Food And Gas Costs Add To Pandemic Strain

Global supply chain shortages caused some food prices to increase in 2020, but food and gas costs have risen even more sharply since then, creating a multiplier effect for consumers. Because of that effect, most of the families Freestore Foodbank serves have spent their reserves just trying to maintain stable, said Kurt Reiber, president and CEO. About 75% of the families that come to Freestore’s large-scale food distributions have never been to one of their pantries.

The dramatic increase in prices has also been felt at food banks and pantries based in Kentucky. In March, about 65% of food banks saw greater demand for food than the previous month, Katrina Thompson, executive director of Feeding Kentucky, said.

The Brighton Center in Newport, Kentucky, has 47 different programs supporting those in the area, including a food pantry. Eric Owsley, director of the Family Center, said the pandemic caused a spike in need for all of the Brighton Center’s programs at the Family Center. That includes the food pantry, the emergency assistance program and financial assistance program, Owsley said.

Thompson also said the increased demand at food pantries coincides with the loss of some federal assistance, like emergency allotments for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. SNAP emergency allotments ended after April for Kentuckians, but continue for Ohioans as of June, according to USDA’s website.

OHIO

Freestore Foodbank – Mutliple locations in Cincinnati and one in Wilder, Ky.

• The Customer Connection Center has adjusted hours to accommodate for cleaning and restocking. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday, effective March 19.

• Liberty Street Market has moved to a prepackaged model of food distribution and will distribute in the front bay area of the market.

• With a few exceptions, the Freestore Food network of over 500 partner agencies remain open and programs operating, some in a modified form.

St. Vincent de Paul – Northern Kentucky

• The drive-thru food pantry in Erlanger will be open Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Falmouth food pantry will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. For Boone, Kenton and Campbell Counties, limited food delivery will begin the week of March 23 those who cannot leave their homes. St. Vincent de Paul will update when more details become available for this service.

Volunteer At A Soup Kitchen / Deliver Food:

Our Daily Bread is the citys largest soup kitchen. Located in Over the Rhine, they are in need of volunteers to help prepare the daily meals , food pickup and delivery, organizing canned food drives, and more.

St. Francis Seraph Ministries offers the urban poor in Over-the-Rhine an opportunity of dignity with a safe environment to have a hot meal served by compassionate volunteers. Meals are served Monday through Friday. Breakfasts at 7am-9am and dinners at 4-6pm. Volunteers are welcome year-round to help serve our guests during the breakfast and dinner times. They also need volunteers to assist with their Bag Lunch Program.

Meals on Wheels Meal Delivery program delivers meals to 3500 seniors every week throughout the Greater Cincinnati area. Volunteers are currently needed to help as meal drivers, pantry pickup, Birthday Box deliveries, and much more. Additional needs include delivering Thanksgiving meals to seniors, Thanksgiving pie packers, filling in for absent drivers, and more.

Queen City Kitchen has been serving meals for over 40 years. They have two kitchens one in Over the Rhine and The Walnut Hills Kitchen. A hot meal is served at the OTR location at noon on Tues/Thurs and Sat. / Sun. The Walnut Hills Kitchen serves a hot meal six times a week every day except Monday and Friday, twice on Saturday. They are always in need of volunteers to help at the kitchens and at the Walnut Hills Pantry.

Holiday Volunteers Needed Here

City Gospel Mission is hosting a Thanksgiving Exchange for families in need. The Thanksgiving Exchange is a grocery store where low-income families shop for their own Thanksgiving groceries at a very low price that they can afford. Volunteers are needed to help set up the store, sort items, stock shelves, assist customers, and much more. Minimum age for volunteers is 12.

Freestore Foodbank will work with the Cincinnati Reds Youth Academy for 2021 and host an outside food box distribution event. This will be a one-day event in November and also in December. Volunteers will provide operational support which will include customer check in, loading food and produce boxes into vehicles, and additional distribution support

Crossroads Church Thanksgiving Food Drive: In partnership with local churches, schools, civic organizations, and faith-based ministries, theyll be providing Thanksgiving meals to over 115,000 people in our communities. Theyll also be providing thousands of bulk food items to food pantries and partners in our cities. Be a part of the annual Thanksgiving Food Drive by signing up to serve during box distribution and collection.

Fall Feast is back for 2021 and theyre looking for volunteers. Fall Feast is an annual, volunteer-run event with the purpose of providing a fresh meal to the Cincinnati community.They need help in the kitchen, pre-event prep, kids zone, beverage and bussers, servers, host/hostess, and much more. Grab A Bite And Beverage At The Banks

New Community Authority Beginning April 1, 2019, portions of The Banks Riverfront Entertainment District established a “New Community Authority” as recognized by the City of Cincinnati and State of Ohio. Part of this districting process was the implementation of a 1% Banks Amenity Fee. The proceeds from the fee go back into the beautification of, events at, and marketing of The Banks district for the purposes of attracting more people to enjoy our Cincinnati riverfront. Higher Fuel Good Prices Hit Pantries

Food pantries and banks are feeling the same strain from food and gas prices as those they serve. Thompson said Feeding Kentucky started making sure any trucks going out for delivery returned carrying something, and the organization also tries to combine several stops on delivery runs to conserve fuel.

Despite price increases, food banks and pantries are still striving to provide individuals with healthy, fresh food. Reiber said that can be difficult, with the cost of some fruits and vegetables skyrocketing by 50%.

Similarly, Delaney said the Community Market tries to keep the “critical” items families often need like dairy, vegetables and meat on its shelves. How long that can continue for remains uncertain.

“The worry is sustainability. How long can we continue if prices continue to go up and donations continue to stay down?” Delaney said.

Thompson said Feeding Kentucky has also been trying to distribute its staples, including flour, rice and beans. But even those items have been subject to higher prices, Thompson said, and food banks are spending about 40% more on food.

Hamler-Fugitt said Ohioans are very charitable and gave a lot during the height of the pandemic. Food banks and pantries are encouraging individuals to keep donating and volunteering at facilities if they are able, especially as donations from retailers and manufacturers decline due to supply chain shortages.
