Can I Bring A Group
Yes, groups are welcome to volunteer with us. Our volunteer projects can accommodate groups of various sizes and are perfect team-building opportunities. Groups of 20 or more volunteers are asked to contact the Food Bank directly at 630.443.6910 or volunteer@northernilfoodbank.org to register. To ensure we are able to accommodate your group size, we recommend groups contact our volunteer team at least one month in advance of their proposed group outing.
Do I Need To Bring Anything To The Pop
No, our Pop-Up Markets are designed to make it safe and easy for our neighbors to receive food during this time. Just come to the pop-up in a vehicle, with some space for our staff to place the pre-packed boxes and bags of groceries. You do not need to bring your own boxes or bags, as the groceries will be already packed in bags and boxes for you.
You also do not have to bring any form of ID or documentation to prove your households need.

Volunteer Opportunities At Northern Illinois Food Bank
We simply could not do what we do without the help of volunteers! Whether you can volunteer at our food bank once a week, once a month or once a year individually or with a group of friends, family or colleagues, whatever your commitment, every hour of assistance helps us ensure all our neighbors will have access to food in order to thrive.
Thanks to our volunteers, Northern Illinois Food Bank serves more than half a million neighbors each year across 13 counties. Last year, food bank and food pantry volunteers donated 130,000 hours of their time to help distribute 78 million meals to families, seniors, and kids facing hunger in our community. What you do matters!

Winnebago County Free Food Pantries
Find how to get free food, groceries, meals, and even personal hygiene items in Winnebago County Illinois. If you and your family need help, in particular free food or hot meals, do not hesitate to contact a pantry in the Winnebago County region that may be near you. Several non-profit organization, churches, and charities will help lower income and struggling clients get the items that they need to feed their families. Some of the primary free food banks, soup kitchens, and emergency pantries in the region to call are below as well as general information on their services. Most of the pantries rely on donations and contributions from people and businesses in the community, so the amount of assistance they can provide will vary.
However many of the Winnebago County Illinois locations will have boxes of canned goods, some fresh perishable items, fruits, and sometimes more specialty type items such as baby formula or Christmas or Thanksgiving meal assistance. Do I Have To Be Eligible For Snap To Receive Food
You do not need to be receiving other assistance to visit our Pop-Up Markets. SNAP is an entitlement program based on your income eligibility that is not capped at a particular number of participants. While SNAP is based on income, it often only covers the first two weeks of a familys food needs. We encourage our neighbors in need to utilize SNAP and other community resources to ensure their needs are met. If you need assistance in applying for SNAP, please reachout to our SNAP Team. Hold Your Meeting At Northern Illinois Food Bank
Need to hold an off-site meeting? Looking for a teambuilding exercise that is both fun and rewarding? Northern Illinois Food Bank can help! The Food Banks West Suburban Center in Geneva offers meeting spaces equipped with audio/visual technology. Rooms are available to accommodate groups from three to 300 people. The Northwest Center in Rockford offers a meeting space to accommodate groups up to 60 people.
Our meeting spaces offer flexibility with seating configurations to meet your needs. Weve provided below photos and capacity information for each room. For companies looking to engage your employees in an exercise in working together, the Food Bank setting allows you to turn your meeting into a teambuilding experience. Group volunteer sessions allow team members to build camaraderie by working together to sort, label and repack food donations for distribution to the 900 partner feeding programs in the Food Bank network.

The Salvation Army Helps Cure Hunger In Our Community Through:
The Salvation Army’s food pantry at our Social Service Center serves the Rockford/Winnebago County area. Items provided include shelf-stable pantry foods, breads, cereals, meat, and other household necessities. For more information, visit our Social Services page or call 815.972.1135.
The Salvation Army Friday Night Patrol provides food and hygiene products to those who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless in our community. Do I Need To Come Early And Get In Line
No, you do not need to come early to get in line. In fact, you will wait less and still get the same amount of food if you come an hour into the distribution. If you arrive before the market opens, the first 75 households in line must participate in a lottery for a number and are not guaranteed early entrance into the market. We cannot let you in the building early for any reason, including to use the bathroom.

