Food Banks In Southwest Florida Gives Out Food To Families In Need

Reporter:

Harry Chapin Food Bank in Cape Coral had hundreds of cars full of people in need of food lining the roads.

Families say getting food from food banks helps them save money for other bills. Because everythings more expensive now.

Some people are doing anything they can just to stay afloat and that means relying on food distributions like this one today in Cape Coral.

Hundreds of cars lined up more than an hour before the Harry Chapin Food Bank started handing out boxes of food.

The need was bad during the pandemic. Harry Chapin says its worse now.

Many boxes were filled with meats, vegetables, and bags of apples on the side. There was enough food to feed hundreds of families who lined up at the Ocean Church in Cape Coral.

Jose Varona, a recipient at Harry Chapin Food Bank said, everything is so expensive. You know the food, the gas. Its terrible. I dont see any getting any better. But hopefully, we have this place that helps us out.

Harry Chapin Food Bank holds this food distribution every Friday and has no plans to stop.

Varona said he needs this kind of help because making ends meet is harder than ever.

Situation is really bad you dont want to leave the house unless you have to, Varona said.

Hes not alone with gas prices through the roof, Julie Snow saves her gas anywhere she can.

Lot of times well shut the car off and wait because the lines are extremely long all the time, Snow said.

Tax Filings And Audits By Year

The IRS Form 990 is an annual information return that most organizations claiming federal tax-exempt status must file yearly. Read the IRS instructions for 990 forms.

If this organization has filed an amended return, it may not be reflected in the data below. Duplicated download links may be due to resubmissions or amendments to an organization’s original return.

Nonprofit organizations that spend $750,000 or more in Federal grant money in a fiscal year are required to submit an audit covering their finances and compliance. Some of these are program specific, while others, called single audits, look at the entire organization. Nonprofit Explorer has PDFs of these audits for some nonprofits for fiscal year 2015 and later. Theyre provided by the Federal Audit Clearinghouse.

What We Aim To Solve

Harry Chapin Food Bank serves children, families, seniors, and veterans of Southwest Florida who are hungry or food-insecure. Children who are food-insecure do not have the energy to focus, engage, learn, and grow. Poor nutrition also has a long-term negative effect on a childs physical and mental health, academic achievement, and future economic productivity. Families that are food-insecure not only struggle to put food on the table, they often struggle to pay for rent, utilities, and childcare, among other bills. Food pantries, once considered a resource for temporary emergency food assistance, are now part of many households’ regular coping strategies. Seniors who are food-insecure live on a fixed income, struggle with health issues that can drain their resources, lack transportation, and are socially isolated. They often have nutritional deficiencies which exacerbate their medical issues. The stigma associated with asking for help further compounds the problem.
