We Need To Raise 60 Percent Of Our Annual Budget In The Last Few Days Of The Year To Keep Food Flowing To The Needy
SAN FRANCISCO, CA Officials with the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank said Monday that their organization is urgently seeking funds as it continues to face challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Issues with labor shortages, increased transportation costs and food prices, and food scarcity have intensified over the last year, hindering the organization’s ability to provide people in need with groceries, food bank officials said.
Faced with higher expenses, the food bank is hoping to raise 60 percent of its annual budget by the year’s end.

Bulky And Expired Foods Are Not Acceptable
Produce items in bulk arent accepted because they are hard to manage and distribute and can cause a serious mess. Foods like beans, rice, seeds, and the like should be prepackaged in smaller increments so that theyre much easier to distribute. Also, not having proper packaging can be messy and attract bugs and rodents, leading to contamination. Expired or soon-to-be expired produce cannot be accepted because it is a health hazard and can get people sick. We Practice Food Safety Every Day
At the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank we take our responsibility to you and the people we serve very seriously. Donating food to our Food Bank isnt only smart, its safe, too. All of our drivers and warehouse staff are trained to handle food safely. They undergo yearly food-safety training. We have over 20 employees who are ServSafe certified, learn more here. Our trucks are refrigerated to keep food at safe temperatures. We train all partner agencies how to safely prepare and handle food they receive from the Food Bank. We evaluated our partner agency pantries and kitchens for their food-safety practices. We hold the AIB Food Safety Designation, learn more here and are routinely inspected by the USDA and State and County Public Health Inspectors.

ABOUT PETS ARE WONDERFUL SUPPORT FOOD BANK & BECOMING A VOLUNTEER:
The PAWS Pet Food Bank is the very first service provided by the PAWS program of Shanti Project and has been in operation since 1987.
The Food Bank provides PAWS clients with a supplemental allotment of pet food, litter and a variety of pet supplies every month. This basic but essential service can often mean the difference between our clients meeting their own nutritional needs and sacrificing their needs to feed their animal companions, or being able to keep their pets in their lives at all.
Many of our clients are unable to come to the Pet Food Bank due to their disability. We rely on the generosity and commitment of volunteers to deliver food and supplies to all of our homebound clients. Pet Food Bank volunteers are urgently needed during this period of the pandemic to ensure our community members and their pets receive these crucial supplies. Thats where you come in!
VOLUNTEER DUTIES:
- Deliver bags of pet food/supplies to 8-10 homebound clients in SF neighborhoods
- Delivery team consists of two people you must choose your own rider anyone you feel comfortable with during COVID
- On the day of your shift, you will pick up the delivery routes and bags from the PAWS office, and deliver items to all the clients in that route
- Client address and contact information will be provided in each delivery route
- Shifts take around 2-3 hours to complete

The San Francisco Food Bank To Provide Fixings For Thousands Through Holiday Food Distribution
Thanks to those with the drive to donate the Food Bank will distribute record amounts of food to those in need this holiday season
San Francisco, CA – Inside the San Francisco Food Bank, volunteers work to sort fresh fruits and vegetables, packaging boxes of stuffing and filling bags with canned green beans and turkey or chicken, while across the city of San Francisco and Marin those in need line up outside of one of over two hundred neighborhood grocery pantries to receive the first of what is to be many distributions of holiday food.
The San Francisco Food Bank is set to provide over 30,000 households with everything they need to prepare complete Thanksgiving meals in their own homes. This is an increase of more than 8,000 families from this time last year. In addition to chicken and turkey, the Food Bank will be distributing other traditional holiday staples including: stuffing, ingredients for pumpkin pie , green beans, onions, sweet potatoes, fresh potatoes, fruit, gravy, cranberry sauce, beans, rice, chocolate truffles and fresh baked bread thanks to local bread companies.
“We’ve seen a change in the number of people visiting the pantries this year,” said Paul Ash, Executive Director of the San Francisco Food Bank. “We expect to see a lot of first-time clients this holiday season. Many are working families who have seen a reduction in hours or have lost their jobs and will have to depend on the generosity of others to get their holiday meals together.”

Where To Donate Food In San Francisco For Those In Need
Did you know that Bay Area citizens will throw away $1,000 worth of food daily even though its easy to donate food in San Francisco? The United States Department of Agriculture estimated that between 70 to 80 billion pounds are wasted per year. A significant factor in the amount of wasted produce is thrown away when relocating.
Its time to make a change and put some of that produce to use by giving it to those that are less fortunate than ourselves. Produce Donations That Arent Accepted
Much like there are items movers wont move, there are foods that SF food bank donation centers and other establishments wont accept. If you arent sure what to look for, youre likely to have to keep some of those leftovers you dont want. To assist you, here is a quick list of items that are not acceptable for donations:
- Dented canned goods Any visible damage to canned goods could indicate that the contents have been spoiled.
- Anything in glass containers Glass can easily break, and its considered a safety hazard in some areas, so these establishments do not want any type of glass containers.
- Dairy Products As we all know, milk and most milk-based products spoil quickly. Yogurts, cheeses, creams, butter, and margarine are not acceptable unless in powdered form or shelf-stable.
- Refrigerated foods This includes anything that requires refrigeration. The facilities might not have refrigeration available and cant distribute any produce like meat.
- Homemade meals Most establishments cannot accept anything you prepared at home, because it has to be appropriately packaged for distribution though it is a nice gesture.
- Candy and sugar-sweetened drinks These items arent considered nutritional at all and therefore arent accepted.

SF-Marin Food BankThe Marin and San Francisco Food Banks merged in 2011 to become the SF-Marin Food Bank, which distributes enough food for more than 100,000 meals every day. During this time of year, the organization collects nearly half of its annual operating budget through donations and gathers thousands of pounds of non-perishable food.
Donate:You can drop off food donations at any of the locations listed in San Francisco or Marin. You can also host your own food drive.

St. Anthony FoundationSt. Anthony’s Dining Room serves 2,400 meals every day of the year. It also provides a number of programs, including medical assistance and a free clothing program.
