your car. Most people don’t have access to the homeless community. There might be the same person we drive by or pass on the street, but other than that, it’s totally random. So be ready to help by keeping a food kit in your car . A gallon-sized resealable bag or two with non-perishable items is a great way to always be ready.
  • As for non-perishable items, think the basics. Granola bars, canned fruit or vegetables, peanut butter, maybe a candy bar — pretty much anything you can open and eat .
  • Don’t forget pet food! It’s estimated that around 10% of homeless people have pets to keep them company. That’s 1 out of every 10! Pet food can be just as useful — if their pets aren’t fed, that’s one more thing they have to worry about.
  • 2Have a few gift cards on hand. You know how practically every checkout line nowadays has row upon row of gift cards readily available to inspire that impulse buy? Instead of needlessly spending money, spend it for a good cause! Having a gift card or two is super easy to carry around. Now where to?XResearch source
  • Keep it simple, like Starbucks, McDonald’s, Walmart, or Target. Even $5 would be an amazing gesture. Gift cards are much easier to carry around wherever you go!
  • 3Keep your recyclables. If your state has a refund value on them, donate them to a non-profit that helps the homeless. Refundable containers are an equivalent of cash. Never give them directly to the homeless.

Are There Any Homeless Charities You Should Not Donate To

Not every charity you come across is genuine. There is a very thin line between legit charities and ones that are a scam. Below are characteristics of charities you should NEVER donate to.

    • Do not donate to big charities most of them are less transparent with how they spend the money. They are likely to divert the money to other things such as disaster relief efforts.
    • Some charities pressure you to donate now. Some even go to an extent of making you feel guilty for not donating. Do not donate to such charities. A trustworthy charity may welcome your donation when you feel ready.

Do not donate to charities that send you a thank you message for a donation you cant recall making. It is a trick used by scammers to lower your chance of resisting.

    Getting Involved In Your Community

  • 1Work with local church programs. They go by different names in every town, but one is your local Catholic Charities which is a clearing-house for this and other programs.XResearch source They aren’t interested in whether you’re a Catholic, or not, for the record. They’ll be grateful for any help you can give!
  • Whether your help is in the form of volunteering your time, money, food, or clothing, you will be making a positive difference. Those that go to churches looking for help aren’t necessarily religious they just know they’ll reach people that are inclined to help.
  • 2Get a list of shelters. The Internet and the yellow pages will be super helpful here. Once you have a list comprised you can:XResearch source
  • Make phone calls, asking how you can help each one. Some may need volunteers, some may need food, and yet others may need personal items, etc.
  • Have information at the ready when you are talking to a homeless person. Giving them a can of food feeds them today, but telling them about a shelter feeds them for much, much longer.
  • 3Contact your local soup kitchen. Why stop at donating the food when you can help prepare it? Homeless people don’t just need food, they need a smiling face to go along with it. You can restore their faith in humanity by just lending a helping hand like they’re a worthy human being.

    Handing Out Care Packages

There are a lot of ways to hand out care packages for homeless individuals. The easiest way is to give it to a random homeless person you meet on the street.

If you can convince a couple of friends to make their own homeless care kits, then all the better. You can group them together and go to homeless shelters or local public parks that the homeless frequent. If youre not comfortable approaching a random homeless person, you can also partner with a local homeless charity. Theyre usually swamped with homeless people asking for basic necessities so those care kits would be very much welcome.

If youre personally giving out the care kits, just remember to ask them first if they want help. Some homeless individuals dont readily accept help from anyone, either because of pride or lack of trust in strangers. I mean, if youre on the streets for days, youve probably seen enough to convince you not to accept anything handed out by a complete stranger. So if some of them refuse to accept what youre giving, dont be offended. There are a lot of homeless whod be more than willing to accept those care packages.

That said, handing out care packages is one of the best things you can do for the homeless. Sometimes, it only takes a single act of kindness to make someones day. And at the end of the day, a little bit of kindness is all this world really needs.
