How Do Food Banks Help The Community

Second Harvest partners with local schools for summer food services

Food banks like Second Harvest Heartland support our hungry neighbors in numerous ways, wherever we believe food can be the solution to ending hunger. That includes efficiently and cost-effectively rescuing, purchasing and distributing large quantities of food to local food shelves creating innovative programs that reduce food insecurity and help end hunger for Minnesota and Wisconsin residents providing volunteer opportunities and advocating for policies and programs that make lasting change.

Why Are Food Banks Important

Food banks like Second Harvest Heartland play a critical role in the emergency food chain and hunger relief efforts. We operate as food wholesalers who source large quantities of healthy, nutritious food from retailers, manufacturers, distributors, farmers, producers and others, then repackage it into smaller quantities that community food shelves and our hungry neighbors can use. For example, our volunteers help turn a 2,000-pound bag of cereal into hundreds of family-sized boxes. By sourcing and distributing food efficiently, we amplify our reach and can help more people.

Making A Difference For Hungry Kids Families And Seniors

As one of the countrys largest food banks, we leverage our resources, expertise and connections to:

  • Make it easier for more hungry households and agency partners to use existing state and federal hunger relief programs like SNAP and CSFP/NAPS.
  • Explore how technology and innovation can streamline and improve the emergency food system, with powerful tools like MealConnect.
  • Respond to new and urgent demands in our community with thoughtful, custom solutions, such as Minnesota Central Kitchen during COVID-19 and FOODRx for individuals with chronic conditions.
  • Work with schools, educators and communities to address childhood hunger and help kids get the nutrition they need to thrive.

Our work exists to reduce the gaps in nutrition services and to more meaningfully and collaboratively strive to end hunger in the heartland.

What Is Hunger Relief

Hunger relief refers to organizations coming together to make no-cost food available to people who might need help keeping their fridges full. We believe that no one should go hungry or struggle with food insecurity, especially when there is more than enough food for all. As a food bank, we work with national, regional, and local organizations to get food to the individuals and families who need it.

How Does The Feeding America Network Of Food Banks Work

Feeding America is a nationwide network of 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs that provides food and services to people each year. Feeding America works to help bring healthy, nutritious food to regional food banks where they can direct it to community partners and hungry neighbors.

New Ways To End Hunger Together

We cant end hunger through food distribution alone. We also need programs and policies that work upstream to prevent emergency hunger and keep our neighbors fed and well.

We focus our programs and services in two areas:

  • Feeding the line of people experiencing hunger right now, through immediate distributions of healthy, fresh and nutritious food across nearly 1,000 agency partner programs.
  • Shortening the line of those affected by hunger, by helping address and prevent food insecurity earlier.
