Governor Cooper Tours Food Bank Of Central And Eastern North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C. September is hunger action month and this an initiative to help inspire people to take action and raise awareness and help people experiencing food insecurity.

Governor Roy Cooper and NC First Lady Kristin Cooper took part in hunger action month on Friday. They stopped to take a look at the growing garden on the food banks campus full of fresh produce before heading inside to help volunteers with sorting sweet potatoes

Governor Cooper said 12% of North Carolinas population can not count on a good meal everyday.

1 in 6 of those people are children. That is unacceptable. We have a lot of work to do, our Department of Health and Human Services is working to administer several programs that help people, said Cooper.

He said they encourage people and programs that help teach people how to grow their own foods.

Jennifer Caslin with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina said over the summer they served over 300,000 kids in the area who needed a meal during the day.

She said inflation has hit them just like everyone else, but has high hopes as the move into the fall and winter months.

Weve seen you know a little bit of a dip and donations in terms of the larger donations but overall weve been very lucky and 97,000,000 tons of food last year so its still coming in it may be a little slower than it was before, said Caslin.

The mission of the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina is to harness and supply resources so that no one goes hungry in central and eastern North Carolina.

Established in 1980, the Food Bank is a nonprofit organization that has provided food for people at risk of hunger in 34 counties for 30 years. The Food Bank serves a network of more than 800 partner agencies such as soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and programs for children and adults through warehouses in Durham, Greenville, New Bern, Raleigh, the Sandhills and Wilmington.

Local Food Bank Gov Cooper Gather Thanksgiving Meals For Those In Need

Governor Roy Cooper was at the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina to put turkeys on pallets so they can be delivered around the state.

RALEIGH, N.C. As we all get ready to fill our table for Thanksgiving its also time to remember those struggling to put food on the table.

Governor Roy Cooper rolled up his sleeves and got into the spirit of giving.

A lot of families arent making the choice of what kind of vegetables or what kind of desserts theyre going to have. They are making the choice between buying gas for the car and buying enough food for home, he said while helping out at the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.

Butterball donated all 300 turkeys, each of them between 16 and 20 pounds, and theyll be delivered to families in need throughout the holiday season a welcome donation as turkey prices rise nearly 20% this year.

About 12% of North Carolinians face food insecurity but this time of year the goal is help as many families as possible.

Food Gets To The Food Banks Partner Agencies And Into The Community In Multiple Ways:

• Some agencies come directly to our branches to pick up needed items. These agencies make appointments and are scheduled on a regular basis.

• Other agencies place orders with the Food Bank, and the food is then delivered to them, free of charge, on a regular basis.

We also work with local farmers to facilitate donations of nutritious produce directly to agencies, supporting and empowering our local communities and food systems. This is a way to support and empower our local communities and food systems by coordinating donations between donors and local agencies. You can learn more about our Food Sourcing here.

Occasionally, the Food Bank will work with local agencies to provide direct distributions in communities where there is great or urgent need, for example, after a hurricane or disaster.

Feeding America Urges Congress To Pass Omnibus Spending Package That Includes Significant Provisions To Help End Child Summer Hunger

Today, lawmakers on Capitol Hill introduced bipartisan provisions to improve and expand federal nutrition programs that help fight child hunger in the summer. Feeding America commends Sens. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., and John Boozman, R-Ark., for negotiating these provisions, which will create a nationwide Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer grocery card program and significantly increase access to summer meals, particularly for children in rural communities. These critical anti-hunger provisions have been added to the fiscal year 2023 omnibus spending bill, which also includes important annual funding for The Emergency Food Assistance Program and other anti-hunger programs.

When schools close their doors for the summer, millions of children lose access to their only reliable source of nutritious meals. For decades, child nutrition programs have played a critical role in safeguarding our nations children against hungerbut the programs are only as effective as their ability to reach children in need. In 2019, approximately 80% of children who were eligible for summer meals did not access them. While these critical investments come with the disappointing early sunsetting of temporary COVID pandemic relief programs, they represent a historic step forward in closing the summer hunger gap that shouldnt be passed up.

Food Bank Of Central And Eastern Carolina Named 2020 Food Bank Of The Year

GREENVILLE, N.C. With so many people unemployed, especially now during the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for food is higher than ever.

The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina has stepped up to help, and Feeding American recently named them the 2020 Food Bank of the Year.

During the pandemic, the food bank has continued warehouse operations, distributing millions of pounds of food and household supplies to thousands of struggling families.

Officials say they are so proud of their staff and volunteers who are helping families experiencing food insecurities. But they say they still need support.

The tremendous need out there has made it necessary for us to rent additional trucks, hire more people, and with that, our trucks and equipment are experiencing breakdowns and need repairs, Eastern Regional Director George Young said.

Since March 16, Young says the food banks New Bern and Greenville locations have distributed over twenty million pounds of food.

Our partnership with the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina was born from acts of generosity, collaboration, and a desire to improve lives in our community. The Food Bank had received a large donation of sweet potatoes from a local famer, John Bone of Bone Farms, a family farm in Nashville, NC. Looking for a way to make the produce available to its local agencies, the Food Bank reached out us and we couldnt have been happier to help.

Our first effort was to create co-branded, recyclable packaging for the donated sweet potatoes. But we wanted to do more so we brought in our partners at Berry Cold, a family-run processing facility in Eastern NC. Together, we facilitated a local Blueberry product to add to the Food Banks produce distribution.

The Food Bank works with local organizations every day to help put an end to hunger in the state of North Carolina. Through an intricate network of over 900 partner agencies, such as homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and private businesses, The Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC works to nourish people, build solutions, and empower communities.
