New research by The University of Calgary identifies the direct link between government policy and food bank use.
Using Daily Bread Food Bank data, the report reveals that that food bank visits directly rise with increases in rent, with falls in minimum wage and with reductions in the disability benefits available to individuals requiring social assistance.
Great Plains Food Bank Volunteer Save To Favorites
The Great Plains Food Bank regularly needs volunteers to help process about twenty percent of the food we distribute to our 235 partner agencies each year. Last year, nearly 5,500 volunteers donated over 18,000 hours to the Great Plains Food Bank. Our volunteers sort, label, and repack donated and bulk foods and assemble boxes and bags for special programs. Our goal is to provide the best possible volunteer experience for each of our volunteers.

Choice Bank Donates $20000 To Great Plains Food Bank
Bettering the places we live begins with making sure our community is fed. This is why Choice Bank donated $20,000 to the Great Plains Food Bank, as part of a commitment to donate $100,000 over the course of five years.
A $20,000 gift, were able to provide 60,000 meals with that. That can certainly go a long way to feed a lot of people that are in a difficult situation, said Jared Slinde, Communications Manager for Great Plains Food Bank.

The Great Plains Food Bank is committed to ending hunger in North Dakota and Western Minnesota. Every year, the Great Plains Food Bank collects, warehouses, and distributes more than 21 million pounds of food that would have otherwise gone to waste, providing more than 17.7 million meals to those in need. Anyone in need of food assistance can receive food from the Great Plains Food Bank and Mobile Food Pantry at no cost.
What can we do to help the communities and help people who cant work because of COVID? Or maybe theyre not in school because of COVID. And this is one way that we can give back and offer help to our communities, said Danne Doering, West Fargo Retail Location Manager.

Great Plains distributed about 13.4 million pounds of food during its most recent fiscal year, from July 2021 to June 2022. The nonprofit has budgeted $2.2 million this fiscal year to buy food to offset the drop in donations. Great Plains Mobile Food Pantry Coming To Williston
The Great Plains Food Bank Mobile Food Pantry will be in Williston from 4:30 to 6 p.m. June 22 at the Williston High School parking lot, south side, located at 4200 St. W.
Heres what you need to know:
Anyone in need of food assistance from any community is welcome to attend!
There will be a short intake form that must be filled out at the beginning of event.
If you are not fully vaccinated please wear a mask while interacting with volunteers.

Great Plains Food Bank Providing Mobile Virtual Food Pantry Options Amid Pandemic
The food bank has made some adjustments to continue feeding those in need
FARGO, N.D. The Great Plains Food Bank has had one mission for over 35 years: to end hunger in North Dakota and western Minnesota.
But with COVID-19 causing work layoffs and school shutdowns, more people in our region are going hungry everyday.
In one small town, we normally serve 50 or 60 households, and last week, we had 105 show up, says Great Plains Food Bank President Melissa Sobolik.
Although its services are essential, the food bank is faced with a unique challenge amid the coronavirus pandemic.
We still have a huge need for volunteers to be packing up food, and how do you get volunteers to come in and keep them 6 feet apart?
Theyve been doing so by spreading volunteers out across multiple spaces in the banks warehouse.
But those in the community dont have to leave their homes to help out.
If youre quarantined at home with your kids, you can sign up on our website to do a virtual food drive and send it out via Facebook and all of your friends, says Sobolik.
Participants can select products to sponsor with the click of a button.
For every dollar donated, the food bank provides three meals for those in need.
Theres a lot out there who never expected to be in this situation and are really calling and saying, Okay, now what do I do? And Im glad that we can be there to respond to all of that.

On August 28th, Heat Transfer Warehouse, Fargo volunteered at the Great Plains Food Bank for the third time. The team helped by shucking corn for an evening, getting the produce into a netted bag, and sealing them up in containers for distribution. The exact number of corn shucked is unknown, but according to Marketing Assistant Brendon Ranagan, 18 HTW members and the two hours of nonstop shucking made an impact.
The food banks mission is to end hunger through community partnerships and to one day have a hunger-free North Dakota and western Minnesota. GPFB has a warehouse where they store food items and supplies. They also have a backpack program, which offers hunger relief to kids who may not have immediate access to it at home.
Kevin Ingeman, warehouse branch manager, participated in this initiative and reflects on his contribution. He says, I love giving back to the community, and this is a great way to actually feel like you are making a difference. I learned just how large of an operation a food bank can be.
Also commenting on this experience is Jamison Gehrig, operation manager, who says, With connection being one of our core values at Heat Transfer Warehouse, it is always great to give back. Its something I always look forward to each time.

High Plains Food Bank Needs Volunteers Going Into New Year
The High Plains Food Bank is in need of volunteer help going into the New Year.
Due to the pandemic, the HPFB, like many other nonprofit organizations, has seen a decrease in volunteers.
Our biggest need going into the new year is volunteer groups that could setup a reoccurring schedule and volunteer with us, said Zivorad Filipovic, director of marketing and communications for HPFB. We are really in need of this right now so that we can sort through our donated product and get it out to those who need it in our communities. This has been the one consistent need through all of this.”
The food bank serves individuals in over 29 counties, providing food agencies and food pantries with the supplies to help the community combat hunger.

Although the HPFB saw a rise in volunteers over the holidays, the need for helping hands is still there.
We saw a great involvement and uptick in 2021 over the holidays but we are still needing groups and individuals to keep up that enthusiasm and consider volunteering on a regular basis, said Zack Wilson, Executive Director for the High Plains Food Bank
It’s extremely needed right now to provide for the increase in food needs here as well as the increase in food donations received,
According to Wilson, in previous years before the pandemic the food bank averaged 100 to 200 volunteers a week but has since seen the number of volunteers cut in half.

Great Plains Food Bank works with different businesses and the public to take in excess food and get it to different food pantries and programs to ensure its distributed to those in need.
There are other ways to help. You hear it often, volunteer. Jared explained that they can accommodate many types of groups who volunteer at their Fargo warehouse. Whereas some places cant work with a 3-year-old volunteer, the food bank can take very young volunteers and the kids can do great work. Finally, monetary donations will always be helpful to nonprofit organizations like the Great Plains Food Bank.

FARGO, ND Hope is found in interesting places. For a local food bank, one of those places was a semi trailer donated by Gate City Bank.
Every year, one in nine North Dakotans seeks emergency food assistance. Gate City Bank believes that no one should have to suffer from hunger, which is why the Bank surprised Great Plains Food Bank with a brand-new delivery truck in 2016, made possible with a $250,000 pledge over 10 years.
Gate City Bank exists to create a better way of life for our communities, especially individuals who dont have access to the food they need to thrive, says Kevin Hanson, President & CEO. Ending hunger is everyones shared responsibility, and it continues to be an honor to support the wonderful mission of Great Plains Food Bank through this unique partnership.
Gate City Bank donated the semi trailer as part of Great Plains Food Banks Feed the Future initiative. Each year, the truck travels 60,000 miles, transporting 12.5 million meals and impacting nearly 100,000 residents throughout the region, half of whom are children and senior citizens. Along with non-perishable food items, it hauls fresh produce and hygiene products.

Tips For Donating To The Great Plains Food Bank
Its always a good time to give back to the community, but with Giving Hearts Day around the corner some might be more driven to do what they can. We talked to Great Plains Food Bank, North Dakotas only food bank, to see what donation items may be needed in our communities.
Jared Slinde, communications manager at Great Plains Food Bank, explained that over time the food bank has shifted its model from giving the communities food, to giving the communities nutritional and healthy food.
