Access to food has been really hard for people right now, said Lynn Pierce, executive director of SAFE. We want to get the donations distributed out fast because people need it. The food might be with us for one or two days, but then its right out the door back into the community.
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, local food pantries in Alamance County have been struggling to meet the food demands of local residents. Pierce has seen hundreds more families and individuals requesting food from SAFE than usual.
In the past, SAFE and the two other pantries benefiting from United Ways drive participated in the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. According to Pierce, the donations from that event could keep her pantry stocked for more than two months. But because of the pandemic the drive has been put off and an alternative date has not been announced.
To have that drive postponed has been devastating, Pierce said. This pandemic has thrown every pantry in the state into a whirlwind. But were so grateful to everyone from United Way and the community. Alamance has really stepped up since COVID, and I have full confidence that our pantries will get back up to capacity.

BURLINGTON The Spirit of Alamance Food Drive brought lines of cars, laden with canned produce and easy-to-cook food, down the streets of Burlington on Thursday.
Donations from the drive, sponsored by United Way of Alamance County, will go to the three food pantries most affected by COVID-19 The Salvation Army, DreamAlign and Southern Alamance Family Empowerment.
We knew these food pantries were struggling to meet the needs of all the people wanting food because of the pandemic. We wanted to be an active help to that problem, said Sally Gordon, community impact coordinator at United Way.
Nearly 130 cars came through during the seven-hour food drive, dropping off more than 3,200 items, primarily canned goods and other non-perishables.
Donations were picked up by the pantries on Friday and will be handed out to community members early next week.

Salvation Army Food Pantry
The Salvation Army is dedicated to eliminating food insecurity.

ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. The Salvation Army in Alamance County is need of donations after a sharp increase in the number of people needing food from its food pantry.
Since the summer, the food pantry has been serving about 220 families per week, double its normal amount.
Social Services Director Wendy Lewis says recent changes to the federal food stamp program has brought more people to their doors.
They have so many other things to worry about, she said. We just dont want them to have to worry about food. So for us, its really heartbreaking.
In July, federal guidelines were reinstated, requiring people who get food stamps to work, volunteer, or be in school for at least 20 hours a week.
Standards Lewis says some people just cant meet.
There are some people, transportation is an issue, child care is an issue, she said.
Lewis says theyve had to make cuts.
For example, a family of six or more usually gets at least two boxes of food but now, they are only given one.
Theres a higher increase of people needing food before the holidays so that is kind of scary, said Lt. Derrick Smith with the Salvation Army in Alamance County.
Along with scaling back on food, the nonprofit may also have to cut some of the food pantrys hours.
We would hate to do that, but thats one of the things we would have to consider, Smith said.

Alamance United Way To Host Community

United Way of Alamance County will be hosting a community-wide food drive, with eight local food pantries participating, on Saturday June 5 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The participating food pantries are as follows: Manna Market in Mebane at 301 S. Third Street Little Portion Food Pantry, The Healing Station FRC, The Salvation Army, and Trinity Worship Center Food Pantry all in Burlington Safe Food Pantry, Dreamalign Ministries, Stone Soup Menus, Inc. all in Graham.
Those who wish to donate can simply go to one, or more, of the eight locations and drive up to a designated drop-off station where shelf-stable foods can be donated.
Sally Gordon, community change director at United Way of Alamance County, said organization began hosting food drives since last March. However, this time they wanted to host a community-wide food drive that would expose the public to the numerous food pantries across the county.
Our goal for this pantry, instead of having one fixed site, where folks could come drop off their shelf stable items, we really wanted to highlight the location of some of the pantries , Gordon said. Some people might not know that there’s a pantry right in their neighborhood or a mile or two from their house that is struggling and need some food.
Gordon said United Way of Alamance County hopes the food drive will help highlight the needs of participating food drives, especially because donations tend to subside in the summer.

Catholic Charities in Alamance, North Carolina are open to families on a first-come, first-serve basis. The centers operate during normal business hours, and provide walk-ins with groceries, food boxes, and items to prepare a meal.
The food pantries are like grocery stores, allow clients the ability to choose the items they need from the groceries that are available on site.
First-time clients of the food pantry will need to apply, and this is done from a one-page application. An applicant will need to provide basic household member as well as demographic information.

Lets Talk About It: Food Insecurity In Alamance County
For Elon students, its easy to get lost in the Elon Bubble, but the outside community is not nearly as privileged as the campus we so love. In fact, according to census data from 2019, approximately 15% of Alamance County residents live in poverty. Though there are many aspects of povertyhousing, health care, educationone specific one stands out in Alamance County in particular: food insecurity.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture defines food insecurity as the lack of consistent access to enough nutritionally adequate and safe foods for an active and healthy life. Prior to the pandemic, nearly 14 million U.S. households experienced food insecurity at some point during the year, according to 2019 USDA data.
In comparison to states nationwide, North Carolina ranks ninth of the top ten most insecure states, according to recent data from Feeding America. But the food insecurity statistics within Alamance County are just as staggering as the statesaccording toFeeding Americas most recent Map the Meal Gap project data, the countys food insecurity rate is 14%, which equals about 22,470 people.

As we get into this year, toward the end of the year and beyond, are we still gonna have the support that were going to need? said Mike Darrow, executive director of Feeding the Carolinas. Were still gonna be feeding, literally feeding the Carolinas.
North Carolinas food insecurity rate was 14% of the population in 2018, according to Feeding America. Alamance Countys 2018 food insecurity rate was also at 14% however, the countys child food insecurity rate tops that at 19.7%. These figures compare to the overall national food insecurity rate of 11.5%, according to Feeding America.

More recent, pandemic-era data on food security has yet to be officially calculated, but projections and Feeding the Carolinas, a regional partner of Feeding America, estimate that food insecurity has definitely increased in North and South Carolina since the pandemic began.
I mean it was really crazy the fluctuation that we had in the people that came, Barefoot said. I think because people were very weary about coming out.

Durham County Residents may receive diapers once a month:
Distribution of diapers: Mondays through Thursdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and Wednesdays 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Families are eligible to receive diapers once a month. Parents receiving diapers can also pick up food boxes during distributions Wednesday from 10am-1pm and 5pm-7pm as well as Thursday from 10am-1pm.
Urban Ministries DurhamDistribution of diapers: Monday/Wednesday/Friday 1-3 p.m. and Tuesday/Thursday 9-11 a.m. and 5-6:30 p.m. Families are eligible every 30 days. IDs for both the parent and children needing diapers are required for the first visit. UMD accepts almost any form of ID . Parents receiving diapers also qualify for clothing and food which are both distributed during those hours of operation .
Welcome BabyDurham families may receive diapers and clothes every other month-Distribution days are Friday’s from 9am-1pm. If you are new to Welcome Baby, no appointment needed for your first visit. Please bring a photo ID, proof of Durham address and a Medicaid or Birth Certificate for each child needing diapers and or clothes.
