Why I Give Monthly
While Teaching Her Children, Aviva Learned Something ImportantWhen Aviva Wassermans children were small, she brought them to Second Harvest for family volunteer nights. She wanted her kids to see how fortunate they were and to understand that not everyone is so lucky.
It turned out the message I wanted THEM to get had a large impact on ME! she says. There are so many things that should be a right and not a privilege, food security among them.
Aviva, who lives in Nashville, sometimes feels overwhelmed by the enormity of community needs. But she knows at Second Harvest where $1 helps provide four meals even small acts can make a big difference. Thats why shes been a monthly donor for the past seven years.

The Nashville Food Project
The Nashville Food Project works with at least 30 partner organizations to provide made-from-scratch community meals to 3,000 to 5,000 people each week.
The organization also produces more than 25,000 servings of organic fruits and vegetables annually at its community gardens for its meal programs.
During the winter, The Nashville Food Project transitions to food and pantry drives to provide the bulk of the food for their community meals, many of which go to the YMCA, after-school programs for Metro Nashville Public Schools and other local nonprofits.
“We really, really depend on food drives because a lot of our donations come from farms, and during the winter they just stop producing,” David Frease of The Nashville Food Project said. “I think a lot of people might not necessarily think of the pantry or canned goods as helpful or as nutritious as fresh produce, but they are invaluable when the fresh stuff stops coming in.”
The Nashville Food Project’s greatest food donation needs are:
- Fresh or frozen protein, including ground beef, chicken breasts , breakfast sausage
- Fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Nuts and seeds of any kind
- Healthy snacks and granola bars
Donations can be taken to 5904 California Ave., Nashville, TN 37209, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Individuals can also organize their own food drives for The Nashville Food Project.

What Is The Difference Between A Food Bank And A Food Pantry
Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.
Why We Give Monthly
Family Motivated by Humble Beginnings, FaithWilliam Haynes was raised by a hardworking, single mother. They were poor, but no matter what, the first thing she did every payday was go grocery shopping.
Consequently, I have never known hunger, William said. If there is one thing I can do to honor my mothers memory and legacy, it is to make sure that I can help someone have food.
Davidson County residents William and his wife, Jacqueline, are enthusiastic Second Helpings monthly donors. Supporting Second Harvest was a family decision: Their humble beginnings, life experiences, and faith motivate them to feed hungry people.
I dont have much, but I can always find a few dollars to share so that at least one person can eat, he said. God blesses us to bless others.

Nashville Food Bank Sees Spike In Demand As Inflation Continues

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Inflation is leading to an uptick in the number of families a Nashville food bank serves.
Leaders at St. Lukes Community House in Nashville say their food bank is serving twice as many families than this time last year.
We served roughly 600 families last summer and this summer, it went up to 1,200, said Diamond Dortch, the programs assistant at St. Lukes Community House Food Bank.
Theyre wanting food, added Patricia Nesbitt, chief program officer at the food bank. Diapers is a big one, especially sizes four, five, and six. Thats something that we just cant keep in stock here and hygiene items basic household items like deodorant and cleaning supplies.
Those who help run the food bank at St. Lukes Community House say they can tell inflation has impacted many families.
We can get a truck on Monday and that delivery is gone by Tuesday or Wednesday, Dortch said.
Inflation is bringing even more people to their doors.
In January, we distributed about 199 food boxes and last month, that was closer to 600 and it served over 1,200 individuals, Nesbitt said.
The group said not only do these families need more food and household items, they need them more frequently.
To meet the increased needs, the food bank has added another day of service and are ordering larger from Second Harvest Food Bank.
Nesbitt said they partner with Second Harvest Food Bank for a lot of their supplies and food, but they are also accepting donations to help meet the need.
