Taking A Look At The Numbers

The merger is aimed at bolstering the Marion County branch distribution level to perhaps 10 million pounds annually in a few years and provide programs like summer meals for school children, according to Derrick Chubbs, president and CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

Chubbs indicated the two food banks have worked together for 30 years but now have officially merged. He emphasized that the merger was about people not just increased food distribution numbers.

“We’re talking about people…children, veterans, seniors. The hunger gap is growing will have a positive impact. First Step has done amazing work but we can do more together. We don’t do this alone we need community support,” Chubbs said.

Chubbs said the number of people in need is underestimated” because some do not ask for help.

A Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida press release stated Feeding America, is a nationwide network of food banks and estimates more than 47,350 people in Marion County “will experience food insecurity at some point during the year.

The merger will “lead to increased food availability” for the area, the release said.

Help Fight Food Insecurity In Jax With Feeding Northeast Florida

As parents, weve all dealt with the consequences of overly hangry children. Maybe we forgot to pack a snack for our outing or had a late practice delay dinner. Weve seen firsthand what a brief lack of food does to young bodies and minds, and it is NOT. GOOD.

Now, imagine if your child had to skip a meal, or several, every week. Its difficult to think about, but hunger is a very real issue that many families in our community deal with on a daily basis. Rising housing rates and inflation are making it even more difficult for many to make ends meet, causing some to opt out of meals just to get by.

September is Hunger Action Month, an annual observance when people and organizations all over the country come together to address the silent crisis of hunger in our communities. Started in 2008 by Feeding America, the campaign brings awareness to hunger and food insecurity across the nation. In our area, Feeding Northeast Florida is leading the effort to highlight hunger here on the First Coast.

I think one of the most shocking things about hunger is how prevalent it is, but often unknown. Your neighbor, your coworker, your friend could be suffering from food insecurity, and youd never suspect it. Currently, Feeding Northeast Florida serves over 85,000 people every day, equal to one in seven adults and one in five children in the food banks eight-county service area.

Feeding Our Military Heroes

Research compiled by Veteran Affairs estimates that anywhere from 8 25 percent of the veteran population is food insecure. In Northeast Florida, that equates to 3 9,300 men and women who served in the U.S. Military are now experiencing hunger. Additionally, the Greater Jacksonville USO reports approximately 7,500 of our active-duty military living on the First Coast are food insecure to some degree. Feeding Northeast Florida is committed to giving back to those who risked everything to protect our freedom.

Veteran Meal Boxes

Feeding Northeast Florida partnered with United Way of Northeast Florida, DoorDash, and The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to deliver food to local veteran families, including homeless veterans. 250 veterans participated in the initiative and received a box of shelf-stable goods weekly in addition to fresh produce, dairy, and proteins.

Military Support Organizations

Feeding Northeast Florida has provided the crucial materials, equipment and food resources to support growth for several military support organizations such as The Greater Jacksonville USO, Five Star Veterans Center, and Northeast Florida Womens Veterans. We continue to provide food resources monthly to these organizations to support our military families.

Missing Meals Analysis Reveals Increase Due To Covid

Feeding Floridas revolutionary study allows us to pinpoint missing meals at hyper-local levels across the state. This Meal Deficit Metric translates into a more accurate, granular understanding of real hunger, which then allows for a more strategic investment in addressing it. A recent update to the MDM revealed an increase in weekly missing meals in 66/67 Florida counties.

Preparing For Disaster Relief

As the only network capable of ramping up 300% during times of natural disaster, Feeding Floridas food banks have the capacity and supplies needed to provide aid to people across the state. Through our partnership with Division of Emergency Management, we can assist the State Emergency Response Team immediately, providing life-changing supplies such as pallets of water, ready to eat meals, first aid and more.

Wecarejax Chief Now Leads Feeding Northeast Florida

A longtime nonprofit chief who once ran Beaches Emergency Assistance Ministry is the new president and CEO of Feeding Northeast Florida, a Jacksonville-based food bank that serves eight area counties.

Susan King started the new job Thursday, succeeding Frank Castillo, who departed in May for personal reasons. Board president Josh Martino led the nonprofit in the interim.

King, a certified public accountant and licensed real estate broker, left BEAM in 2017 to become president/CEO at Atlantic Beach Urban Farms. Since last fall she has been executive director of WeCareJax, formerly We Care Jacksonville, a volunteer coalition of medical professionals that provides free care to the city’s uninsured population.