Can I Get Food For A Family Member Neighbor Or Friend Who Cant Get There
Yes. We know that there are many of our neighbors unable to go out in public at this time for a variety of reasons. If you are picking up for another family, please let our volunteers know how many households you are there to pick up for during the intake process

No. Neighbors attending will arrive in their vehicles and remain inside during the entire distribution. Staff and volunteers wearing gloves and masks will engage with neighbors through car windows, direct them through the distribution line, and place the groceries inside vehicle trunks or backseats ensuring social distancing and the safety of all attending.

Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.
What Is A Food Pantry
Often used interchangeably, a food bank is not the same organization as a food pantry. Food banks like Northern Illinois Food Bank build a food supply by taking donations from food drives and partner organizations. As supplies are collected, theyre inventoried and distributed to organizations that provide food directly to families in need, like pop-up food pantries, homeless shelters, and soup kitchens.

Skyrocketing Food Costs Drive Hundreds To Rockford Food Pantry
ROCKFORD, Ill. Prices of groceries are up 8% compared to this time last year, prompting the Voices of Inspiration and the Northern Illinois Food Bank to offer free necessities to Rockfords needy residents.
What are your options? To cut back and eat ramen every day? Or come here and receive something that is nutritious? asked resident Dawn Johnson, who thanked dozens of volunteers who were loading up cars with grocery bags on Thursday.
With gas prices and food prices, people cant make it from paycheck to paycheck anymore, she said.
Johnson is one of the hundreds who picked up fresh food today.
Some people come up with tears in their eyes and leave with a smile, said Voices of Inspiration founder and CEO, Vivian Lott. Thats the most important thing.
Voices of Inspiration describes itself as a food pantry made up of neighbors helping neighbors, and it is located at 3112 N. Rockton Avenue, open 12:30 p.m. 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, and Fridays.
Freddy Cruz said he used to donate canned foods to the pantry and has now found himself on the receiving line.
I went to the grocery store myselfand the meat is I left it. I didnt even buy it, because it was too high, he said.
Meat prices are up 20%, while fish, eggs, milk, chicken, and bacon have all seen double-digit price hikes, causing some to skip the fresh food and resort only to frozen and canned goods.
Is There A Dress Code
Yes, we recommend dressing comfortably and in layers depending on the season of year. Additionally, volunteers working in our warehouse must WEAR CLOSED-TOE SHOES on the day of your shift. Individuals wearing open-toed shoes such as sandals, flip flops, soccer slides, Crocs, Keens, slippers etc. will not be allowed to work in the warehouse under any circumstances. Also, high heeled shoes are not appropriate in a warehouse setting. Long shorts or pants and t-shirts or sweatshirts are recommended.

When people in Winnebago County arent sure where their next meal will come from, they can turn to food pantries and other consumer-facing organizations for peace of mind. Many of these organizations are non-referral, such as My Panty Express. But youre not limited to food items onlyyoure welcome to items such as apparel, toiletries, baby products, and more. All you have to do is walk in, use the drive-thru, or use a mobile method to order free food.

How First Free Can Help
There are two ways our church family can help. One is to donate. Pantries receive larger food donations from stories and producers, but individuals or churches can donate food, too. An even better help is when people donate money, because it helps NIFB bulk food buyers offset the impact of inflation and keep shelves stocked. .
The second big need is volunteers, especially during community shopping times on Thursdays and Fridays from 1 to 7 p.m. Even when NIFB has enough food on those days, they dont have enough volunteers to keep shelves stocked. So people panic and think we are out of food, Courtney said, but really its just that we cant get it out fast enough.
Other volunteer exist every week, including Saturdays. This is a great chance for life groups, adult communities, youth groups or individuals to minister to our community.
Having a group that could make a commitment to, say, once a month would be amazing, Courtney said.
First Free Rockfords Jeremiah Fund focuses on engaging our congregation to seek the welfare of the city of Rockford. Nominations are encouraged, and grants are distributed through members of our church who actively serve local non-profit organizations. .
Are Volunteers Required To Stay For The Entire Shift
Yes. Our projects are designed for specific time periods so we ask that volunteers commit to the entire shift. For that reason, it is also important you arrive on time. If you are going to be later than 30 minutes or something comes up and need to leave early, our Volunteer Coordinators would be happy to assist you in rescheduling your volunteer shift

Are There Any Physical Requirements
The majority of our volunteer opportunities are sorting, inspecting and repacking food for our hungry neighbors.
