School is out, hunger is not! Need extra food? The Harry Chapin Food Bank now has Harrys Helpings boxes available for local food-insecure families.
Each box contains 15-20 pounds of nutritious, non-perishable foods
for an average of 15 family meals.

A Push To Clear Out Pantries As People Head North
FORT MYERS, Fla. The Harry Chapin Food Bank, in Fort Myers, has long been the destination to sort out millions of pounds of food dry, produce, dairy, frozen – and get all of it to the people who need it.
The need is very pronounced in 2022.
“The sad truth is that we have a lot of hungry people,” said Richard LeBer, president/ceo of Harry Chapin Food Bank. “Mostly working families and seniors on fixed incomes for whom this is a very expensive place to live. At the same time, we have no shortage of food.”
LeBer said the food bank is feeding “about a quarter of a million people” each month.
“Our numbers shot up during the pandemic to more than double what they were, pre-pandemic,” said LeBer. “They’re coming down some since then but still running about 30 percent more than during the pandemic.”
As the calendar shifts from March into April, this also brings a focus on the tens of thousands of people who leave Southwest Florida to head north and go “back home”. This brings about the potential of thousands of pantries full of uneaten food.
Lee County Solid Waste & Waste Prevention is, once again, launching its Donated Not Wasted program, for people to offer any unopened canned or dry goods. The dates for 2022 are April 4-18.
“In 2021, we had our highest amount collected with 9,312 pounds of food that was given back to the community,” said Amanda Condamina, public utilities operations manager for Lee County Solid Waste & Waste Prevention.
Feed Thy Neighbor Collier And Lee
Feed Thy Neighbor, a nondenominational, nonprofit outreach meals organization, operates two kitchens, one at St. Monicha’s Episcopal Church, Naples, and one on Pennsylvania Avenue in Bonita Springs. It prepares and distribute food for those in need. It is accepting donations at its website, feedthyneighbor.us.

Drop Off Items At True Fashionistas
True Fashionistas Designer Resale, a consignment store in North Naples, is collecting supplies and nonperishable food donations and delivering them to Hurricane Ian victims in devastated coastal areas of East Naples and Naples Park in North Naples.
For details on types of donations needed, check the store’s . True Fashionistas is open for drop-offs from 10 a.m. to 3: p.m. now through Saturday, Oct. 8, at Suite 104 in the Galleria Shoppes, 2355 Vanderbilt Beach Road.
The store needs volunteers to help organize and distribute donations.

Shucker’s & The Cottage Bar Employee Relief Fund Started
A relief fund has begun for employees of a Fort Myers Beach restaurant at 1250 Estero Blvd.
Brian Nagle of Shucker’s & The Cottage Bar announced the fundraiser Monday after Hurricane Ian wiped out the restaurant Thursday. The goal is to raise $30,000.

“I went down the day after the hurricane and this is my 700 seat restaurant,” he communicated to The News-Press and provided a photo of what’s left of his restaurant.
“I found this flag in the rubble and just didn’t feel right stepping over it. Figured it could give my people a little hope because I have nothing else to offer. Thank you.”

St. Matthews House is grateful to be one of the 150+ partners working with the Harry Chapin Food Bank. Through partnerships like this, were able to extend our reach and help even more people struggling with hunger across Southwest Florida.

St Katherine In North Naples Hosting Luncheon For Ian Victims
A North Naples church known for its popular Greek festival will host a luncheon this weekend to benefit Hurricane Ian victims.
The luncheon is set to begin at 11:30 a.m. Sunday after 9:30 a.m. worship services at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church 7100 Airport-Pulling Road.
All donations will go to those in our area most in need after last week’s hurricane.
“It is a moment for action and selfless love, no one else but us should be responding to this suffering and great need,” the Rev. Demetre Mott, presiding priest of the church community, said in his message to parishioners.

The food bank is expanding its locations to help get food to more people. It will be distributing water and food from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Oct. 6, at the following locations:
- Cape Coral Elementary: 4519 Vincennes Blvd, Cape Coral, FL 33904. CanoHealth Group will be on-site with a medical mobile unit offering free services, including measuring blood pressure, heart rate and glucose checks, wound care, and some lab services depending on the case.
- Sacred Heart: 211 W Charlotte Ave, Punta Gorda, FL 33950. It will also be holding normal distributions from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the following locations:

Harry Chapin Food Bank Providing Food Water To Coastal Lee County
The Harry Chapin Food Bank is partnering with State Rep. Adam Botana to help provide food and water to people in the coastal areas of Lee County. The food bank says it sustained roof damage at its Fort Myers distribution center but is still able to provide people with food and water from that facility, WINK News reports.

Harry Chapin Food Bank serves children, families, seniors, and veterans of Southwest Florida who are hungry or food-insecure. Children who are food-insecure do not have the energy to focus, engage, learn, and grow. Poor nutrition also has a long-term negative effect on a childs physical and mental health, academic achievement, and future economic productivity. Families that are food-insecure not only struggle to put food on the table, they often struggle to pay for rent, utilities, and childcare, among other bills. Food pantries, once considered a resource for temporary emergency food assistance, are now part of many households’ regular coping strategies. Seniors who are food-insecure live on a fixed income, struggle with health issues that can drain their resources, lack transportation, and are socially isolated. They often have nutritional deficiencies which exacerbate their medical issues. The stigma associated with asking for help further compounds the problem.

Please note: All volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes. Weekday opportunities at Harry Chapin Food Bank warehouses have a minimum age requirement of 16. Saturday volunteering at HCFB locations have a minimum age requirement of 14, and 14-year-olds must be accompanied by an adult.

Collier Community Foundation Reactivates Relief Fund
The Collier Community Foundation has reactivated its Collier Comes Together Relief Fund to help Hurricane Ian victims.
This allows the foundation to get immediate aid where it’s needed most, according to the foundation’s press release.
One hundred percent of the donations are given to nonprofits helping victims and their families without administrative fees.
“The fund serves to assure donors’ support will reach its intended cause,” the press release said. “Fraudulent sites pop-up following a disaster or emergency that mislead donors about where their funds will go.”
