What It’s Like To Volunteer At A Food Bank

Mobile food pantry helping Charlotte families in need

Every volunteer experience is a little different. Here are some things you might do as a volunteer:

  • Sort and pack food: You can keep the shelves stocked by assembling food boxes for distribution.
  • Assist at mobile pantries, drive-thru pantries, and no-contact distributions: Help your neighbors feed their families.
  • Deliver meals: With many communities sheltering in place, you can help ensure our most vulnerable neighbors have the food they need while staying safe.
  • Glean and garden: Volunteers collect food left in the fields after harvest or help tend the food bank or food pantry’s community garden.
  • Volunteer from home: Some food banks have moved their volunteer shifts online and are asking volunteers to help fundraise or spread awareness.

Your safety is a top priority. The Feeding America network follows all Center for Disease Control and local guidelines for sanitation, hygiene, and social distancing to ensure staff and volunteers are safe. This may include masks, additional handwashing stations, gloves, reduced group sizes, and other safety precautions.

Home Of Food For Fairview

FOOD FOR FAIRVIEW is a local food pantry serving Fairview, N.C. and the surrounding community. The all volunteer pantry was organized in 1999 and is located in the Fairview Community Center at 1357 E. Charlotte Hwy. We are open for assistance on Mondays from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm.

Food for Fairview

We are a Clients Choice pantry, in which families receive individual attention from volunteers in selecting food and hygiene products. As clients walk through the pantry, they are allowed to choose the vegetables, meat products, soups, baking items, pastas, etc. that their family can use. This interaction with the families allows us to provide assistance in a compassionate manner to those members of our Fairview community who are experiencing financial hardship.

Our goal at Food for Fairview is to work with like-minded individuals and other local organizations to help eliminate hunger in the Fairview community and the greater WNC surrounding area. Individuals, companies, grass root organizations, churches, schools, colleges and scouting groups are encouraged to contact us if you feel you can contribute your time and efforts to assist us in expanding our outreach. We depend on the support of people like you to help us accomplish this goal.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

· Donation of Money allows Food for Fairview to purchase food taking advantage of Manna Food Bank in Asheville where food can be purchased in bulk at a savings. We also shop local stores.

From its inception in 2008, the Dilworth Soup Kitchens goal has been to provide free, nutritious and delicious meals to anyone — with no requirements or questions asked. Volunteer At The Food Bank

Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Food Banks mission. Every day, Food Bank volunteers are making a tangible contribution to our communities. Volunteers are vital to ensuring nutritious food reaches our neighbors in needs. We could never do this important work alone!

I enjoy volunteering immenselyit feels like genuinely useful work, and is a nice physical break from my screen-heavy job. Ive also enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about the food distribution system in the USto see what happens to extras/seconds/damaged/other unwanted items from supermarkets/producers, what happens to stuff you give to food drives, what the government does and doesnt do to ensure food security. -Volunteer

The Food Bank is honored to be certified by Points of Light as a Service Enterprise! Our certification signifies that we have the capability and management expertise to strategically use our amazing volunteers to make an even bigger difference, not only in our warehouses, but in our communities. This is a prestigious accomplishment, and we are proud to join the top 11 percent of nonprofits nationwide in volunteer management and organizational performance.

How Porch Works

PORCH is built around the very simple idea of a neighborhood food drive. Heres how it works, in three easy steps:

  • Once a month, on a designated day, residents place a food donation on their front porch.
  • A volunteer neighborhood coordinator goes porch to porch and picks up the food donations.
  • The donated food is transported by car to a local food bank or food pantry

The three-step process is easy, fast, and its also safe.
