What The World Food Programme Is Doing To Respond To The Yemen Emergency

Houston Food Bank donations increase in wake of visits from President, First Lady, AOC
Food assistance
In 2022, WFP aims to provide nearly 13 million people with emergency food assistance as in-kind rations of flour, pulses, oil, sugar, salt, or voucher or cash to purchase the same quantity of food.
Cash assistance
WFP is expanding cash assistance in areas of Yemen where markets are stable enough to provide for communities basic food needs. To support this programme WFP is registering beneficiaries on a new biometric platform. Through this system, people receive cash equal to the value of the food basket provided to families, which will inject much-needed liquidity into the economy. Much higher food prices in the south versus the north of Yemen means the cash amount is different.
Nutrition assistance
In response to high acute, moderate and severe malnutrition rates among children and women, WFP targets to provide nutritional support to 2.5 million pregnant and nursing women and children in 2022.
School feeding
WFP aims to provide daily nutritious snacks either date bars or high energy biscuits to 2.4 million school children in 2022. The programme focuses on areas that have been hard hit by conflict, leading to low levels of school attendance and poor food security.
Logistics
The WFP-managed UN Humanitarian Air Service continues to transport humanitarian aid workers between Sanaa, Djibouti and Amman. In addition, the Logistics Cluster facilitates a weekly sea transport shuttle for humanitarian workers between Aden and Djibouti.

MFE Food is Love

1 min read | june 16, 2022

The Houston Food Bank, an institution serving the Houston area since 1982, is expanding and Chevron is giving them the space to grow.

The organizations mission to provide families nutritious meals has never been more important, tested or proven. Through the COVID-19 pandemic, a winter freeze, significant inflation and more, the facility has remained steadfast in its commitment to the city.

When we learned the Houston Food Bank was interested in acquiring land for a new food distribution center, Chevron met with them to hear more about their vision, which culminated in a 53-acre donation.

Valued at approximately $10 million, the parcel of land will help the food bank provide new services, recruit more volunteers and distribute food more equitably. The new facility is scheduled to open in 2025.

What Items Do Food Banks Need Most

Food banks mostly need long-life products that have extended use-by dates or non-perishables such as canned vegetables and fish, biscuits, and sugar for example.

Canned foods are often the first thing people think to donate. This is because when considering ‘how long does canned food last ?’, the answer is it has a long shelf life and can even be eaten beyond its expiration date if the can isn’t damaged in any way.

However, other store cupboard essentials like stock cubes, condiments and spices, and jarred sauces are also welcome.

How To Donate To A Food Bank

With the pandemic and the cost of living crisis, food banks are being relied upon more than ever before. If you’re wondering how to help, here’s everything you need to know about food bank donations.

Food banks work with support from the public, who donate non-perishable food at a range of places such as schools, churches, and local businesses, as well as supermarket collection points. Then volunteers sort the produce into emergency food parcels to give to people in need. A large majority of food banks also provide extra services alongside the emergency food parcels, such as toiletries, sanitary products, and baby basics.

According to recent stats published by The Trussel Trust , 95% of people referred to food banks in early 2020 were unable to afford to eat or stay warm and dry. As well as 18% of households referred to food banks were single parents – more than twice the rate in the general population. Trussel Trust added “We know that extremely low income is a key factor driving people to food banks.” Therefore donating to a food bank is needed now more than ever.

Annual Fundraiser Helps Houston Food Bank Provide Hunger Relief To Families Facing Food Insecurity

For the seventh consecutive year, Whataburger and the Houston Texans are teaming up to raise money for the Houston Food Bank in the fight against hunger. The partnership will help provide support for local school programs, as many households continue to struggle with food insecurity.

From Monday, Sept. 19 at 3 p.m. through Monday, Oct. 10 at 3 p.m., guests who visit any of the 147 Whataburger locations across Houston and donate $1 to benefit the Houston Food Bank, will receive a thank-you coupon for a free Whataburger with the purchase of a medium fry and 32-ounce drink.

With the continued need throughout the community, our distribution continues to be at elevated levels. One in five children in Houston lives in a food-insecure household, says Houston Food Bank President/CEO Brian Greene. Children face greater health risks and can struggle in school without proper nutrition. Were grateful to have Whataburger and the Houston Texans on our team again, to help keep our communitys children nourished and on the path to bright futures.

The three-week fundraiser will begin with a special kick off event on Tuesday, Sept. 20 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the Whataburger located at7411 Southwest Fwy, Houston, Texas 77074. Officials from Whataburger, the Houston Texans and the Houston Food Bank along with Texans Legend Travis Johnson, TORO and Texans Cheerleaders will be in attendance.

What Donations Does The Food Bank Need

The food bank accepts many kinds of donations, including volunteers, money and food itself.

In fact, it is in desperate need of all of of these things.

COVID-19 eroded the food banks army of 85,000 volunteers, many of whom have yet to return. Meanwhile, service demands remain about 25 percent higher than before COVID as Texans continue to rely on charity to combat skyrocketing inflation that has pushed national food prices up by more than 9 percent over the last two years.

Anyone older than 6 can volunteer at the food bank, and the organization is perhaps most in need of this kind of help.

But thats not the only way to aid. People can also donate money online or by contacting the development department, 713-547-8623.

For each $1 that is donated, the bank can provide as many as three meals because of its partnerships with manufacturers and distributors.

Finally, residents can donate non-perishable food items in red barrels at their local grocery store. Frozen food, however, is not accepted from the public.

Visitors find many items at the food bank useful, but have been especially grateful for fresh produce, officials said.

All The Tools Purpose

Unify corporate social responsibility , carbon accounting and emissions reduction, sustainability reporting, social impact measurement, ESG disclosure, and more with a beautiful, integrated, and audit-ready platform for inspiring and measuring positive change. Whether you’re a large corporation, growing business, government, university, or other purpose-led organization, Brightest gives you the most flexible, comprehensive governance platform for data-driven social impact, environmental compliance, value chain and stakeholder engagement, and reporting success and outcomes

What Our Clients Say

We needed a platform to make sales online and to track and display ads for our sponsors. GiveSmart was perfect. We ended up making close to $15,000 more than we had hoped for. Definite better ROI than we anticipated. The interface is easy to use and provides plenty of options to get help if needed.

Michelle M.

Using GS has created ease in auction bookkeeping, payments, and generating post-event thank you/tax letters. While we were online during COVID, our interactions with our GiveSmart via phone, email, and zoom were seamless. A representative always got back to us within the day. I would recommend GiveSmart to anyone doing a large online event.

GiveSmart is highly flexible – you can use it for simple registration and check-in, to full-scale galas with complex order forms, onsite upsells, live auctions, seating management, and more.

Jamie F.

GiveSmart is easy to use and ideal for virtual events and can be used for in-person events to manage the silent auction, seating charts, and check-in to the event. Being able to use the platform for unlimited events within the contract year is very useful and being able to add other users and volunteers for different levels of access is helpful as well.
