Food Banks Get Creative In Managing Volunteers

After months of making do with far fewer volunteer resources during the pandemic, hunger relief organizations are getting creative as they work to reinvigorate their volunteer ranks.

Some are finding value in relying on clients as volunteers. Others are finding ways to engage highly skilled workers for special projects. And a growing number are using software to help recruit and manage volunteers , replacing manual tasks with more streamlined processes.

As one of only 11% of nonprofits nationwide earning recognition as a Service Enterprise from Points of Light for upholding high standards in volunteer management, Second Harvest Heartlands approach is notable.

The Minneapolis, MN-based food bank divides its volunteer workforce into three categories that are delegated different tasks, collectively contributing to the singular goal of eradicating food insecurity, said Julie Greene, Director of Volunteer Engagement.

Most volunteers participate in recurring tasks like packaging bulk produce, sorting food, and delivering food boxes. Others function in ongoing support roles, in which they may make weekly food deliveries, help clients with SNAP applications, or do database support. The third category, known as pro-bono volunteers, consists of retired professionals or seasoned volunteers who undertake advisory roles to assist with the swift execution of high-end projects.

Given ongoing challenges, the need for volunteers remains as high as ever.

Every volunteer experience is a little different. Here are some things you might do as a volunteer:

    • Sort and pack food: You can keep the shelves stocked by assembling food boxes for distribution.
    • Assist at mobile pantries, drive-thru pantries, and no-contact distributions: Help your neighbors feed their families.
    • Deliver meals: With many communities sheltering in place, you can help ensure our most vulnerable neighbors have the food they need while staying safe.
    • Glean and garden: Volunteers collect food left in the fields after harvest or help tend the food bank or food pantry’s community garden.
    • Volunteer from home: Some food banks have moved their volunteer shifts online and are asking volunteers to help fundraise or spread awareness.

Your safety is a top priority. The Feeding America network follows all Center for Disease Control and local guidelines for sanitation, hygiene, and social distancing to ensure staff and volunteers are safe. This may include masks, additional handwashing stations, gloves, reduced group sizes, and other safety precautions.

Fort Bend Students Fight Hunger At Houston Food Bank

Paisley Tang, a Student Hero, calculates shift production numbers with Alexa Garza, a volunteer service representative.

Everything’s bigger in Texas even the food banks.

The Houston Food Bank is the largest in America, and it runs like clockwork. Day after day, shift after shift, a throng of volunteers file in through the large double doors and join a project area. They sort and weigh frozen meat at the cold dock, peer through donated foods and toss expired or mislabeled items at the cold dock, and, in Aisle 8 of the warehouse, pack food into boxes for Houstons senior communities.

These volunteers are the driving force behind the Houston Food Banks ability to service over 1,600 hunger relief charities in 18 counties and provide more than 150 million meals annually. But unbeknownst to many, a group of high school students, including many from Fort Bend County, works tirelessly to ensure each shift runs smoothly.

These are the Houston Food Banks Student Heroes more affectionately known as purple-shirts and they play a vital role in the food banks operational efficiency.

Student Heroes work alongside food bank staff in each project area to assist volunteers, especially those serving in the 308,000-square-foot facility for the first time. They provide guidance, share tips, answer questions and show others how to efficiently complete project tasks.

Alexa Garza, an adult volunteer service representative at the Houston Food Bank, praised their contributions.
