In the interest of the health and safety of our community, our Emergency Food Pantry at the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley has now moved to a mobile distribution model..
The Food Bank RGV is located at 724 N. Cage Blvd. in Pharr, TX 78577.
The Drive Thru Emergency Pantry at the Food Bank RGV should be used when there is no food in the home or on an emergency basis. You may only use the pantry or Emergency services at the Food Bank once within a 30 day period.
At our on-site DTEP distributions:
- You must wear a face covering.
- Please bring your picture I.D. and proof of address.
- Vehicle trunk must be empty. Food will not be placed in the front or back seat of the vehicle.
- Maximum of 2 people in car / 2 families max per car. All occupants must wear a face covering.

Tracking Citrus Health In The Texas Rio Grande Valley
Growing up in the Texas Rio Grande Valley – in the richness of Mexican-Texan culture, tradition, and food – citrus is a staple in our everyday life. But I never knew that diseases threatened citrus production. That changed this summer. As a communications intern, I had the opportunity to job shadow employees in APHIS Citrus Health Response Program . CHRP is responsible for surveying and regulating invasive pests and diseases that harm citrus crops:
- Citrus black spot
- Citrus leprosis
- Citrus variegated chlorosis
At the CHRP office in Edinburg, Texas, I met Emma Perez, Plant Health Safeguarding Specialist. Our main goal is to prevent disease from coming and spreading into the Valley and impacting our commercial growth, Ms. Perez stated.
Texas is the 3rd largest citrus-producing state, so CHRP is vital to protecting local plant life and preventing disruptions to the local economy. The day I went out with CHRP, two inspection teams had been dispatched to Pharr, Texas. The first team spoke to a resident with an orange tree, asking to inspect for citrus diseases. When permission was granted, plant protection and quarantine technicians and aids looked for signs of citrus diseases.

The situation is very difficult. Thats the phrase echoed by many as they walk inside the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley.
Armando Torres says hes been coming to the food bank for three years to receive his bundle of food.
Torres, who has been living out of his car for the past six years, turns to the food bank for help.
Right now, on average, its roughly close to 62,000 people a week, Ruby Martinez with Food Bank RGV said.
A number, which may go up, as they begin their busiest season of the year.
The electricity bill goes up, the bills go up, said Martinez. Food is the last thing on their mind and their budget.
Food assistance is given to residents throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
Some efforts include a mobile food pantry that goes to rural areas in Cameron, Willacy and Hidalgo County.
Thats why donations are highly encouraged during this crucial time.
Even with a $10 donation, thats 50 full meals that we can provide, Martinez explained.
Whether it be canned goods, food items or even monetary donations, that help in turn goes back to helping others in need.
Lisa Lopez is one person who came to the food bank for the first time, alongside her two daughters, all with the sole purpose to bring food to the table.
I havent gone through all this stuff. But we got a lot of stuff, so this is going to help us out a lot, Lopez said.
Food Bank Rgv Asking For Donations
PHARR, Texas With rising costs of food, many will turn to the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley for emergency food assistance this season, a release from the food bank stated.
Due to the anticipated high demand, the Food Bank of the RGV is in need of monetary donations to help feed people at risk of hunger this season.
The increase in need, higher costs and supply chain issues are causing the food bank to work harder than ever to meet the growing needs of the community, the release stated.
We are constantly moving food out the doors to our partner agencies and trying to restock our shelves, Libby A. Saenz, chief executive officer of the Food Bank of the RGV, said. However, we cannot do this alone. We need the communitys help. Donations are down but expenses keep going up.
For those experiencing a food emergency, the food banks onsite emergency pantry provides a bag of shelf-stable foods and a referral to a pantry near them, for the next month.
An average of 76,000 people are serviced every week through the banks 275 partner agencies. Partner agencies receive food and resources from the food bank for direct distribution to the public, the release stated.

Food Bank Rio Grande Valley Holds Free Drive
The Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley will be holding a free drive-thru produce pantry on Thursday for Veterans.
The free drive-thru produce pantry will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the McAllen V.A. Outpatient Clinic on 901 E. Hackberry Ave. in McAllen. Veterans planning to go must take their V.A. identification card and make sure to use the clinics entrance off Jasmine Ave.
The Food Bank RGV will be holding these free drive-thru produce pantries monthly.

Restaurant Company Gifts Truck And $52k To Food Bank Rgv
PHARR, Texas The Darden Restaurant Company announced a donation to the Food Bank of the RGV.
Dardens public information office revealed the gift of a 26-foot refrigerated truck to the Food Bank RGV as well as $52,000 to use for food and other needs.
The company owns and operates Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, Cheddars Scratch Kitchen, Yard House and a number of other restaurants nationwide.
The company said with the rate of inflation causing grocery prices to spike by more than 13% over the last year, families are turning to local food banks for support.
Local food banks are also dealing with the impacts of inflation, resulting in higher costs for food and the transportation needed to acquire and deliver food to their communities.
Across our company, we have a higher purpose to nourish and delight everyone we serve, and that includes the communities where we operate our restaurants, said Rick Cardenas, President and CEO of Darden Restaurants. Were uniquely positioned to help in the fight against hunger, and were proud to continue helping more Feeding America member food banks increase access to nutritious food for people who need it most.
Darden added that the truck and financial donation marks the latest effort in their ongoing commitment to help fight hunger.

We are actively recruiting volunteers to help us move our fresh and nutritious food into the hands of our neighbors in need. You can volunteer individually or as a group in a team-building station. Our volunteer stations range from packing boxes in our Senior Box Program, to bagging fresh produce in our Food Sourcing station to restocking our shelves in our Whataburger School Tools Resource Center.
Our volunteer hours are flexible and our historical warehouse can accommodate up to 150 volunteers at a time. For every 1 hour that you volunteer, you help us provide 105 Meals!
During this challenging time we are doing everything possible to ensure your safety when you volunteer. We follow guidelines as outlined by the CDC for any person who is found to be positive. We believe when guidelines are followed during ones volunteer service, the opportunity for transmission of COVID-19 is mitigated.
