Local Food Banks Working To Meet Need With Record Inflation

COLORADO SPRINGS As prices on everything from rent to gas to groceries continue to rise, food banks and pantries work to meet the need while fighting inflation.

Care and Share Food Bank of Southern Colorado noticed the increasing costs the last few months.

“Getting food into our organization has become more difficult, and more costly,” said Lynne Telford, CEO of Care and Share Food Bank of Southern Colorado.

The organization is also struggling with the availability of food items.

“Availability is a huge issue for us. We are not able to get all of the products that we want and we are not able to get all of the quantities that we want,” said Telford.

They’re also dealing with high costs of transportation to their distribution center. They’ve recently paid $5.65 for a gallon of diesel fuel for their trucks, up 50 percent from last year.

“We cover 31 counties across Southern Colorado, about 50,000 square miles,” said Telford. “The biggest line item out of budget is freight. We have less food than we’ve budgeted, yet the cost is greater than we budgeted. Just because of paying the freight costs of all the donated loads.”

Care and Share is now dipping into their reserves to continue meeting the need of the community. Also, relying on partners and donors.

“We’re working hard, we’re working on adding another person to our procurement department so we can make sure we’re reaching out to all of the places where we can get help because people are relying on us,” said Telford.

Inflation has pushed food prices so high that King Soopers no longer sells $5 gift cards, Silver Key recently discovered, as the organization turned an eye toward the holidays.

Through its Bountiful Bags Thanksgiving food drive, seniors receive free staples for preparing a traditional holiday meal.

Woven bags are stuffed with donated cranberry sauce, dry dessert mix, dry stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, gravy mix and canned green beans, cream of mushroom soup and yams.

HOW TO HELP

Financial donations may be made at silverkey.org/donate.

A protein product is missing, to be purchased by the recipient with an included gift card.

For the first time, the card is redeemable for $10 worth of protein or a substitute food item instead of the usual $5, Wilson said.

That’s pushed the cost to fill each bag from $20 to $25, he said.

Our big fear is that if we dont receive enough food, well have to buy food in bulk to fill the bags, Wilson said, and this year its going to be tough.

To meet its goal of distributing 1,300 bags to needy seniors, Silver Key’s annual food drive began this week and runs through Oct. 31.

Holiday staples can be dropped off at:

Silver Key, 1605 S. Murray Blvd.

The Promenade Shops at Briargate, 1885 Briargate Parkway, suite 503, management office between Pottery Barn and Paper Source

Scheels, 1226 Interquest Parkway

Our on-site food pantry serves the working poor in our community by allowing their income to stretch a little further during times of financial crisis and ensuring that neighbors are never forced to choose between making a rent or mortgage payment and feeding their families. As with each of our service offerings, our pantry is a hand-up, not a handout. Neighbors can choose from a large selection of items that are set up in a grocery store environment. A volunteer accompanies them through the shopping experience helping them make decisions, along with demonstrating the love of Jesus.

The generous contributions of local businesses, churches, and individual donations keep our community Food Pantry supplied and ready to provide for neighbors in need.

Care And Share Food Bank Feels Inflation Pressure

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — As more families turn to food banks for help during rising inflation, Care and Share Food Bank in Colorado Springs admits it’s also struggling to keep up with costs.

“The challenges that you and I are facing whenever we go to the grocery store and are seeing the increase in cost of food, those are the same exact challenges that we’re facing here at Care and Share,” said Joanna Wise, Marketing and Communications Director at Care and Share Food Bank. “We purchase food on our own, and then we also pay for the cost of transportation for food that is donated to us across the country.”

According to the Consumer Price Index, food prices have risen 9.4 percent in the last 12 months ending in April.

“For the past several months, we have seen that the cost of food has been increasing for us,” said Wise. “An example would be a truckload of peanut butter. Peanut butter is a huge staple for the food bank and it’s one of our most popular items. A year ago, in 2021, we would spend around $37,000 for a truckload. This year, the very last order that we made, we spent $51,000.

And its not just the cost of food.

The price of gas has doubled for Care and Share in the last year and has gone up 85 percent since 2020.

To put it into perspective what that means within our budget and what we have to be able to spend, we travel nearly a quarter-million miles across 31 counties every single year, said Wise.

Silver Key usually obtains most of the food for its Thanksgiving giveaway from Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado, Wilson said, and supplements the bags with community donations. But supply chain problems have led to a dearth of the basics, he said.

This year Care and Share has been able to give us very few of the items, he said, so were very dependent on donations from the community.

Eating properly improves seniors lives and is particularly important during the holidays, Wilson said.

Its good nutrition for the body but also medicine to the soul when people can have the traditional meal and not Vienna sausages out of a can that day, he said.

The need for supplemental food for seniors households is great and growing, Wilson said, adding that the agency is seeing people who have never asked for assistance in the past.

Its like the perfect storm right now, Wilson said. If things dont turn around, Im concerned about what kind of collapse well see and what the safety net is going to be able to do.
