HAMPDEN, Maine The Good Shepherd Food Bank will be officially opening it’s new distribution Center in Hampden on Thursday.

The food bank has been renovating a former newspaper processing facility to create a facility capable of providing meals to all food-insecure Mainers by 2025.

This $5 million dollar project will allow for better statewide service to food insecure families and food pantries. It will accompany a similar Good Shepherd facility in Auburn.

The new facility is home to three state-of-the-art temperature and humidity controlled cold storage units that will allow for year-round distribution of fresh food and expanding the Food Banks capacity to use more fresh produce. Much of that produce will be locally grown and purchased from Maine farmers.

“We’re so excited to be here today, this really is a significant milestone in the food bank’s history,” said Good Shepherd Food Bank President Kristin Miale. “To be able to have such a larger presence in the greater in the greater Bangor community so that we can be better, stronger partners for central, northern, and downeast Maine.”

The cold storage unit also includes freezer space made to store lightly processed local produce and seafood, as well as meat, dairy, and other perishable products.

Good Shepard Food Bank Receives Donation To End Hunger

With the growing need to distribute food in the central and northern parts of Maine, Good Shepherd Food Bank began a capital campaign to fund a distribution center in Hampden, Maine. As part of the Ending Hunger Campaign and efforts of the Maine credit unions, Brewer FCU pledged a total of $5,000 to Good Shepherd Food Bank. $1,000 each year for five years. We are pleased to be supporting the efforts of Good Shepherd Food Bank to work to provide food to Mainers, says Dave DeFroscia, President and CEO of Brewer FCU.

Good Shepherd Food Bank provides free summer meals for children in the Bangor area

Oakhurst Donates $1 Million In Funds And Food To Good Shepherd Food Bank

With Maine experiencing a higher rate of food insecurity than most of the United States and an estimated 182,000 Maine residents experiencing hunger, Oakhurst Dairy has pledged to donate $200,000 in funds and $479,000 in food donations over the next four years to Good Shepherd Food Bank of Maines Campaign to End Hunger. This is in addition to funds and food donations made by Oakhurst to the organization over the last two years totaling almost $420,000 $50,000 for the Food Banks Hampden facility renovation, $10,000 in emergency pandemic relief funds and $359,000 in food. Combined, these donations will total a little over $1 million by the end of 2025.

The states largest hunger-relief organization has set a goal to raise $250 million $150 million in large scale food donations from food retailers, manufacturers, producers, and Maine farmers, as well as $100 million in philanthropic donations from individuals, businesses, and foundations by 2025.

What is the Food Mobile?

The Food Mobile program uses a refrigerated truck to deliver perishable and non-perishable food to a community in need. We work with partner agencies and other groups to deliver this service to communities based on need and available grant funding. The Food Mobile program is funded through grants that are received by Good Shepherd Food Bank. Often times funding is specific to certain communities or counties of the state. The Food Bank will prioritize unrestricted Food Mobile grant funds to those areas most experiencing food insecurity due to high unemployment, natural or other disaster, or lack of other resources.

Volunteer Good Shepherd Food Bank is committed to the belief that involving volunteers in its operations is a necessity for carrying out its mission of providing increased access to food for those at risk of hunger in the state of Maine. Volunteers may be doing a variety of different projects based on the present need in the distribution centers. Examples of what volunteers may be doing include: helping pack our supplemental nutrition program and assisting the inspection team to pre-inspect donated, salvaged food and sorting it for storage or order processing.

Good Shepherd Food Bank

Good Shepherd Food Bank is the largest hunger relief organization in Maine, providing surplus and purchased food to more than 400 non-profit organizations throughout the state. In 2015, the Food Bank distributed 23 million pounds of food to its partner agencies.

The Food Bank’s primary warehouse is located in Auburn, Maine. It operates another distribution center in Hampden, Maine. The Food-Bank is a member of Feeding America (formerly America’s Second Harvest, the nation’s largest charitable hunger-relief organization, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois.

Expanding The Reach Of The Good Shepherd

In the past, the distance was a major obstacle for agencies located several hours away from the Food Bank’s headquarters in Auburn many felt they were not able to access adequate quantities of food. The organization addressed this problem, as well as its responsibility to serve the entire state of Maine, by establishing a distribution center in Brewer. This facility has since closed however, a new distribution center in Hampden replaced it. The facility in Hampden now serves hundreds of agencies in seven counties in Northern and Downeast Maine.

Good Shepherd Food Bank To Dedicate New Hampden Distribution Center

Good Shepherd Food Bank, Maine’s largest hunger-relief organization, tomorrow will celebrate the opening of its new Hampden food distribution center and the completion of a $5 million capital campaign.

The organization will hold a dedication ceremony Thursday, at 11 a.m., at 11 Penobscot Meadow Drive, Hampden.

The event will begin with remarks by Mike Vail, president of Hannaford Supermarkets, followed by a ribbon-cutting with Good Shepherd representatives and local officials. Self-guided tours will then be offered.

Good Shepherd said in a news release that the 40,000-square-foot warehouse was established to help the bank distribute more food more frequently and more efficiently. Food will be distributed through northern and central Maine, as well Downeast.

While many other states are seeing hunger decline, Maine continues to see a high rate of food insecurity, ranking No. 12 nationally, according to new U.S. Department of Agriculture data.

The food bank already distributes more than 25 million meals annually from its Auburn distribution center. Good Shepherd said the new Hampden facility provides capacity to distribute an additional 10 million meals a year, and is fundamental to meeting the organization’s goal of eliminating food insecurity in Maine by 2025.

In July, tech entrepreneur Frederick Fritz Onion and his wife Susan Onion, of Wayne, pledged a $500,000 matching gift to help Good Shepherd Food Bank create the new branch.

Good Shepherd Food Bank Partners With Local Company Adds Solar Panels To Facilities

Good Shepherd Food Bank, with the help of ReVision energy, is using solar panels to increase operating efficiency.

HAMPDEN, Maine – Good Shepherd Food Bank of Maine works with more than 500 agencies to distribute healthy, nutritious meals to those struggling with hunger.

With the help of ReVision energy, they will continue that effort, using solar panels to increase operating efficiency.

Studies show that climate change disproportionately affects low income individuals, so this actually does align very well with our mission, said Melissa Huston, Major Gift Officer for Good Shepherd Food Bank.

The project, started last May in Auburn, finished up in Hampden in July.

In total, theres over 17,000 fully operational solar panels in place at Good Shepherd Food Banks Auburn facility, and at their Hampden distribution center.

A big motivator of the project that we completed here in Hampden was to allow for an expansion of our cold storage capacity, added Huston.

The panels were donated by community solar investors Fritz and Susan Onion.

Good Shepherd Food Bank will be able to purchase the electricity generated by the solar panels at a below-market rate, while reducing emissions from regional fossil fuel plants.

Their support was able to pay for the panels up front, that allows us to realize the savings immediately, and we do have the ability to purchase the panels at a reduced cost in a few years, said Huston.