“Susan’s strong financial background, leadership experience and heart for the underserved make her an excellent choice for this important role,” said Martino, who also cited her “passion for addressing social disparities.”

“Im confident she will deliver on our overarching mission of eradicating hunger in our community,” he said.

She said she loved her WeCareJax work and will continue to help plan the nonprofit’s upcoming Caring Awards fundraiser. But when Martino asked her to consider the food bank job, her long ties to “the hunger business” won out.

King previously served as a member of Feeding Northeast Floridas board of directors and spent about 20 years working as a financial professional primarily in commercial real estate development.

Expanding The Possibilities For Solving Hunger In Florida

Through collaboration and innovation, Feeding Florida member food banks are expanding the possibilities for solving hunger. Access to healthy nutritious food is fundamental and is the foundation from which the success of all other issues is determined. If a child is hungry, that child cannot learn. If an adult is hungry, they can neither meet nutritional needs faced daily nor overcome the barriers that keep families in persistent poverty.

With 12 network member food banks and over 2,400 partner agencies, we are the only network that serves all 67 Florida counties year-round, every single day. What We Aim To Solve

As the regions largest food bank and hunger relief network, Feeding Northeast Floridas mission is to improve the quality of life of Northeast Florida by addressing food insecurity, poverty, and poor health through providing nutritious foods and other essential goods to those in need in collaboration with community partners.Since 2014, our Jacksonville warehouse has partnered with feeding agencies and programs to provide food and hope to people who struggle to feed themselves and their families. With approximately 1.6 million people living in Baker, Bradford, Clay, Duval, Flagler, Nassau, Putnam, and St. Johns counties, FNEFL delivers hunger relief targeted to the 270,900 individuals who are categorized as food insecure . Working daily to find solutions to hunger, FNEFL addresses the issues of food insecurity and poverty through awareness, advocacy, education, and action in ways that promote dignity, respect, and empowerment.

Nonprofits Support The Merger

The list of local nonprofits partnered with First Step Food Bank includes agencies like Gateway to Hope Ministries, Shepherds Lighthouse in Belleview and Marion County Veterans Helping Veterans.

The Rev. James Giles, an Episcopalian priest and CEO of Gateway to Hope Ministries in northeast Ocala, was on hand for the press conference. His outreach touches at least 300 local families and about 120 guests have a hot meal on Thursdays at the ministry.

“We couldn’t survive without We pick up twice a week,” Giles said.

Yolanda East is executive director of Shepherd’s Lighthouse, an outreach with transitional housing for single mothers and their children and six one-bedroom, case-managed apartments.

East said First Step Food Bank has been wonderful and “vital” to the operation and “the difference between having and not having” food for the persons helped in the area by the outreach.

East praised Del Toro and the staff and said the merger should be an “awesome addition.”

East said she “believes in unity in the community” and people joining to help each other.

Gary Pascale, office manager at Marion County Veterans Helping Veterans, said the organization assists 70 to 100 veterans monthly with food , thanks to its partnership with First Step Food Bank.

He said the food banks warehouse staff does a fantasitic job of handling the food and helping out

“I dont know what we would do without them,” he said.

Our Statewide Network Of Food Banks Works To Feed 22 Million Hungry Floridians

Feeding Florida member food banks support more than 2,400 community-based partner agencies, which provide food directly to individuals and families in need to ensure a hunger-free Florida. Last year, the Feeding Florida network provided over 404 million pounds of food. Of that, over 30% million pounds was fresh fruits and vegetables. Feeding Florida is a unified voice regarding hunger and food access by focusing on each communitys needs.

Susan King: Local Food Bank Raises Funds And Awareness Of Hunger On The First Coast

At Feeding Northeast Florida we believe that no one should go hungry and work every day to make that a reality. We currently serve an estimated 85,000 people per day throughout our eight-county service area. And yet, more than 240,000 people in the Northeast Florida area experience hunger and food insecurity thats one in seven adults and one in five children.

The impact of those numbers cannot be overstated. During this extended period of high inflation, families and individuals are struggling even more with the ability to make their paychecks stretch and cover all their essential needs.

Nutritious food is usually among the first things to be cut from their budget. Choosing to pay record rising rents, an overdue electric bill, to make a necessary repair or fill a prescription take priority, causing people to go hungry.

Thats where we provide help at Feeding Northeast Florida, the regions largest nonprofit food bank, along with our more than 325 agency partners and programs.
