HOPEs Food Pantry is one of the largest in Westchester County. HOPEs Soup Kitchen serves about 100 meals each week night where every guest is warmly welcomed. Our wonderful team of committed staff and enthusiastic volunteers take great pride in helping to support our neighbors.
In addition to our many food services, we provide housing services, childrens after-school and summer programming, and community programming, as well as distributions of books, clothes, hats, scarves and gloves, shoes and socks, backpacks and school supplies and toys, and so much more.

How Many Community Service Hours Do You Need For High School
Students are required to complete 100 hours of volunteer community service to graduate. The specific community service projects are established by the local education agency. Districts may award up to one-half elective credit for student completion of nonpaid voluntary community or school service work.
Anyone Can Be A Food Donor
Anyone can donate food, including farmers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, restaurants, cafeterias, hotels, cruise ships, and households, just to name a few.
- EPAs Excess Food Opportunities Map is an interactive tool that displays the locations of nearly 1.2 million potential industrial, commercial and institutional excess food generators and more than 4,000 potential recipients of excess food including anaerobic digestion facilities, composting facilities, and food banks.
- Gleaning is the collection of excess fresh foods from farms, gardens, farmers markets, and other sources to provide it to those in need. Leadership Volunteer Assignments Require Experience An On
Regular shift assignments, some training and annual refresher training, and a monthly Team Leader meeting are required. These volunteers are peer leaders for every task at the Foodbank their involvement and on-going commitment make eliminating hunger a possibility in our community. If you are interested in becoming a Team Leader, start with Basic or Regular Assignment volunteering and contact the Volunteer Coordinator, Stephanie Cuffee at to express your interest.
Volunteer Team LeaderThese volunteers have logged hundreds of hours as basic and regular volunteers, completed training in task and group management, and commit to regular monthly meetings and leadership shifts. Team Leaders supervise evening and weekend warehouse work, special events and some warehouse functions.
Advisory CouncilThe volunteer advisory council meets regularly to examine trends in volunteerism and foodbanking and how each impacts our volunteer department. This volunteer/staff collaborative group sets procedure and provides oversight for the volunteer functions at the Foodbank. Additionally, each program area at the Foodbank has its own advisory council partnership.
During our COVID-19 response, all volunteers must be at least 16years old. We strongly discourage older adults and people of any age with serious underlying medical conditions who might be at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
Limited Liability Protection For Donors
The Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act of 1996 encourages the donation of food and grocery products to nonprofit organizations for distribution to needy individuals. The Act exempts persons and gleaners who make good faith donations of food to nonprofit organizations that feed the hungry from liability for injuries arising from the consumption of the donated food.
Under the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act, the following food donation standards apply:
Persons and gleaners : Persons and gleaners, including qualified direct donors, shall not be subject to civil or criminal liability arising from the nature, age, packaging, or condition of apparently wholesome food that the person or gleaner donates in good faith to a nonprofit organization for ultimate distribution to needy individuals.
Nonprofit organizations: Nonprofit organizations shall not be subject to civil or criminal liability arising from the nature, age, packaging, or condition of apparently wholesome food that the nonprofit organization received as a donation in good faith from a person or gleaner, including a qualified direct donor, for ultimate distribution to needy individuals.
Donations of apparently wholesome food by qualified direct donors must be made in compliance with applicable state and local health, food safety, and food handling laws .

Food Banks Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program has put more than $1 billion back into the pockets of low-income New Yorkers, and we rely on over 300 dedicated volunteers each tax season to support this impactful anti-poverty work.

Donating Instead Of Completing Hours For Tcap
You may be able to donate funds in lieu of completing hours. To do this, you must be in compliance with the terms of your probation and your Probation Officer must initiate a referral for you to become eligible. Please talk to your Probation Officer for eligibility.
If you have been approved by your Probation Officer, you may donate online at www.centraltexasfoodbank.org/TCAP. Donations are not refundable.
We report donations on a weekly basis to TCAP, so there will be a delay from when you complete a donation to when your Probation Officer sees it.
Your First Tcap Volunteer Shift
On your first day volunteering at the Food Bank:
- Bring your CSR Placement Agreement form provided by your Probation Officer. This form states your offense, Cause Number, and that you have been assigned to complete hours with the Central Texas Food Bank.
- Bring a government-issued photo ID
Tell the Volunteer Engagement staff member at the check-in desk that you are here for your first day of TCAP volunteer service. We will verify that you are eligible to volunteer and ensure your account is correctly configured so that your hours are reported to TCAP. If you do not verify your registration, your volunteer hours may not be reported to TCAP.

