The Southern Sustainable Agriculture Working Group was founded in 1991 to foster a movement towards a more sustainable farming and food system – one that is ecologically sound, economically viable, socially just, and humane. By building partnerships, sharing information, and conducting analysis, they transform isolated ideas and innovations into practical tools and approaches for widespread use. Raider Red’s Food Pantry periodically will have fresh produce. Through the months of June to October, the food pantry and the GRUB Farm partner to provide Raider Red’s Food Pantry with fresh, locally grown produce, ranging from yellow squash and zuchinni, to herbs, to various greens, to assorted fruits. Catch us next harvest season!

Produce is picked-up weekly and available to TTU students at the food pantry.

Food Pantry In Lubbock Texas

Volunteers deliver dry dog and cat food, every other week, to the pets of our clients who are unable to provide pet food to their furry friends. Donations of dry dog and dry cat food are always needed. Monetary gifts to the program, as well as pet memorials and pet tributes, are welcome. We are also able to help with limited veterinary care and boarding.

Flowers are donated by Lubbock Wholesale Florist.

Magazines, books, and other reading materials

Reading materials are provided by members of the Lubbock community. The City of Lubbocks library also provides Books on Wheels services to our clients.

Weekend Meal Sacks

Weekend meals are provided to 500 clients who have no access to, or assistance with meals over the weekend when Lubbock Meals on Wheels is closed. Weekend meals consist of a frozen meal and easy to prepare items such as soup, cereal, oatmeal, and crackers. This program has a maximum capacity and may have a waiting list at times.

Holiday Meals

Lubbock Meals on Wheels is closed on the following holidays. Extra food and fresh fruit are sent out prior to a holiday for which we are closed.

South Plains Food Bank Sees 70% Increase In Food Insecure People In 90 Days

As September marks the beginning of Hunger Action Month the South Plains Food Bank is taking initiative

LUBBOCK, Texas – According to the United States Department of Agriculture, more than 38 million people in the United States are food insecure. The South Plains Food Bank is recognizing Hunger Action Month by teaming up with local businesses for donations.

Morgan Baker, the Communications Director for the South Plains Food Bank, said this month really puts a spotlight on what they do at the South Plains Food Bank.

Food insecurity is so much bigger of an issue than people even remotely realize here in Lubbock, Baker said. Pre-pandemic, we were expecting to serve about 56,000 families every year. Now thats risen up to about 98,000.

These numbers are continuing to rise, in the last three months, the food bank has seen a 70 percent increase in the number of people they serve.

And thats continuing to rise. Thats not even counting the COVID stuff. So 98,000 plus 70 percent, Baker said.

This month, the South Plains Food Bank is running multiple campaigns with businesses.

Helping Hunger, which is a campaign that we are running with HEB. We are super excited about the donations that weve already received from that. It runs through October, Baker said. Were also running a special campaign with Whataburger, where all of the Whataburgers in the Lubbock, the South Plains area, and across Slaton are all making donations to the South Plains Food Bank.

The South Plains Food Bank , located in Lubbock, Texas, serves communities throughout West Texas by providing a helping hand to those experiencing food insecurity. This community-based organization was formed 38 years ago by Carolyn Lanier and Lodie Kemper who saw an opportunity to help others and make a difference in their community. Since then, the organization has grown and now extends throughout 20 counties in West Texas and employs more than 9,000 volunteers per year.

We do so much more than just feed people. Our mission statement is to alleviate hunger and give hope to the hungry and we embody that statement in all we do, whether that be through our programs, classes or everyday work, said SPFB, Communications Manager Morgan Baker.

SPFB offers several programs for volunteers and community members to participate in that give hope and enrich lives. They offer several programs within their Childrens Feeding Programs such as Kids Café which is an after-school feeding program to combat childhood hunger. They also have Summer Feeding, Snack Pack and Holiday Box programs. Additionally, their Mobile Pantry program partners with agencies in 19 of the 20 counties they serve to deliver food boxes to their most rural locations.

SPFB funding comes from area donors and food donations. Their donations greatly help them to be able to provide for their community while also helping them keep their programs going and their building maintained so they can continue to serve others.

Texas Organic Farmers & Gardeners Association is the leading voice of education and advocacy for organic food production in Texas. As a member-run, member-funded organization, it includes farmers, ranchers, gardeners, dairies, cheese makers, soil amendment producers, nurseries, food markets, farmers markets, educators, students, and more. Their mission is to educate producers and consumers on the many benefits of organic agriculture and to promote its use throughout Texas. They host numerous educational workshops and farm tours throughout the year.

Catalytic Converter Thief Targets South Plains Food Bank Trucks

LUBBOCK, Texas – The South Plains Food Bank could be out thousands of dollars after a thief pillaged some of its vehicles.

The food bank lost the catalytic converters out of four of its vehicles over the weekend.

In order to make its delivery routes on Monday, it had to use the entire mobile pantry and other backup vehicles to get food out to the other counties and its senior citizens.

Its difficult times for everybody but when somebodys stealing from a nonprofit whos trying to do good work, it really really impacted the entire community. It didnt just affect us, it affected everyone who depends on the South Plains Food Bank, said South Plains Food Bank Chief Operations Officer Jennifer Smith.

The food bank expects to pay more than $4,000 just for part-replacements alone.

How Do Drive

Culture and Community

There are lot of volunteers help at Drive-thru food pantries. While not all drive-thru pantries operate in the same way, here�s how most work:

Staff and volunteers direct visitors to the parking area.

Visitors pull up to the pantry in their car and are usually guided into a clearly marked queue. As people move through the pantry, staff will continue to move the cars forward to get everyone through as quickly and safely as possible.

Checkin.

You are required to fill some information for Pantry’s recording keeping.

Food is loaded into the cars.

Pre-packed bags of food, usually full of shelf-stable items like pasta, canned fruit and peanut butter, as well as fresh produce and meats are loaded by volunteers into the trunk of the car.
