What Is The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank

The Greater Baton Rouge Food Banks mission is, to feed the hungry in Baton Rouge and the surrounding parishes by providing food and educational outreach through faith-based and other community partners. This organization works with over 115 different organizations to distribute food to those who need it in 11 parishes, including East Baton Rouge Parish.

Saint Paul Catholic Church

The available resources comprise a variety of food items such as Peanut Butte, bread, spaghetti, pantry staples, canned veggies, and tomato sauce, among other things. Volunteer With The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank

We couldnt do what we do without so many of our wonderful volunteers. Put simply, WE NEED YOU!

On a daily basis, our volunteers work in our warehouse sorting food donations and assembling food boxes that will be distributed to the community. Last year, we distributed over 9 million meals in our 11-parish service area. This year, our goal is to distribute 11 million meals. You can easily sign up to volunteer by going to our Volunteer Registration page.

Volunteers can help sort and package food, as well as help with upcoming events like mobile pantries, conventions, and various others.

Our warehouse is open Monday-Friday 8 am to 4 pm and Saturdays 8 am to Noon. Volunteers must wear closed-toed shoes when coming to volunteer their time with us.

Office Of Social Services For Baton Rouge

People who need assistance applying for SNAP food stamps, government commodities, or any other type of public assistance can get it from the Office of Social Services for Baton Rouge. This building houses the governments center for low-income families. Additionally, cash assistance is provided.

The non-profit also helps people apply for other benefits that can be used in a crisis, such as energy bill assistance from EEAP, LIHEAP, or weatherization. The location also offers referrals to programs for water bills and rent.

Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.

What We Aim To Solve

The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank works to address the problem of food insecurity in the 11-parish great Baton Rouge area. Food insecurity is defined as the lack of access to enough food or consistent access to enough food for a healthy lifestyle. Many of the clients we serve do not know from where their next meal will come or even if a meal will come at all. Hunger and the lack of enough food impacts children, seniors, and individuals.The mission of the Food Bank is to provide food for our clients so that children can focus in school and seniors do not have to choose between buying food or paying for medications.In times of disaster, the Food Bank is there for everyone who needs help, even if just until they are back on their feet following the disaster.

The East Baton Rouge Council On Aging And The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank Partner To Open A Senior Food Pantry

Baton Rouge, LA April 5, 2018 The East Baton Rouge Council on Aging announced today that it will be opening a new senior focused food pantry, which will combat senior hunger in East Baton Rouge Parish. This partnership with the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, the USDA and LA Department of Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain will establish one of the largest Senior Food Pantries in Baton Rouge.

Through this collaborative effort seniors 60+ will now have an opportunity to receive Food Bank items consisting of fresh fruit, produce, baked goods, USDA items and miscellaneous items (toiletries, personal/hygiene items, incontinent supplies and household items. This Senior Food Pantry represents an ongoing effort from the East Baton Rouge Council on Aging to increase senior access to fresh fruits and vegetables while attempting to decrease senior hunger and combating food deserts in our community.

The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank is glad to join with the EBRCOA to help us better address the increasing issue of senior hunger in East Baton Rouge Parish, said Mike Manning, Food Bank President and CEO.

The East Baton Rouge Council on Aging is a non-profit organization serving the senior population of East Baton Rouge Parish. Annually, our agency delivers 375,240 meals through our Meals on Wheels program and over 140,000 meals to seniors through our senior centers and meal sites.

Meals, baby formula, and a great deal more are some of the services provided by the North Baton Rouge Community Center. There are also individualized case management services, employment assistance, and training for people who need help.
