Food Pantry & Food Assistance

Approximately one in seven households in Connecticut is struggling to put food on the table. The JFSGNH Food Pantry & Food Assistance Program is striving to keep this number from increasing by providing nutritious food to individuals and families in Greater New Haven. The Pantry and its food programs serve people near or below the poverty line, and those who are nutritionally at risk.

Our Food Pantry, located at 1440 Whalley Ave., offers non-perishable foods, fresh produce and fruits, and frozen items to needy individuals and families as a once monthly supplement.

The Food Pantry is open on Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9-12 .

Emergency Food Requests For emergency food, please call 397-0796 to schedule an appointment. We return calls within 24 hours except on weekends, pantry closures and holidays.

All requests must verbally attest to the USDA Emergency Food Assistance Program client certification. Additional information may be requested for participation in the JFS Food Assistance Program and may include a current photo ID. If an ID does not have current address, please bring mail or or another document that will show your current address along with your photo ID.

The Pantry is funded in part by grants from the United Way of Greater New Haven funding), the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, the Jewish Federation and Jewish Foundation of Greater New Haven. The Pantry also receives product from the USDA in the form of TEFAP commodities.

The mission of IRIS is to enable refugees and other displaced people to establish new lives, regain hope, and contribute to the vitality of Connecticuts communities.

Description

In fiscal year 2016, the U.S. government invited 97,263 refugees from all over the world to come to this country. Over 900 came to Connecticut, where they were placed with one of three refugee agencies, including IRIS, which welcomed 475. Their needs are significant and IRIS is their primary resource as they begin to rebuild their lives after years of persecution and displacement. IRIS helps refugees on the road to self-sufficiency by providing lifesaving support during their transition to life in the United States IRIS provides a wide array of services to these new Americans including daily English lessons, education and youth programs, access to health care and a thorough multi-day cultural orientation. IRIS also works intensively with each new arrival to begin the important work of finding employment. IRIS attempts to meet all of the needs of its clients by providing extra services including a womens group and a variety of young peoples groups. And if family members have been left behind, our legal office will work to reunite them.

Emergency Foodbank: Monday Thru Friday 10

This program is open to community members in need on a monthly basis and currently serves approximately 60 families per month. In addition, the Emergency Food Service is available for immediate emergency needs and accepts referrals from 211, juvenile and adult probation. The BIMEC Food Ban serves those of low-income and at-risk populations in immediate and surrounding areas to Dixwell-Newhallville neighborhoods. These include the elderly, single parent, mental health, substance abuse and homeless populations. The populations of Dixwell and Newhallville communities are mainly low income and minorities with high rates of unemployment. These families have stretched their food budgets as far as possible resulting in sacrificing the quality of foods eaten. We provide nutritious options such as fresh fruits and vegetable to help supplement food budgets and support a healthy lifestyle. Many of our families are working families with insufficient income.

The Salvation Army provides programs to address hunger throughout Connecticut and Rhode Island. Intake and assessment for food-related programs will also provide referrals to other social services within The Salvation Army and throughout Connecticut and Rhode Island. The Salvation Army also provides hot meals year-round through various locations for those in need.

Additionally, The Salvation Army also offers numerous food pantries to provide groceries for families and individuals in need. Food is free, but some locations require appointments, while others are on a walk-in first come first serve basis, such as those operating units that offer bread programs.

Hot Meal Programs and Food Pantries

No one should ever go a day without a meal or feel ashamed about asking for help. Thats why many of our locations provide hot meals and free groceries year-round to anyone who needs them. East Haven Food Pantry

The East Haven food pantry has implemented a drive up option for pick up. Arrive during regular open hours, volunteers will place a variety of food items in your vehicle.
