Local Food Bank And Ymca To Hold Press Conference For Food Pantry Program

More local families will soon have better access to food.

Thursday morning a big announcement will be made between the Wilson Family Y and Golden Harvest food bank.

Cheryls Kitchen is a program thats been around for years. Now its expanding its initiatives for families in need.

One of those includes extending its hours that the pantry will be open so more families can get food later in to the evening.

Because a lot of food pantry around the area just close early and a lot of people, working family dont really get the opportunity to go to those food pantry because theyre closed said Priscilla Elliot, media and communications coordinator.

Another change is the pantry will now be open year round.

Thursdays press conference is at 10 a.m. at the Wilson Family YMCA.

Grant to help Golden Harvest Food Bank expand, offer more meals to families in need

During the event from 5:30-7:30 p.m., families can get fresh produce loaded into their vehicles.

Golden Harvest Food Bank and its more than 300 partner agencies have continued to provide fresh produce for community members throughout the year, and the produce distribution comes as rising costs of food are putting families in tough situations. Data from Feeding America shows 1 in 8 people in Golden Harvests 25-county service area are food-insecure.

Many families are having to make difficult decisions when it comes to paying their bills versus putting food on the table, said Golden Harvest Food Bank President and CEO Amy Breitmann. In addition to all the great produce that has been going out to our partners, we are proud to be doing these direct distributions during a time that is extremely challenging for families trying to make ends meet.

Volunteers will place fresh produce including items such as carrots, corn, potatoes and radishes in the trunks of incoming vehicles. Each car may receive enough produce to feed two families.

Please arrive in a vehicle with the trunk empty.

GFA classes are a fast track towards gaining the needed knowledge and experience to work in the film industry. GFA classes are available for traditional or nontraditional students, and welcome anyone considering a career change or second career.

Three Evans Scouts Earn Their Eagle Rank

EVANS, Ga. – On Monday, Will Symonds, Orion Kotas, and Nicolas Lopez had their Eagle Court of Honor, where they received recognition for earning Eagle Scout Rank.

The three Scouts are members of Troop 643 in Evans.

The Eagle Scout rank is the highest and most prestigious achievement in Scouting. To earn Eagle rank, Scouts must earn at least 21 merit badges, fulfill leadership roles, display outdoor skills, demonstrate by example the Scout Oath and Law, and complete a comprehensive service project in the community. Highly respected, the title of Eagle Scout carries with it special significance not only in Scouting but also in school, business, and the community.

Symonds has been a Scout since 2011 and earned a total of 32 merit badges. He completed his Eagle Scout project in December 2021. His project was a vermiculture storage shed and it took him over 153 hours to complete.

Kotas has been a Scout since 2010 and earned a total of 26 merit badges. He completed his Eagle Scout project in October 2021. His project was a Guatemala donation drive, and it took him over 20 hours to complete.

Lopez has been a Scout since 2010 and earned a total of 28 merit badges. He completed his Eagle Scout project in January 2022. His project was a dog house build and donation, and it took him over 97 hours to complete.

Helping Hands Food Pantry

Helping Hands is a faith-based 501 food pantry operated around Augusta, Georgia almost entirely by volunteers.

Families stopped by Mondays free food giveaway and filled empty boxes and shopping carts with milk, bread, meats, vegetables, and other household staples available for pick up.

Volunteers with the church say this is their way of helping the community.

Food Bank To Break Ground On Renovation Project In Augusta

The ceremony will take place at 8:30 a.m. at the Golden Harvest campus, 3310 Commerce Drive.

With interior demolition completed, these renovations will provide Golden Harvest Food Bank with a designated volunteer packing and sorting area, a new entrance, and increased office and conference room space.

In 2021, Golden Harvest Food Bank identified an 8.8 million meal gap across the 25-county service area and adopted a strategic plan to eliminate this gap by 2030. Renovations to the building will aid in these efforts.

Additional space and renovations will afford us more opportunities to transform the way we serve and provide for our community, Breitmann said.

The renovation is expected to be complete in summer of 2023, with Phase 2, the construction of a produce rescue facility, to begin this fall.

How Can You Help

Food Donations are accepted at either location during normal business hours. Donation bins will be placed at various locations around campus. There will be opportunities for donations for food drives and collection events throughout the year. Those will be advertised on this site as they become available.

Monetary donations can be made to the AU Foundation and can be specified for the Food Pantry.

How Do Drive

There are lot of volunteers help at Drive-thru food pantries. While not all drive-thru pantries operate in the same way, here�s how most work:
