Volunteer At The San Antonio Food Bank
Since its inception in 1980, the San Antonio Food Bank has been a major force in the fight against hunger in the San Antonio community. As a member of the Feeding America national coalition of food banks, the San Antonio Food Bank serves as a regional hub for food distribution to 200 partner food pantries scattered throughout Bexar and 15 surrounding counties in Southwest Texas. In 2020 alone, it collected and distributed 80 million pounds of food, providing meals to 120,000 individuals each week. To provide such a large degree of food assistance, the Food Bank requires the help of more than 100 volunteers each day to sort, package, and distribute the donated food items. Many of these volunteers participate as organized church groups who regularly assist the work of the Food Bank.
ACTS Core of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church is currently reviewing ways to better advance the Adoration, Community, Theology, and Service missions of the ACTS movement within the St. Francis community. As part of the Service mission, ACTS Core is organizing groups of St. Francis volunteers to assist in the vital work provided by the San Antonio Food Bank.
In 2021, St. Francis parishioners participated in a total of 36 San Antonio Food Bank volunteer sessions. Working with other volunteers present during those sessions, we created over 100,000 meals for the San Antonio community.

Daisycares Pet Food Program At The San Antonio Food Bank
DaisyCares and the San Antonio Food Bank have collaborated to create a designated pet food program, designed to provide struggling families and individuals with pet food assistance for their four legged family members. Cat and dog food is sourced through food drives, retail sites, and manufacturers/distributors.

DaisyCares has created the DaisyCares Pet Food Program to provide dog and cat food to needy families, enabling them to keep their companion animals when faced with economic hardship.
DaisyCares currently operates a pet food program with the San Antonio Food Bank in San Antonio, Texas.
The DaisyCares Pet Food Program provides access to pet food through the food bank as well as food pantry partners.
DaisyCares works with local retail stores and different pet food manufacturers to obtain donations of pet food and other pet related products for distribution.

What We Aim To Solve
Over the last number of years, community leaders in Southwest Texas have identified gaps in services for individuals in need of human and social services. One of the top priorities identified was access to food, particularly healthy food. With the backdrop of a multi-million dollar meal gap, hundreds of thousands of people struggling with food insecurity, many of them children, and the tremendous impact that nutrition-related illnesses like obesity, diabetes, and hypertension are having on work and school attendance/performance, the need for coordinated, efficient, and collaborative solutions to hunger are more than evident. There is a significant amount of excess food available in the community the challenge is accessing it, and getting it to right people , in the right amounts , at the right time .

What is the San Antonio Food Bank?
The San Antonio Food Bank provides food and grocery products to more than 500 partner agencies in 16 counties throughout Southwest Texas. In FY2013, the San Antonio Food Bank provided nearly 50 million pounds of food. The mission of the SAFB is to fight hunger in Southwest Texas through food distribution, programs, education, and advocacy.
Who receives emergency food assistance?
- 36% of our clients are children, under the age of 18 years old
- 46% of households include at least one employed adult
- 67% have incomes below the federal poverty level during the previous month
- 8% are homeless
- About 22% of clients are non-Hispanic white, 7% are non-Hispanic black, 69% are Hispanic, and the rest are from other racial groups
How is the Food Bank funded?
The San Antonio Food Bank relies on the generosity and support of local businesses, churches, foundations, corporations, government, civic groups and individuals in order to successfully continue serving Southwest Texans who are at risk of going hungry. We strive to maintain the highest standard of efficiency while providing food to those in need. 98% of donated resources go directly to food distribution programs. The San Antonio Food Bank has consistently received the highest 4-star rating from Charity Navigator.

St Stephens Care Center Food Pantry
Catholic Charities can help with basic needs while you work toward self-sufficiency. St. Stephens CARE Center provides Compassion, Aid, Respect, and Empowerment to those who need us most.
St. Stephens CARE Center is a client-choice food pantry for those who need us most. Clients can shop for food just like a grocery store, but they checkout for free, providing dignity to all.
Our food pantry provides immediate food assistance including canned goods, dry goods, dairy products, meat, bread and pastries, and even fresh, organic produce from our own St. Phocas Garden. Diapers are also available for clients.
In addition to food and clothing, we are also distributing box fans for Project Cool, a program that provides free box fans to seniors in an effort to provide heat relief and prevent heat-related illness during the hot summer months.
