Shopping hours for Older Adults
- Safeway: Currently open from 9a-10p Also, Safeway is setting aside the hours of 7-9 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursdays for elderly and at-risk shoppers.
- Target: All stores close at 9 p.m. and reserves the first shopping hour of every Wednesday for elderly and at-risk customers.
- Trader Joes: All Trader Joes stores will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. until further notice.
- Lucky – Tuesdays & Thursdays 6am-9am are reserved for Seniors and guest with Compromised Health
- Raleys/Nob Hill: Raleys/Nob Hill will not be adjusting hours, but is creating discounted grocery bags, or Senior Essentials Bags, available for curbside or in-store pickup. Read more about Raleys grocery bag offers and efforts to serve seniors here.
- Whole Foods – The Monterey Whole foods will be open on Wednesdays for individuals 60+ from 8am-9am.
- Dollar General – 7am-8am everyday is open for seniors to shop.

Donate Money To Disaster Relief Funds
The Community Foundation for Monterey County has created the Monterey County Storm Relief Fund to assist those affected by the 2023 winter storm. Donations will provide emergency assistance and relief through local nonprofits for needs including food, emergency shelter, financial assistance to those evacuated, support for first responders, as well as recovery efforts. Your gift will support the affected residents of Monterey County, California and is fully tax deductible. 100% of donations will be used for grantmaking.

Putting The Heal In Health Care: At The Food Bank For Monterey County Working With The Agricultural Community Is The Best Way To Meet The Communitys Nutrition Needs
For Melissa Kendrick, the CEO and Executive Director of the Food Bank for Monterey County, her mission is two-fold. Like every food bank, the organization strives to end hunger in the communityand in Monterey County, this is a pressing issue, as it is estimated that one in three children and one in four adults are affected by food scarcity. The number of food insecure clients reached by the food bank are now quadruple what they were pre-COVID.
That, believe it or not, is the easier problem for the food bank to solve. An established infrastructure existsa COVID-tested supply chain, at thatto get food from the fields to those who need it most. The more difficult issue is the one that requires educational outreach alongside these logistics. Its not just important that we feed people, Kendrick said. Its also important what we feed people.
Kendrick and her team want to transform the health of the community through good nutrition. And that, she said, is a much more complicated long-term issue than beating hunger. We have sick care here, not health care, and we have no preventative medicine, Kendrick said of societys overarching attitude towards wellbeing.
That needs to change, and the best way to do so is a straightforward solution, especially in an area as agriculturally blessed as Monterey County. Preventative medicine, first and foremost, is food, she said. Its time, in other words, to put the heal in health care.

Free Food Pantries In Monterey County
Find where to turn to for free food, groceries, and meals in Monterey County California. A number of churches, pantries, and food banks that may be near you provide help in an emergency situation, and some locations may be able to facilitate longer term assistance. Centers may process applications for food stamps or other government programs such as summer meals or snacks for students when they are out of school. The hours of most of the pantries are limited. In addition, the resources and funding that is available will also be limited, mostly by available donations and volunteers. Most of the non-profit organizations, churches, and government programs will focus on helping families with children, the elderly, and disabled. What We Do
As sole provider of emergency supplemental food for over 25 years, we continue to distribute over 10 million pounds annually. Emergency Food Assistance Program provides nutritious staples at 25 monthly sites. We distribute exclusively fresh produce at over 50 countywide locations: 10 Free Farmers Market sites, 16 weekly Senior Produce sites, and weekly Farmworker Mobile Produce Pantry deliveries to farm fields. Kids N.O.W. provides weekend nutrition via food bags to children each Friday. We supply food to over 150 nonprofits through Agency Clearinghouse. In the past 10 years, service has gone up more than 40% and our programs are needed now more than ever. When hunger occurs in a large swath-34%-of the county’s population, the economy, schools, workplaces, healthcare systems, neighborhoods, and cultural life of the community are all affected. While those directly experiencing hunger suffer the most, not one person is untouched.
Who We Are
The Food Bank for Monterey County serves 1 in 5 residents, over half of them children. Our mission is “to lead community efforts in the awareness and elimination of hunger in Monterey County” and we have served as the sole emergency supplemental food resource for over 25 years. Monterey County ranks highest among all 58 state counties in food insecurity, child poverty, and incidence of chronic illnesses such as Type 2 diabetes that are caused by insufficient nutrition. Our programs assure struggling families, children, seniors, farmworkers, and other vulnerable residents of quality food that assuages their hunger and addresses their nutritional concerns. 95 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to food programs and 1 dollar can provide 5 dollars worth of food.
