The Food Bank of South Jersey works with more than 200 partner agencies in Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Salem counties to provide food to those in need.     Feeding America is a nationwide network of 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs that provides food and services to people each year. Together, we are the nations largest domestic hunger-relief organization.     What Happens At A Drive

  • Drive up to the food pickup area. Food bank staff and volunteers will guide you through the line to help everyone get through as quickly and safely as possible.
  • Check-in. For safety, you will usually check in through your car window. This is when you may be asked about your family members, income, and special diets.
  • Food is put in your trunk. Pre-packed boxes or bags of food are loaded into your trunk. Make sure you have plenty of room. Staff or volunteers will load the food while you stay inside your car. Once you have your food, you can drive off.

    Many Mobile Food Pantry sites will allow you to pick up food as a proxy for another household that cannot physically attend. You will need to be prepared to provide the name, address and household size of any other family you are picking up for. Most Mobile Pantry sites have a limit on how many households you can pick up for and should tell you that limit if you ask.

    Who Can Visit A Drive

    Anyone who needs help with food and groceries can visit. Depending pm the pantry you visit, you may need to provide your zip code and the number of people in your family so the food pantry can keep track of how many people they helped. If you are sharing a ride with someone, you may need to show your ID to receive food for each family.

    Commodity Supplemental Food Program

    Are you 60 years or older and in need of food assistance? In partnership with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, FARSB implemented the Commodity Supplemental food program to address the increased demand for older adults in need of food assistance throughout the Inland Empire. Food recipients are guaranteed to receive nutritious, healthy and high quality food kits at no cost.

    What It’s Like To Volunteer At A Food Bank

    Every volunteer experience is a little different. Here are some things you might do as a volunteer:

    • Sort and pack food: You can keep the shelves stocked by assembling food boxes for distribution.
    • Assist at mobile pantries, drive-thru pantries, and no-contact distributions: Help your neighbors feed their families.
    • Deliver meals: With many communities sheltering in place, you can help ensure our most vulnerable neighbors have the food they need while staying safe.
    • Glean and garden: Volunteers collect food left in the fields after harvest or help tend the food bank or food pantry’s community garden.
    • Volunteer from home: Some food banks have moved their volunteer shifts online and are asking volunteers to help fundraise or spread awareness.

    Your safety is a top priority. The Feeding America network follows all Center for Disease Control and local guidelines for sanitation, hygiene, and social distancing to ensure staff and volunteers are safe. This may include masks, additional handwashing stations, gloves, reduced group sizes, and other safety precautions.

    How Feeding America Helps Pass Out Food Groceries And More

    Over 200 regional food banks are part of the nationwide network. So what Feeding America does is they provide items to those locations, and those centers then coordinate resources for their area. The regional locations partner with thousands of even more local sites, including faith based organizations, local pantries, churches, shelters, and soup kitchens, among others.

    People that need help in the form of free groceries, food items, or meals should therefore call on the local Feeding America food bank in their area for referrals. Or they can directly contact one of the pantries in their town or county.

    Mobile pantries are also located in many parts of the country near you. These are run by local charities and non-profits. Feeding America helps keep these centers supplied and coordinates operation so coverage is provided to more parts of the country. They allow regional food banks help a greater number of needy and low income families, and increase the number of people served in local communities. They focus on certain towns and communities, and find .

    The National Produce Program is another resource available. This will provide fresh fruits, vegetables, and other produce items to the needy. Examples of what may be offered includes onions, potatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, apples, corn on the cob, and oranges, among other items. Feeding America, working with its local partners, will ensure that these fresh and healthy items get to the needy in local communities.
