Food Insecurity In America

Feeding America estimates 42 million Americans are food insecure, and over 13 million children are currently living in food insecure households. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, food insecurity has drastically increased for over 10 million Americans. Unsurprisingly, children, minorities, and the elderly populations are disproportionately impacted. It is critical that our local food systems have a source of fresh and healthy foods available to distribute to our underserved populations.

Now, thinking back to this story, how can this mother and child make sure their nutritional needs are met? Well, they can go to hunger relief organizations to receive the food they need. And here is where you can come in! You can drop off food donations to your local hunger relief organizations. Those organizations will then redistribute these resources to food insecure families in your local community.

The main goal of hunger relief organizations is to provide a source of food to populations in need. Hunger relief organizations form partnerships with individual donors, community retailers, distributors, government agencies, and other organizations to distribute food to food insecure families. With that said, how does donating food help the community? Donating food is a great way to decrease food waste, reduce production of greenhouse gases, and strengthen your community through food.

We have compiled a list of resources below, so you can easily donate food near you.

    What Is Food Insecurity

Food insecurity is characterized by lacking the necessary financial resources to access nutritious food essential for health. We wrote this blog post to help answer the question of where can I drop off food donations near me?

Imagine this, you just received your check for this month: $2,000 dollars. You can’t qualify for any government assistance because you make a few hundred above the maximum income threshold.

With this check, you pay rent , insurance , and utilities . Now, with $496 dollars, for you and your child, you will also need to buy incidentals: medicine, hygiene products, and more. With the average cost of food for two being around $500, you will have far less than that to buy adequate food.

Food insecure households often experience multiple financial burdens that negatively impact their ability to buy nutritional foods. Extreme food insecurity can result in hunger.

Best Practices For Donating Canned Foods

Thanksgiving food drive: Mayflower Marathon donation event kicks off in Hampton Roads

We all want to be good citizens and do some good with the items were donating. Here are some guidelines to follow:

    • Donate the items that the food bank accepts. Read their guidelines first.
    • Check expiration dates. If an item is nearing or past expiration, the food bank likely wont accept it.
    • Examine packaging for rust, dents, faded or damaged labels, or leaks.
    • Check foodbank hours to ensure that you dont make a wasted trip. Remember, Easy Donation PickUp will come to you, so you dont have to worry about that if you donate your canned food to us!
    • Avoid donating perishable items. It might seem common sense, but its easy to forget that an item requiring refrigeration will not hold up on a foodbank shelf. This includes anything that needs to be refrigerated.

Dont worry, though. Just because you cant donate fresh food doesnt mean that hungry families dont have access to these items through a food bank. Food banks often coordinate with suppliers such as farmers, restaurants, and retailers to source these items.

    Food Donations From Individuals

While we appreciate the support we received from food drives over the years, weve had issues with the varying levels of food quality through third-party food drives. On average, up to 30% of the food we receive ends up being SPOILED, DAMAGED, or UNSAFE to eat.

After much consideration, we have decided to move away from food drives as of January 2022.

For more information on this decision, please visit our page here

If you already hosted your food drive and need to drop off your food, you may drop it off at one of our Community Agency Partners.

How Can You Help Aside From Donating Food And Money

Limiting your support of the food bank to monetary or food donations is unnecessary. Helping to organize and distribute gifts is one way to volunteer. Still, there are many other ways to bring attention to the issue of hunger in your town, such as attending community events or talking to your loved ones about the subject. You can help end hunger and food insecurity by lobbying for legislation that will do just that. Have faith that your efforts will help those who need it.

A fantastic way to assist people in need in your neighborhood is to volunteer at a food bank and help sort and distribute the food that has been donated. You may be certain that your efforts will positively impact people who benefit from your efforts. You can help people in need no matter where you choose to drop off your food bank contributions.
