Nclfc Coordinates Food Response With Feeding America Food Banks
On behalf of Feeding the Carolinas and its member NC Feeding America Food Banks, we are grateful for the ways in which our community is coming together like never before to ensure every individual and family has the resources needed to supply their basic needs.
As the primary source for food for thousands of food assistance programs , we have seen a significant increase in the need for food assistance, amounting to an average 60% increase in demand.
The emergency food system is a critical component of our nations food supply. During this time of unprecedented uncertainty and change, food pantries are staying open and shifting their operations to continue the mission of nourishing their communities while keeping communities safe.
Our Feeding America Food Banks reach every county in North Carolina and need your help during these unprecedented times, shared Mike Darrow, Executive Director of Feeding the Carolinas. Whether by donating or volunteering, our food banks appreciate people joining us as we work hard to provide food for those impacted by this pandemic. Together we will weather this storm.
Here are some ways you can support your local Food Bank:
Commodity Supplemental Food Program
Are you 60 years or older and in need of food assistance? In partnership with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, FARSB implemented the Commodity Supplemental food program to address the increased demand for older adults in need of food assistance throughout the Inland Empire. Food recipients are guaranteed to receive nutritious, healthy and high quality food kits at no cost.
Food Banks Are Responding To Unprecedented Needs Due To Covid
In 2020, we provided 6.1 billion meals to our neighbors facing hunger, an increase of 44 percent over 2019. Feeding America is also the largest nationwide nonprofit partnering with the U.S. Department of Agriculture on the implementation of federal nutrition programs. USDA foods composed 2.4 billion meals to people in need through our network in 2020 alone. Additionally, our food banks work to provide summer meal sites, afterschool meals, senior meal programs, and to connect the people we serve with resources for which they are eligible. That includes running one of the countrys largest Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program enrollment assistance programs, by helping more than 300,000 people nationwide enroll in SNAP. However, we know that even when the pandemic ends, the economic turmoil for many of the families we serve will not end.
To achieve our vision of an America where no one is hungry, we must address the root causes of hunger and deepen our understanding of structural and systemic inequities that affect disproportionately impacted communities and people in need of assistance. Our 40 years of experience, broad national reach, and deep local presence thanks to the Feeding America network of food banks gives us an unmatched ability to assess these issues and respond with informed and innovative solutions.

Food banks in the U.S. are very diverse from small operations serving people spread out across large rural areas to very large facilities that store and distribute many millions of pounds of food each year, and everything in between.
A variety of factors impact how food banks work, from the size of the facility to the number of staff members. But, one thing all food banks have in common is that they rely on donors and volunteers to carry out their day-to-day operations. Watch this video to see how Feeding America works

And now, P& G and Feeding America® are coming together in a joint effort to support communities that have been and continue to be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
For many American families, quarantine has resulted in lost wages, difficulty accessing food and an increased reliance on food banks. Across the U.S., P& G is donating products for distribution through the Feeding America® network of 200 food banks. Donations include toilet paper, paper towels and personal care kits containing other everyday essential products and are given to families who need them most.
To help communities in need, Feeding America® has also launched a COVID-19 Response Fund. The donations go directly toward creating and distributing staged food boxes in the most vulnerable parts of the country, as well as providing emergency funding to food banks to meet the changing needs of the communities they serve.
