East Texas Food Bank Dream Center Partner With Door Dash To Deliver Groceries To Seniors In Longview

LONGVIEW, Texas – A new partnership will help bring free food to those in need. The East Texas Food Bank has teamed with Longviews Dream Center to make grocery deliveries available to more senior citizens. And, it will get where it needs to go thanks to Door Dash.

Door Dash Driver Alyssa Stewart, Executive Director of the Longview Dream Center Shonna Barlow, and East Texas Food Bank Programs Director Blake Huguenin are about to load up boxes of free grocery items for delivery.

The East Texas Food works with 54 organizations across East Texas to deliver about 4000 boxes of food to seniors every month. So, Longview Dream Center is one of our partners. Basically, we had the idea of a lot of seniors either getting to a location to pick up their food, or they have to rely on somebody else to get them there, Huguenin said.

Thats where Door Dash comes in.

This is the first time an order like this popped up. I got one, I declined it. I got another one, I was like, Im curious on what this is about because Ive never seen one like this, so I came. And, Im glad I did because now I get to help the community, Stewart said.

Grocery delivery to places like Page Place Low Income Apartments isnt new, but until now it lacked efficiency.

One box was taken right to Linda Henrys door.

Thisll be a great partnership between the Food Bank, Door Dash and our partner agencies throughout East Texas, Huguenin said.

Retail Store Pickup Program

The Retail Store Donation Program is a strategic initiative that enables the Southeast Texas Food Bank to increase our emergency food distribution by collecting food from participating grocers that would otherwise be thrown away. Because of strict guidelines, stores often need to discard items even though they are nutritious and completely safe to eat. These goods are then distributed to our agencies in our eight-county wide service area. The Southeast Texas Food Bank works with participating stores to procure these otherwise expensive and difficult to obtain items such as meat, dairy, produce and baked goods enabling low-income residents throughout Southeast Texas to prepare well-balanced nutritious meals for themselves and their families. The program also exemplifies green business practices by redistributing fresh products that would unnecessarily become waste. Approximately one million pounds of high quality, nutritious food that might otherwise be discarded is rescued each year and delivered to where its needed most. The Southeast Texas Food Bank follows all necessary food safety guidelines, transports product via our fleet of refrigerated trucks and inspects donated product at pick-up and distribution points.

City Of Nacogdoches Celebrates Texas Arbor Day In Pioneer Park

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Friday is Texas Arbor Day, which falls on the first Friday in November. Across the state people use the day to plant trees.

The Garden Capital of Texas committee, in partnership with the City of Nacogdoches and Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful, spent the day planting trees at a park. Volunteer Dawn Stover calls it a tradition.

In the last at least decade or so weve been planting trees on Texas Arbor Day throughout the city, and this year weve chosen to kind of plant some trees throughout Pioneer Park. Its a park we havent gotten to touch yet, Stover said.

They explain the park has two areas. One is wet while the other is a more upland, dryer area which helps determine what kind of trees to plant in each area.

We wanted to choose things, one that would provide shade, that also might provide color and that would also do well in the situations that we chose for them, Stover said.

Angela Wiederhold, President of the Garden Capital of Texas committee, says the trees planted are local to the area.

Weve made a concerted effort to plant native trees, so again they arent high maintenance, theyre used to growing in Texas and they are very easy to maintain for the city, Wiederhold said.

Stover says this event is important for several reasons.

Along with the tree planting, there was also a dedication of a new interactive trail for kids.

Fresh Produce Program

East Texas Food Banks Fresh Produce Program provides a reliable source of fresh fruits and vegetables to our partner agency network, and the low-income clients they serve. ETFB collects produce from a variety of sources. The majority is donated from growers in the Rio Grande Valley in south Texas, along with several other locations, who agree to donate their abundance to food banks. In addition to produce sourced directly from growers, ETFB also receives large quantities of donated produce from retail distribution centers, and through our highly successful Retail Store Donation Program, which collects donated food from 57 retail stores across East Texas. Since the Fresh Produce Program is part of ETFBs core work of distributing food to partner agencies, it impacts virtually all the low-income clients they serve. East Texas Food Bank To Offer New Mobile Pantry In Frankston

“Anderson County has a great need for food assistance as 13.9% of the residents are food insecure or 8,060 people according to the latest data from Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap,” said Dennis Cullinane, CEO of the East Texas Food Bank. “Studies show a direct link to good nutrition and health outcomes so the ability to offer more vegetables and fruits will greatly benefit the residents.”

The East Texas Food Bank currently has seven partner agencies that operate food pantries in Frankston, Elkhart and Palestine.

There are also special programs to help seniors with a monthly box of food and children receive backpacks of food through their school.

Lufkin, TX: The T.L.L. Temple Foundation recently awarded a $4,036,882grant to the East Texas Food Bank , payable over four years. Food Bank Begins Summer Program

TYLER The East Texas Food Bank has kicked off the Summer Food Program at 27 East Texas locations so children will not go hungry during the summer break.

The Summer Food Program began in 2005 to fill the meal gap left when the school year ends and children lose access to free and reduced-price meals they depend on for nourishment, said Dennis Cullinane, East Texas Food Bank CEO.

In 2021, the East Texas Food Bank served 28,811 meals to children. This year we believe the need will be greater with the rising costs of food and are preparing to serve 50,000 meals across East Texas, added Cullinane.

The meals are provided at various community sites Monday-Friday. There is no need to register and no proof of age or income required. Some locations offer breakfast and lunch but all offer lunch.

In Houston County, the locations are found at: Crockett Early Childhood Center, located at 1300 MLK Blvd. and Crockett Elementary School, which is located at 1400 SW Loop 304 in Crockett.

East Texas Food Bank Summer Food Program Aids Families Amid Inflation

TYLER, Texas – Schools across East Texas are wrapping up, and for families who financially rely on free school meals, budgeting can become a challenge. Inflation has only made feeding families harder.

East Texas Food Bank will aid families amidst inflation with the annual East Texas Food Bank Summer Food Program.

The Summer Food Program fills the gap that children have when they do not have access to school meals.

Families that have children that are eligible for free and reduced lunches really rely on that for their budgets in order to fill their kids stomachs, CEO Dennis Cullinane said.

Students can go to one of the sites and get breakfast and lunch for free.

There in locations where we know that the children are economically challenged and under-resourced, Cullinane said.

Cullinane said the program is critical this year because of inflation.

In March, East Texas Food Bank saw the highest number of households served through pantries. March is also most schools spring break, when families do not have the option of free school meals.

That indicates that families are under a lot of pressure and theres been a lot of inflation with the grocery prices, Cullinane said.

According to the USDA, the food-at-home consumer price index increased 1.3 percent from March 2022 to April 2022 and is up 10.8 percent from last April.

At a time when prices go up and families need the food bank most, Cullinane said that donations slow.

Senior Food Box Program

The USDA sponsored Commodity Supplemental Food Program is oriented towards providing free monthly boxes of food to seniors who are 60 and older and who economically qualify for the program by having an income level that is 130 percent or less of the poverty level for their household size.
