A Tradition Of Generosity
On March 2007, the food bank held its first Empty Bowls fundraiser event at the Laredo Energy Arena. Since then, the event has become a staple fundraiser event for the South Texas Food Bank.
A great portion of the funding for our programs, in particular our Kids Cafés, comes from the money we raise from our annual Empty Bowls event. The event includes:
a dinner a recognition to longstanding supporters of the food banks mission a benefit concert and a silent auction featuring artworks from both local and regional artists.
The concert has become one of the areas most looked
forward to events of the summer. Our past concerts have drawn audiences from all over the state and Mexico. This is in part to the emphasis we put on offering our supporters the unique opportunity of enjoying audience-favorite artists from both the past and present at an affordable price. Past performers have included legendary acts such as: Three Dog Night, America, Foreigner, The Commodores, Kansas and more.
An average of 8,000 people attend this event.

Laredo Va Hosts Free Drive
LAREDO, Tex. – A J-ROTC group helped distribute food in time for Easter to our hometown heroes.
There were many volunteers who helped at the Laredo VA Clinic. The organization says the food was provided by the South Texas Food Bank. The agency says food insecurity is prevalent among veterans, especially those who have moved into transitional or supportive housing.
Crystal Cabido, a coordinator at the clinic, says the pandemic impacted several of our local veterans. Our veterans are elderly and we had some veterans that were affected by COVID. Some lost their jobs. So, we give a little bit that we can, from organizations, to be able to provide this.
Veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness are encouraged to contact the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 877-424-3838.

What Is The Difference Between A Food Bank And A Food Pantry
Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.
How Do Drive
There are lot of volunteers help at Drive-thru food pantries. While not all drive-thru pantries operate in the same way, heres how most work:
Staff and volunteers direct visitors to the parking area.
Visitors pull up to the pantry in their car and are usually guided into a clearly marked queue. As people move through the pantry, staff will continue to move the cars forward to get everyone through as quickly and safely as possible.
Checkin.
You are required to fill some information for Pantry’s recording keeping.
Food is loaded into the cars.
Pre-packed bags of food, usually full of shelf-stable items like pasta, canned fruit and peanut butter, as well as fresh produce and meats are loaded by volunteers into the trunk of the car.
