Long Island Cares is one of almost 200 food banks across America that provides food to people impacted by hunger and food insecurity. Harry Chapin Food Bank Distributes Food At New Location In Lehigh Acres

Reporter:

The Harry Chapin Food Bank is back in Lehigh Acres, where hundreds of families will line up for their mobile pantry on Saturday.

The lines at food banks have gotten longer thanks to inflation.

When Harry Chapin provides food to these families, it allows them to spend their money elsewhere, either gas, cars or bills, and in some cases, even their medications.

The Harry Chapin Food Bank used to serve about 250,000 people each month, but now they are trending toward 300,000.

They serve 600 families alone at the Lehigh Acres distribution site that has been on Tuesdays at Copperhead Golf Course for years, but as of this week, it is permanently closed.

So Harry Chapin is temporarily moving the distribution about five miles away to Harns Masch Middle School, at 1820 Unice Avenue North, to ensure the people relying on them will still have a place where they can pick up food.

Were that safety net in our community that they can rely on somewhere to go to get that food, said Ryan Uhler, marketing and communications director for the Harry Chapin Food Bank. Its heartwarming in that aspect, but Ill tell you that its heartbreaking to know that there is a need out there.

For some like Jose Varona, everything is expensive.

Its terrible, Varona said. I dont see any getting any better. But hopefully, we have this place that helps us out.

The drive-through distribution begins at 10 a.m. at Harns Marsh Middle School, at 1820 Unice Avenue North.

Hope For The Homeless

With all of the positive publicity surrounding the debut of the first MORE Van, NBTY Helping Hands approached Long Island Cares to create another MORE program. Named Hope for the Homeless, this second MORE, sponsored by NBTY, supports the often invisible homeless population. It focuses on their specific needs, providing housing information, housing referrals, ready-to-eat emergency food and personal hygiene items. Hope for the Homeless also partners with both Nassau and Suffolk Counties on various homeless programs that bring awareness and resources to people in need.

What We Aim To Solve

Harry Chapin Food Bank serves children, families, seniors, and veterans of Southwest Florida who are hungry or food-insecure. Children who are food-insecure do not have the energy to focus, engage, learn, and grow. Poor nutrition also has a long-term negative effect on a childs physical and mental health, academic achievement, and future economic productivity. Families that are food-insecure not only struggle to put food on the table, they often struggle to pay for rent, utilities, and childcare, among other bills. Food pantries, once considered a resource for temporary emergency food assistance, are now part of many householdsâ regular coping strategies. Seniors who are food-insecure live on a fixed income, struggle with health issues that can drain their resources, lack transportation, and are socially isolated. They often have nutritional deficiencies which exacerbate their medical issues. The stigma associated with asking for help further compounds the problem.

Harry Chapin Food Bank Launches New Mobile Pantry On Pine Island

Friday morning, the Harry Chapin Food Banks new emergency mobile pantry arrived at the Pine Island United Methodist Church at 5701 Pine Island Road. The truck was there from 10 a.m. to noon.

We are here today with our mobile pantry to help people who are struggling right now because of red tide and the affect on the economy, said Richard LeBer, president and CEO of Harry Chapin Food Pantry.

Red tide in salt water and green algae in fresh water have hurt businesses, particularly in the tourism and hospitality industries, and made it difficult for their employees and other residents to make ends meet and feed their families.

The Harry Chapin food pantry has been a presence in Fort Myers Beach for the last five weeks from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays.

Weve had over 160 families per week come to the food pantry on Fort Myers Beach, LeBer said. Thats probably 500 individuals and 21,000 pounds of food. Were waiting to see how today goes. Weve had tremendous support from several churches and the Pine Island Chamber and friends.

The pantry may continue on subsequent Fridays, depending on the response to the first one and whether the location can be finalized for further distributions.
