Tiny Greeter Huge Welcome
Every time the front door opened at a rural nutrition center in Guatemala that I was visiting with our team, 4-year-old Dervy marched right up to each visitor. I watched as he smiled broadly, spread his little arms in a sweeping motion across the entryway and then gleefully shouted, ¡Bienvenido!, the Spanish word for welcome.

Selecting A Charity To Donate
Usually, we select a charity that supports a worthy cause of our interest. It could be anything from helping seniors lead a better life or feeding malnourished children in a faraway country. Some of us also donate to charities that support animal welfare or provide medical services to the underprivileged.
Therefore, selecting a charity to donate to usually depends upon what causes we support.
We arent billionaires to simultaneously donate big money to several charities. And this can pose a significant dilemma: we wish to help seniors, protect animals, educate underprivileged children while helping the poor access healthcare.
If you face such hurdles in deciding upon a charity to donate to, heres a simple idea that I personally use. Decide on the amount of money you wish to donate. Finalize one of two charities and split the money equally to donate.
Some charities also accept used clothes, household appliances, vehicles, and furniture donations. If you wish, its possible to give these away to a worthy charity too.

What To Donate To A Food Bank And What To Avoid
So, youre ready to donate food to your local food bank. Thats great! Whether youre starting a food drive or just planning to grab a few extra items for donation while out grocery shopping, there are a couple of things you should know about what you can donate and what food banks wont accept.
What food you CAN donate to your local food bank:
This part is pretty easy. Food banks accept dry and canned food donations. What does that mean? Basically, any food that is shelf-stable or nonperishable you can keep it in your pantry and it wont go bad. And remember, only donate food that hasnt reached its sell-by date yet. Specifically, food banks often need items like:
Thats definitely not an exhaustive list but it covers a lot of what food banks regularly need. Additionally, some food banks accept personal care and household items, since many families struggle to afford these items and they arent covered by other food assistance programs like SNAP.
If youre still stumped about what to donate, just look in your own pantry. Families struggling with hunger often cant afford the staples that we normally have stocked at home. So, check your pantry out and go from there. Even specialty foods like olive oil, dressings, or marinades can be helpful if they dont need to be refrigerated.

The Hunger Industry: Does Charity Put A Band
The pandemic has raised awareness of the US food insecurity crisis and highlighted the reliance on corporate food philanthropy
Alyson Graham raised three children by juggling multiple jobs and making tough choices about what they should go without. For more than 20 years, she made weekly visits to a food pantry, before going to the store to supplement the free groceries using food stamps and whatever money she had left after paying rent and bills.
It was a struggle to put nutritious food on the table.
âI always had two jobs when my kids were growing up, but still couldnât make ends meet,â said Graham, 51, who worked minimum-wage jobs in call centres, bars and restaurants in Houston. âI couldnât let the lights or water go off, and there were always other expenses like shoes and books, so I relied on food pantries and frozen food like chicken nuggets to fill them up. The system is so skewed, itâs almost impossible.â
Grahamâs story is a typical American story, and one that predates the unprecedented economic crisis caused by the pandemic.
Every month, millions of working folks are forced to choose between rent, bills, healthcare, childcare and food because they are not paid a living wage. According to one measure, 43.5% of Americans were living in poverty or low-income households in 2017, with the latter often just one emergency or missed paycheck away from falling below the poverty line.

Are Canned Food Donations Tax Deductible
The short answer is yes. However, there are some rules you must follow to write off the value of your canned food donation on your tax return. The first thing youll want to confirm is that the place youre donating to is a tax-exempt organization. The IRS has a list of organizations on its website, which you can access using the Exempt Organization Search Tool.
You should be aware that not all tax-exempt non-profits will appear on the list. For example, any non-profit that is already tax-exempt will have an application on file. This includes churches, mosques, synagogues, and government agencies.

World Hunger Charities Ending Global Starvation
One of the hottest debates in humanitarian activism is exactly what it would take to solve global starvation, and finally achieve a world where all children and their families have access to a prosperous and dignified life. The truth is, one single solution will not free the world from the systemic issues that drive poverty in the first place, such as poor education, low food security, inaccessible healthcare, gender inequality, and unstable local government directives.
Thats why the matrix of nonprofit organizations and charities, each tackling different problems to drive powerful change all over the world, are creating real and sustainable impacts together. World hunger relief charities could be any global humanitarian organization that provides nutritious food to poverty-stricken areas or those that address the root causes of poverty. The shared objective of these organizations is to help these regions escape and end food insecurity.
