Food Bank Of The Heartland: Need Greater Now Than At Start Of Pandemic

Shine the Light on Hunger drive gets underway alongside Omahas Holiday Lights Festival

OMAHA, Neb. – On Thanksgiving evening, the city of Omaha will turn on tens of thousands of lights to kick off the 23rd Holiday Lights Festival.

While they will certainly illuminate the new look of Gene Leahy Mall, organizers are hoping they will also put us in the holiday mood and remind us to share and help those less fortunate.

With its Shine a Light on Hunger drive, the Food Bank for the Heartland has set a goal of raising the equivalent of 3 million meals to help the food bank fight hunger in our community.

Food Bank for the Heartland unloads food for 93 counties across Nebraska and eastern Iowa, in the last fiscal year the food bank provided more than 26 million meals, and its not enough.

I never thought I would stand in front of anybody and say that the need for food assistance is worse than it was at the height of the pandemic but it is were seeing more people needing food assistance because of inflation, said Brian Barks, president and CEO of the Food Bank for the Heartland.

Theyre working hard at the food bank to fill the warehouse. They need boxed meals, cereal, soup, canned tuna, and chicken sauces, macaroni and chese anything that has a longer shelf life.

This food will help families manage their tight budgets.

Founded in 1981 and headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, Food Bank for the Heartland is a 501 nonprofit organization that distributes food to 535 food pantries, schools, emergency shelters and other nonprofit partners. We are the largest food bank in Nebraska and Iowa, serving 93 counties in the two-state region.

Fighting hunger is an ongoing, collaborative effort. We work with individuals, organizations, food manufacturers and distributors, grocery stores, the USDA and Feeding America to procure food. The Food Bank also purchases food to supplement donations. For every dollar we receive, we can provide three meals.

Food Bank for the Heartland operates its own programs that serve vulnerable populations directly. They include Kids Cafe, BackPack, Mobile Pantry, SNAP and Kids Cruisin Kitchen. As the number of hungry children, families and seniors increases, these programs expand to meet the growing need.

We moved to our current 76,000-square-foot facility in 2011. During FY 2017, we distributed 22 million meals to our nonprofit partners that have touched the lives of people in the community. We are grateful to the individuals, organizations and companies that support our vision of eradicating hunger in our community by donating time, money and food.

The Food Banks need has doubled while purchasing costs have risen almost tenfold as grocery stores donate half the food they normally do.

Usually, the Food Bank spends $73,000 per month to buy food. In March, the nonprofit spent $675,000.

Barks said Aprils food and operational costs could top $1 million.

While we can buy food, it takes longer for us to get it, he said. Theres a lot of competition out there for that food.

The situation is similarly dire across the country. As public school systems shuttered, students who rely on receiving meals there were in many cases left in the lurch. Many churches, schools and community organizations that had once distributed food were forced to close. All of that has led to greater demand at food banks and pantries.

Even as donations of money have increased across the nation, many orders placed by food banks were canceled as suppliers struggled to keep up with panic-buying.

The Food Bank for the Heartland distributes food to 600 pantries, shelters and partners across Nebraska and western Iowa. It receives food from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and buys it through Feeding America, which works with 200 food banks across the country.

The pantry is professionally sanitized twice a week, and volunteers wear homemade masks sewn by a church member, said Susann Henry, the director of the pantry.

How Food Banking Works

Omaha Runners Take Part In Thanksgiving Races

OMAHA, Neb. – Thursday morning hundreds of people got their work out in before Thanksgiving dinner.

Runners and walkers got an early start at two Thanksgiving races.

Dressed with tutus around their waists and turkeys on their heads, more than 2,000 people ran in the Bank of America Omaha Turkey Trot 5K.

Its just a great recognition of what Omaha has to offer and being thankful for our community and thankful for the friendships we can form, said Connor Mazzea, the head coach of the Bellevue East Cross Country Team.

While some saw it as a for bonding, it was also a time of giving back.

