Akron

Of course there is a need for weekend meals that is why we focus on these times, when the children are not receiving their free and reduced lunches. Our Backpack for Kids Program places security in these childrens hands through backpacks full of meals. We supply two nutritious breakfasts, two lunches, and two snacks, which are distributed by the school on Fridays. Each month, SCHTF serves packs to 2,200 children, making their weekend healthier and even a little brighter.

The Backpack for Kids Program not only helps these Stark County children come back to school on Monday better prepared to learn and concentrate it means they can focus on being a kid on the weekend, instead of wondering if and when they will be able eat. But we need your help to serve them.

You can help us make the lives of food-insecure children at 5 Stark County schools healthier and brighter, and you can do it easily. It only costs $10.00 to sponsor 1 child for 1 month! Supply Issues Impacting Stark Food Bank Shelves

Don Ackerman, a pastor for Crossroads United Methodist Church and executive director for Canton For All People, said in the past grocery stores donated much of their excess food. But due to shortages, they have less excess.

Mike Farmer, managing director for Canton For All People, estimates the amount of produce the Canton Free Store and Fresh Market receives from the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank is roughly half of what it was a year ago.

“It might be oranges this week. Next week is pears,” Farmer said. “There’s not a scarcity . …. But if all you want is apples, I can’t guarantee you’ll have apples today. Tomorrow, I might have apples.”

Ackerman said Crossroads has two locations in Canton, regularly serving more than 9,300 people.

Dan Flowers, CEO of the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank, said that while stores are cutting back on donations, the organization’s fundraising has remained robust so the food bank has sought to make up the shortfall by purchasing food. The food bank said it provides food to about 600 programs in eight Northeast Ohio counties.

“Our food purchase budget went up big time in 2021,” Flowers said. “It’s not a crisis. But we have these complications. We have less variety. We’re spending more to get food here. It’s taking longer to get here. … As long as the client demand stays the same right now, we can limp along. If the demand surges up, which I believe it could, with this inflation and gas prices, then we’re in a horrible spot.”

What Is The Difference Between A Food Bank And A Food Pantry

Akron

Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.
