Families in Sullivan County can get help feeding their family. Whether they are in a crisis, or struggling over the short term, a food pantry can often assist. The locations, which operate as non-profits, do their best to provide food, personal hygiene items, and more to struggling families. Some of the Sullivan County food banks even coordinate financial aid or benefits, such as WIC vouchers, for clients.

Not only may a pantry offer a wide array of services to the needy, but they also try to focus on certain groups of people as well. This means that if an individual has a certain diet , the pantries may offer baby formula or free Ensure. Kingsport City Schools Homeless Education Program And Family Resource Center

WRPC provides financial assistance for the purchase of food for students who have been identified as homeless by Kingsport City Schools. Donations help provide a Thanksgiving meal in November and a box of food while school is out of session during the Winter Break.

Each year in the fall, WRPC partners with WQCR-FM 88.3 and Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee to offer Thanksgiving meals to families in need. Financial support from WRPC purchases food that is added to school food drives, then boxed and delivered to students and their families for use over the Winter Break. This program was developed by Kingsport City Schools to help make sure students have food at home when school is out of session, as those students often receive much of their nutrition from meals served at school.

Inflation Low Donations Create Challenge For Second Harvest In Feeding Those In Need

KINGSPORT, Tenn. Inflation is impacting everyone, and Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee is no exception.

The food bank is not only working to help those struggling to feed their families as costs rise but trying to combat the rising prices themselves.

I think the one thing we want to say to our community is we need their support more than ever before, said executive director Rhonda Chafin.

This comes as federal programs through TEMA and USDA that helped supply Second Harvest with extra food during the pandemic have stopped.

All that support is gone now, said Chafin. Its time for us to really rely on our community.

The call for help comes amid the perfect storm. Not only has the federal assistance halted, but inflation is also rocking the nation. As such, Second Harvest has seen a lull in food donations.

We saw a big decline in food donations this year, said Chafin.

In recent months the demand for food assistance has climbed back up to where it was during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thanks to inflation, demand is high but supply is low.

People are faced with higher overall costs for fuel and food, and now we are seeing those numbers increase again at the levels of the pandemic.

Organize A Food Drive

Greater Kingsport YMCA and Second Harvest partner to create local feeding program for children

Food drives are another important source of food for the food bank. The top food drives last year include: NALC Letter Carriers Food Drive, the High School Student Food Drive, the ETSU Homecoming Food Drive, Scouting for Food, Junior League Food Drive, and more. Hold a food drive or donate to a food drive near you.

A great way to raise awareness and collect food for hungry people in your community is through a food drive. You can get everyone involved and help make a difference in the lives of your neighbors.

We would love to help you coordinate a successful event. If you would like to organize a food drive for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee, we can provide you with barrels for food collection and other collateral.
