How To Help Homeless People

Arkansas shelters seeking donations ahead of winter

Healthy food can help the homeless combat the nutritional and caloric deficiencies they frequently experience. Ensure that food is not expired and offers a healthy, balanced meal. Non-perishable Items such as cereal, baby food, and canned goods are best. Avoid sugary and high-salt foods, and ensure that any food you donate has not been recalled, is not in a damaged container that could let in disease and has been thoroughly cleaned. While fresh fruits and vegetables might seem like good options, few organizations accept these perishable foods. Instead, donating canned fruits and vegetables. Donated food should not require refrigeration or freezing unless you are donating to an organization such as a soup kitchen that prepares and serves foods.

Handing Out Care Packages

There are a lot of ways to hand out care packages for homeless individuals. The easiest way is to give it to a random homeless person you meet on the street.

If you can convince a couple of friends to make their own homeless care kits, then all the better. You can group them together and go to homeless shelters or local public parks that the homeless frequent. If youre not comfortable approaching a random homeless person, you can also partner with a local homeless charity. Theyre usually swamped with homeless people asking for basic necessities so those care kits would be very much welcome.

If youre personally giving out the care kits, just remember to ask them first if they want help. Some homeless individuals dont readily accept help from anyone, either because of pride or lack of trust in strangers. I mean, if youre on the streets for days, youve probably seen enough to convince you not to accept anything handed out by a complete stranger. So if some of them refuse to accept what youre giving, dont be offended. There are a lot of homeless whod be more than willing to accept those care packages.

That said, handing out care packages is one of the best things you can do for the homeless. Sometimes, it only takes a single act of kindness to make someones day. And at the end of the day, a little bit of kindness is all this world really needs.

St Lukes Hospital Alone Has Donated Approximately 260 Gallons Of Soup Enough For More Than 4160 Servings

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. Southcoast Health announced today that it is partnering with the United Way of Greater New Bedfords Hunger Commission to provide leftover food to the homeless and less fortunate across eastern Massachusetts.

Southcoast Health is freezing its leftover non-dairy-based soups, which are picked up weekly and brought to local soup kitchens and shelters by the Hunger Commission. All three of Southcoast Healths acute-care hospitals St. Lukes Hospital in New Bedford, Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, and Tobey Hospital in Wareham are participating in the initiative.

Being able to deliver the soup donated by the three hospitals has given the pantries and their clients something different to look forward to each week, said Michelle N. Hantman, President & CEO of United Way of Greater New Bedford. It has allowed the Hunger Commission to increase the capacity in which we serve residents of the South Coast and will hopefully encourage others to follow Southcoast Healths lead and donate their extra food to those in need.

Since the projects inception in April, St. Lukes Hospital alone has donated approximately 260 gallons of soup, enough for more than 4,160 servings .

Almost 40 percent of food in the United States today goes uneaten, according to Feeding America, a non-profit network of over 200 food banks in the U.S. By one estimate, that equates to more than 20 pounds of food per person every month.

Limited Liability Protection For Donors

The Act exempts persons and gleaners who make good faith donations of food to nonprofit organizations that feed the hungry from liability for injuries arising from the consumption of the donated food.

Under the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act, the following food donation standards apply:

Persons and gleaners : Persons and gleaners, including qualified direct donors, shall not be subject to civil or criminal liability arising from the nature, age, packaging, or condition of apparently wholesome food that the person or gleaner donates in good faith to a nonprofit organization for ultimate distribution to needy individuals.

Donations of apparently wholesome food by qualified direct donors must be made in compliance with applicable state and local health, food safety, and food handling laws .

Donating Food To Charity

If you want to donate food to charity, one of the best ways is to donate to your local food bank. You can usually find a box for charity food donations near the check-outs in your local supermarket, along with a list of what the food bank needs most that week.

Some homeless shelters also accept donations of food from the public. If youre thinking about donating food to a homeless shelter the best thing is to contact them and ask them what they need. There are usually restrictions on what they can accept , but they might also need other things rather than food.

To find your local homeless centres, you can use a website like homeless link, or contact your local council.

Donations For The Homeless That Just Make Sense

How to Donate Food to Homeless Shelters

Donating to a homeless charity is always a good idea. And considering that most of them are run by non-profit organizations, they really do need those donations.

But while every donation will surely be appreciated, some people tend to bring in items that just dont make sense. For example, there are people asking if they can donate old furniture to a homeless charity. Some places may accept them but in general, they just dont belong at a homeless charity. Aside from the lack of storage space, its not really an immediate need for the homeless.

So if youre wondering what homeless charity donations to make, here are some things that they really need the most:

The poor economy, high utility and gas prices and lack of affordable housing prevent many working parents from being able to provide nourishing food for their families.

    Socks And Other Footcare Items

In 2017, a group of formerly homeless individuals shared what helped them the most in a Reddit thread. The most common items were socks and other foot care items. These include things like antifungal cream and bandages.

Many homeless individuals stand or walk throughout the day. Their feet hurt and they wear through socks quickly. Many homeless people wear old shoes, ill-fitting shoes, or no shoes at all, leaving their feet vulnerable and in pain. On top of that, wet socks or thin socks feel miserable when it is cold or raining. Having a few different pairs of socks can make a world of difference.

How to help:Stop by the sock aisle whenever you are at Target or Walmart. Add a six-pack of socks to your cart and donate the packs at the end of each month or every other month.
