The Face Of Hunger In Maryland
By several measures, Maryland is considered a great place to live, one you might not expect hunger to be so widespread. While U.S. News recently ranked it as the wealthiest state in the country, one in every three of us may suffer from food insecurity. Many Marylanders, including children, face very low food security a condition associated with progressive symptoms of starvation.
What Do Food Pantries Provide

Food pantries may limit how often you can get groceries and sometimes require a referral from the Department of Social Services.
Available food may vary from one food pantry to the next, but most food pantries provide staples like baby food, bread, canned goods, cereal, diapers, infant formula, pasta and vegetables.

What Can We Do
The Maryland Food Bank is working hard to ensure that the hundreds of thousands of food-insecure Marylanders have access to not only more food, but more nutritious food. We do this through a network of community partners that distribute the food that we purchase and receive from generous donors. Were working to educate the public about the true the nature of hunger, to help reduce the stigma food-insecure households face, and to make it easier to ask for help.
We are Marylands Food Bank, and you are Marylands Food Bank. Together, we can end hunger in our state.
What Is The Difference Between A Food Bank And A Food Pantry
Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.

How Is This Possible
With a cost of living higher than the national average, and wage growth stagnant while health care, child care, housing and other costs balloon, far too many Marylanders are forced to face tough choices on a regular basis: Rent or grocery shopping? Medicine or meals? Heat or eat?
The result is food insecurity, a way of looking at hunger that includes a more comprehensive view of the factors that influence the daily lives of Marylanders. The profile of food insecure households is evolving. Even though the economy is improving, the need for food assistance is shockingly stable, especially among children, seniors, and working families.

We had another huge turnout at our Community Grocery Giveaway on Sunday! from 2-4pm on Sunday, June 5th, the Trinity Center was bustling with guests doing a little complimentary grocery shopping.
Our Community Grocery Giveaway is a free food event to help provide grocery assistance to anyone in the community. With food prices rising and inflation taking its toll, many people are struggling to keep their pantries stocked and their families fed. Our Community Grocery Giveaway helped relieve some of the pressure for these families and individuals.
We provided a wide assortment of all sorts of non-perishable items like cereal, ramen, pasta, canned vegetables, boxed dinners, mac & cheese, beans, canned meat, and more.
We are so thankful to be able to help fight hunger in our community and make sure that no one is dealing with food insecurity. We noticed an increase in senior citizens who participated in the event due to rising prices vs their fixed income. These are definitely challenging times for many and were happy to be able to provide assistance.
There were so many grateful people at our Community Grocery Giveaway. Your donations have helped to make a huge impact on your community and not just in providing food but also providing hope and showing Gods love! Thank you for caring and sharing!
