One in five children in our area struggle to get enough to eat. ” said Amy Breitmann, executive director at the food bank. Many families are having to make difficult choices to put food on the table, which means that nutrition often takes a back seat to hunger.

Golden Harvest is also addressing child food insecurity in its 25 county service area by partnering with local schools to provide nutritious food to children in need through their BackPack and School Market programs.

The BackPack program provides elementary, middle and high school students in need with a bag full of healthy food and snacks when school is out on Friday so that they have something to eat over the weekend.

The School Market program serves K-12 students in need and their families through food pantries operating in their schools.

The food bank has served nearly 400,000 families and provided more than 62,000 meal packs for children across its service area since the start of the pandemic.

Lets Scare Away Hunger

Hunger is scary for families, seniors, and children in need in our community. For 30 years, neighborhoods, businesses, organizations and volunteers have linked arms with Golden Harvest Food Bank to scare away hunger through the Its Spooky to Be Hungry® Drive. Last year, friends like you raised enough funds for more than 600,000 meals, making an incredible difference when the need was greater than ever before. Our goal this year is to raise 750,000 meals for neighbors in need!

What started as a neighborhood food donation drive has evolved into a virtual drive that includes hundreds of businesses, schools, community groups, and churches across the CSRA all united by a common cause to fill plates and hearts in our community. Our virtual platform empowers you to leverage our buying power so that every $1 you raise places 3 nutritious meals on the tables of our neighbors in need.

Bigger Warehouse To Come

Golden Harvest hopes to begin its second building phase in autumn, when the food bank plans to demolish its current 15,000-square-foot produce warehouse and rebuild one twice as big.

The idea, Breitmann said, is to develop a facility with the capacity to allow volunteers to deftly handle food deliveries and increase the food banks number of turns, which describes how quickly food arrives and leaves.

Its really not about the desire to build more and more warehouse space, because our work is not to store food, she said. Our work is to distribute it.

The new warehouse will accommodate larger amounts of produce that volunteers sort into smaller packaging and organize into cooler and freezer space to await delivery to Golden Harvests 25 counties.

“There are just a lot of ways were addressing the problems that weve had, and we know this will help us move more and more efficiently, Breitmann said.

They also say they received a $52,000 grant that will help them with mobile food distributions.

MORE | Work begins on Bettys Branch at Riverside Park

She says a lot of people are in need.

With inflation the way it is, with gas prices and food increases, so many people are struggling to get especially fresh protein and fresh produce, she said.

She says getting that fresh food to rural communities is the biggest challenge.

Its really incredibly important that we have these refrigerated vehicles that can transport that fresh meat and dairy, eggs, protein, and fresh vegetables out to those communities safely, she said.

Golden Harvest is getting a new refrigerated truck. Darden Restaurants and Penske worked together to get this for the food bank.

Golden Harvest also received more than $50,000.

It means a lot for those two organizations to come together, collaborate, provide the truck and also provide the $52,000 to stock this truck and get it out to the community, said Breitmann.

She says the truck is ready to be used now. A CDL is not required to drive it.

In 7 People Face ‘food Insecurity’

An estimated one in seven people in the Golden Bank service area face food insecurity, described as a familys inconsistent access to healthy, affordable food. In Richmond County, that translates to roughly 30,000 residents.

Some counties burdens are heavier than others. Just 7.4% of affluent Columbia Countys population is classified as food insecure by Feeding America, the nonprofit network of U.S. food banks that includes Golden Harvest. Only three of Georgias 159 counties have a lower food-insecurity rate, according to Feeding America Forsyth, Fayette and Oconee counties, with rates of 6.2%, 6.5% and 6.8% respectively.

The highest rate in Golden Harvests coverage area is in Jenkins County, at 18.3%.

Higher demand for food translates to higher handling costs, Breitmann said. In Emanuel County, for example, Summertown Baptist Churchs food pantry jumped from serving about 400 families just a few months ago to 750 families currently.

And the trucks that carry the food run on diesel fuel, for which prices have shot up 66%, she said.

Were taking an entire tractor-trailer load, a 53-footer, out there every single month, Breitmann said.
