National School Lunch Program

EPFH proudly obtained the Texas Department of Agricultures highly competitive contract to manage the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program . Through this program, EPFH services 185,000 low-income children across 182 schools in seven West Texas counties, including El Paso, Culberson, Hudspeth, Brewster, Jeff Davis, Reeves and Presidio Counties.

With the volume of food reaching schools in West Texas dropping an unprecedented 50% over the past two years, and child food insecurity on the rise, this partnership between EPHF and the Texas Department of Agriculture could not be more urgent.

Feeding Americas 2019 Map the Meal Gap indicates food insecurity nationally for children was 14.6 %. The seven West Texas counties included in the Free Breakfast Free Lunch Program have distressing rates of childhood food insecurity averaging 24.8%, with Culberson and Presidio Counties as high as 34.6% & 34.7% respectively more than double the national average pre-pandemic.

What Is A Food Bank

Food banks are non-profit charitable organizations that assist financially vulnerable populations by distributing food. Their main objectives is to help low-income individual and families by providing food.

They will work through other 501 non-profit organizations like food pantries and soup kitchens. Sometimes they distribute the food themselves via mobile pantry.

Food Bank in El Paso County, Texas serves as a single collection and distribution point for food donations. They operate much like a for-profit food distributor, but they do not use retailers. Instead, they may use church food banks, charities, and other non-profit food pantries to provide food to the people to fight hunger.

El Paso Texas As Inflation Continues To Rise Across The Country Foods Banks Seemed To Be Getting Hit Among The Hardest El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Have Seen This Problem Since The Beginning Of The Year And Despite Their Hopes The Food Supply Has Not Stabilized

The amount of food that food banks rely on has been at extremely low levels as of late, officials said.

Even though they informally do trade off with other food banks in the United States, since they are facing similar issues it has become increasingly harder to find the surplus food that they need and because of that, theyve had to face a new reality.

We are taking food product that we normally would not accept here at the food bank, just to ensure our people have something on their shelves and cupboards at home. This is not where the food bank wants to be, so were taking some extreme measures right now to get more nutritious food, said Susan Goodell, CEO for El Pasoans Fighting Hunger

The food bank normally has around a six-week supply of food, but due to the shortage they are now down to four days. With this shortag,e they now have to look beyond the Southwest region to find the items they need.

There is not a state in this country that were not touching with the exception of Alaska and Hawaii, so were in 48 states on a regular basis bringing back food to supply El Paso and our region, Goodell said.

As the number of individuals and families in need of necessities in the Borderland grows, the food bank is asking for donations from the community. If you would like to donate to El Pasoans Fighting Hunger you can find the information on their website.

Ner Insight: El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Gains Nearly 1200 Additional Caseloads With Link2feeds Nonprofit Management Software

Located in El Paso, TX, El Pasoans Fighting Hunger is the citys only food bank supporting over 132 partner agencies and 200,000 food-insecure people.

Prior to implementing Link2Feed, EPFH was using a paper-based process to fulfill their 3,188 CSFP caseload across a network of partner agencies. The COVID-19 pandemic caused many agencies to drop out of the program, leaving the food bank with a large number of boxes to fulfill on their own. Due to the complex nature of the paperwork, they were struggling to manage large distributions on-site and, therefore, unable to meet caseload. This was putting their CSFP program expansion at risk.

The reports in Link2Feeds nonprofit management software help the food bank understand exactly how many participants it has enrolled and provide a real-time breakdown of how close it is to achieving its monthly caseload. It can also use the demographic information to better understand what challenges clients are facing to refer them to other food bank programs.

Because of Link2Feeds nonprofit management software, EPFH went from being at risk of losing caseload that is vital for the seniors in its community, to being granted a caseload increase of nearly 1,200 boxes. The automated system has also significantly improved its compliance and access to information, giving it quick and clean audits with the Texas Department of Agriculture.

Scrambling to feed the hungry in El Paso

Without volunteers or funding to hire additional manpower to operate the location, officials say the closure was necessary.

We are heartbroken to be forced to make this difficult decision, but without adequate manpower in the form of volunteers, Texas National Guard and AmeriCorps, or funding to hire additional staff we cannot sustain all of our current food distributions. officials said Thursday.

The site, located at 5300 Doniphan, will be closed during the weeks of:

  • This week the Westside location is giving out extra food to its clients to help cover the gap.

Though the Doniphan location will be closed during these two weeks, the public can visit the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank site or Kelly Center for Hunger Relief, officials added.

Officials say the situation is also fueled by the fact that the need still continues. The food bank is still seeing an increase in the need for food assistance by those in our community who continue to struggle to get back on their feet and put food on their table.

We are seeing high need for food assistance and though we have some volunteers, we need volunteers and donations to support the level of need for emergency food distribution locations as well as building emergency food boxes for the homeless, elderly and other vulnerable populations, Susan Goodell, CEO El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank said.

The new schedule is as follows:

West Distribution site, 5300 Doniphan will have NO distributions the weeks of:

EL PASO, Texas With inflation impacting the entire country, food prices are sky rocketing everywhere including here in El Paso. The price hikes are bringing several challenges to El Pasoans Fighting Hunger food bank.

CEO of the food bank, Susan Goodell, said there has been a significant increase in the number of people in need.

Were seeing about a seven percent increase , she said. So what that means just here in this location alone, are seeing about 700 additional families a week.

Families are also making more frequent visits to their locations.

With food prices going up, Goodell said right now the biggest challenge for the food bank is keeping up with the food supply and having the financial resources to access that food. She said its been hard getting enough non perishable foods, fresh produce and fresh dairy.

The supply chain is frankly broken again and thats causing us real distress and finding adequate food, Goodell said. We want to make sure that the plate for our clients is balanced so that we have a variety of foods that provide the nutrition that they need to stay healthy and strong.

The cost of shipping to the food bank has also gone up drastically.

Thankfully, this hasnt impacted how much food theyre able to give, but if these problems continue, Goodell said it could.

The food bank is also in desperate need of volunteers.