This year the benefit organization is Make-A-Wish Foundation, said Krista Honid, the onsite race chair for the Omaha Turkey Trot.

As the runners made their way past Charles Schwab field, others were crossing the finish line at the Feasts and Feathers Run at Cunningham Lake.

For people to come out here and break a sweat but also give back to the community, its just more than I can even articulate, said Co-race director Vaneesa Urbach.

Their cause is for the Food Bank of the Heartland. And they hope their efforts in raising money and collecting food will one day put an end to hunger.

On a day of such abundance, when all of us are going to go back and eat our meals, we want people to have that same security, Urbach said.

You can still donate to both organizations even after Thanksgiving day. Feast and Feathers organizers say theyve collected over 15,000 pounds of food.

Walking is still allowed at West Papio Trail. Omaha closed all city parks through April 30 to combat COVID-19. While trails and sidewalks remain open, everything else in the parks is closed. Groups larger than 10 people are prohibited, and people must keep a physical distance of 6 feet or more.

Greater Omaha Packing Company Partners With Food Bank For The Heartland

Greater Omaha Packing Company announces a partnership with Food Bank for the Heartland to routinely donate high-quality beef, providing nutritious protein for residents in Omaha and Western Iowa communities. In September, Greater Omaha donated 2,100 pounds of ground beef, the equivalent of 8,400 servings of protein.

To kick off the efforts, an employee food drive collected non-perishable food items that pair well with ground beef, such as tomato sauce, boxed meals and pasta. This partnership builds on previous 2021 donations totaling 14,000 pounds, or $50,000, for the Food Bank for the Heartland, the equivalent of 56,000 protein servings.

The Greater Omaha Packing and Food Bank for the Heartland food drive partnership is part of a larger initiative Greater Omaha Packing has established to strengthen the Omaha community and support the companys employees. Omaha Travel Nurse Agency Triage Donates 87000 Meals To Heartland Kids Against Hunger

OMAHA, NEB., Nov. 29, 2022 — Triage, an Omaha-based allied and travel nurse agency, is donating more than 87,000 meals to Heartland Kids Against Hunger.

Triages donation of $34,000 is the largest donation in Heartland Kids Against Hungers history. The funds will be used to buy more than 87,000 meals that will be packaged and sent outside Ukraine to help support people who have been impacted by Russias invasion of Ukraine. In addition to donating funds to purchase the meals, more than 100 Triage employees in Omaha will help package the food for shipping on December 1st and 2nd.

Triages history of giving stretches back years. In previous years, Triage donated over 300,000 diapers to the Open Door Missions Lydia House. This year, with the war in Ukraine, the company set its sights on expanding its charitable reach. Triage employees raised funds with a number of fun office events, including a margarita and bloody mary contest and a silent auction where Triage auctioned off an exclusive, climate-controlled, underground parking spot, a Husker-themed basket and one filled with Triage swag.

Our team works hard every day, but we know its also important to take time and give back to others. Food Bank Of The Heartland Hosts Stuff The Truck To Help Fight Hunger

OMAHA, Neb. – Its the season of giving and Food Bank of the Heartland is working to give back to those in need.

Saturday they were stationed outside the Bakers at 132nd and West Maple, inviting shoppers to donate just a few groceries as they left the store.

All of the food collected goes to neighbors in need.

Saturdays event goes along with their Shine a Light on Hunger drive. Theyre working to raise the equivalent of 3 million meals to help fight hunger in our community.

Earlier this week the food bank told 6 News theyre seeing more people needing food assistance due to inflation.

Right now our neighbors are making unthinkable decisions deciding between paying for their rent or putting food on the table, or paying for medication or going grocery shopping, said Stephanie Sullivan with Food Bank of the Heartland. No one should have to make that decision. With one in 10 Heartland neighbors right now struggling with food insecurity, we are just hoping to provide them with hope and nutritious meals this holiday season,

Theyre also asking for helping hands before Thanksgiving Day as they still need some volunteers to sign up.