Court Ordered & Probation
WHAT IS THE FOOD BANKS POLICY ON VOLUNTEERS WHO ARE ASSIGNED COURT ORDERED COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS?
Individuals who receive a court order to perform community service will be accepted on a case by case basis. Individuals convicted of certain serious offenses will not be accepted to volunteer due to potential safety risks for other volunteers and staff.
CAN I DONATE FOOD OR MONEY IN LIEU OF COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS?
We do accept monetary donations in lieu of community service hours however, there must be pre-approval of the court, private attorney or probation services. We do NOT accept food donations in lieu of community service hours.
WHAT PAYMENT METHODS DO YOU ACCEPT FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS?
We accept cash or money orders for community service payments. Credit/debit cards may only be used with court/PO approval. We do NOT accept checks. Cash will need to be brought in the exact amount owed . We have a no refund policy.
HOW MUCH MONEY DO I NEED TO DONATE FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE HOUR?
If the court, probation office, or attorney has not assigned a monetary value to each community service hour the San Antonio Food Bank will use an exchange rate of community service hour equals $ dollars.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME WHEN I MAKE A DONATION?
The individual should bring the client referral form that reflects name, case/SID#, probation officers name and the approved amount per hour. *Note* if no dollar amount is noted on referral, the rate per house will be $8 per hour.

Basic Volunteer Assignments Are One
Most groups and individuals coming to the Foodbank to volunteer are in this category.
Mobile Pantry ProgramMobile Pantry volunteers help distribute food in underserved neighborhoods by assisting with unloading the mobile pantry truck and distributing pre-packaged bags of food. This task is done under the supervision of a staff person or a trained Volunteer Team Leader. During our response to COVID-19 all volunteers must be at least 18 years old. We strongly discourage older adults and people of any age with serious underlying medical conditions who might be at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
Quality Assurance
Quality Assurance volunteers work in the warehouse and, during our response to COVID-19, must be at least 18 years old. We strongly discourage older adults and people of any age with serious underlying medical conditions who might be at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19. Groups and individuals assigned to Quality Assurance will work on one or more of these tasks, depending on current needs: sorting non-perishable food items, packing food for the mobile pantry, preparing youth-friendly food bags for the Backpack Program, repacking bulk food, sanitation and cleanliness of the warehouse.

Ongoing Volunteer Assignments Are Volunteer Opportunities Which Can Be Weekly Monthly Annually Or Even Daily
These assignments generally need some specialized skill or training and require a regular commitment to performing the tasks. Contact us to arrange for an interview if you are interested in these regular on-going volunteer opportunities. Once trained, volunteers will have online access to regular volunteer events/assignments.
Child Nutrition Backpack Program DeliveryThis is an ongoing bi-weekly volunteer shift to deliver bags of food to local schools. Requires repeated lifting of 40-50 containers during 4 hour delivery shift will utilize Foodbank truck deliveries must be made during regular school hours volunteers must have valid drivers license in-good-standing.
Non-CDL Truck DriverThis is an ongoing daily, weekly, or bi-weekly volunteer shift to pick up corporate food donations, and/or deliver bags of food to local schools. May require repeated lifting of 40-50 pound containers during the shift could utilize Foodbank truck or your own vehicle if delivering backpacks, deliveries must be made during regular school hours volunteers must have valid drivers license in-good-standing.
Receptionist/Switchboard AssistantAnswer phones, help visitors with food donation deliveries, operate 5 phone line communication system. This volunteer will have proper skills and ability to provide superior customer service to all callers and visitors.

We Are Always Adapting Our Policies And Set
- Masks As of March 1st, 2022, masks are no longer required at MFB. While not required, we strongly recommend that volunteers still wear masks if they are not fully vaccinated, are at high risk due to a health condition, or are still concerned about COVID risks and fee more comfortable wearing a mask. COVID remains unpredictable, and if another spike in infections happens in the future, we may require masks again. Please check back here and in your event description on VolunteerHub frequently.
- Social Distancing Volunteers are not required to maintain six feet from one another. We ask that you provide other volunteers the space they need in order to be comfortable
- Hygiene We are regularly cleaning all high contact surfaces
Join A Virtual Service Event
Food Bank hosts largescale Virtual Service Hours on Zoom, bringing together volunteers from across the country to join in impactful virtual service activities. These events pair virtual service with educational panel conversations on food insecurity topics with guest speakers.
Recent virtual events have included our Virtual Day of Service for MLK Day with guest speaker Reverend Rasheed Baird, and People Get Periods: A Virtual Service Hour and Conversation on Period Poverty with US Congresswoman Grace Meng.

After a nearly two year pause of in-person volunteering due to COVID-19, we are thrilled to welcome volunteers back at our Community Kitchen & Pantry in West Harlem and our Warehouse & Distribution Center in the Bronx!
As always, the safety of our volunteers, staff, and those we proudly serve is paramount. All volunteers must agree to our COVID-19 Waiver in order to participate in-person. All volunteers must also show proof of vaccination against COVID-19 and wear a mask that properly covers the nose and mouth at all in-person volunteer events.
