Does Dog Food Go Bad After Opening
Your pets bowl should be emptied of moist or canned food not eaten by your cat or dog within 4 hours if the ambient temperature is above 50°F. Opened cans should be stored in the fridge, at temperatures between 40-45°F, for a maximum of 5-7 days. Any cat or dog food remaining after that time should be thrown out.

Litter And Litter Boxes
All that poops gotta go somewhere. Shelter cats can especially benefit from litter and litter boxes as they learn to go potty where it is appropriate to do so, and that helps them have a better chance of getting adopted.
Animal shelters often ask for litter boxes, extra litter, and disposable aluminum trays. Make sure the litter boxes are in good shape, preferably new, and have no broken parts.

Stocking Orange County Food Pantries With Pet Supplies
OC Animal Allies No Empty Bowls program helps people in our community who need time to get back on their feet while preventing their pet from going hungry or being relinquished to a shelter due to lack of resources. We acquire, store, and donate pet food and pet care items to local organizations feeding our low-income community.
Many people in our community simply need a helping paw with feeding their animals for a few weeks as they get back on their feet after losing a job, the death of a family member or recovering from an illness. With help from the community, we aim to prevent pets from going hungry or ending up at a shelter because their owner has fallen on hard times.
Our distribution partners pick up donated food and other available supplies from our warehouse to distribute it at their food pantries. Since homeless pet owners typically cannot carry large supplies of food, the agencies volunteers will bag one weeks worth of food to distribute to them.
What Do You Need For An Animal Shelter
Office supplies are often needed for those tasks. Pens, folders, notebooks, electronics, and batteries are among the items used in the offices of animal shelters. Some shelters also have youth or community outreach programs that do arts and crafts, and they can use supplies like glue, markers, construction paper, and more.

Sheets Blankets Or Towels
Bedding material is very needed in shelter settings, and shelter cats go through this stuff pretty fast. Accidents, chewing, clawing, and general use make these items hard to keep in stock.
Shelters tend to accept sheets, blankets, and towels regardless of whether they are new or used, so long as they are clean and arent completely falling apart, though not all do. Ask your local shelter if they accept these items.

Police Department Allows Parking Tickets To Be Paid By Cat Food Donations To Shelter

Muncie Animal Care & Services is an animal shelter based in Indiana. For years, they have provided animal adoption and animal control services.
Recently, the shelter is facing a slight dilemma. Currently, they already have 350 cats and kittens housed at the shelter. However, more strays are still being brought in.
The need to supply enough food and supplies for all the animals increases as there is an inflow of them. Thankfully, the Muncie Police Department made the decision to assist.
They tweeted their brilliant idea on July 15. The police force began allowing those who had unpaid parking citations to make cat food donations to the shelter rather than paying the fine in cash.
Currently, the shelters primary need is cat food, but people with unpaid tickets can also opt to donate cat litter or paper towels. Also, the shelter cats needed beds and blankets to sleep comfortably.
To properly pay off their fines, the donation should amount to the unpaid ticket fee. At the time, those with parking tickets could either drop off their donations at the shelter or arrange for the local police to pick up the donation.
Fortunately, all parties involved were happy to support the initiative, and officials immediately agreed to help the shelter. The cat donation campaign only lasted a few days, but it was successful.

Things You Can Donate To Animal Shelters That You Probably Already Have
There are lots of reasons you might have extra supplies and items around the house that animal shelters might need. Right now is as good a time as any to do some cleaning and do a good deed at the same time.
It takes a lot to provide for all the animals in a shelters care, and as you can imagine, shelters go through supplies very quickly. They could use all the help they can get. Take some time to do inventory around your house and see if you have anything youre ready to get rid of that a shelter might use.
It wont cost you anything to donate the items that youre getting rid of anyway, youll have a cleaner and more organized living space, and youll be helping cats as they wait for their forever homes.
You should, however, always call ahead to find out what your local animal shelter needs before you arrive with your items for donation, as shelters vary in what they can and cannot accept. Here are eight items you probably already have around your house that you can donate to an animal shelter in need.
The 8 Best Things To Donate To Your Local Cat Shelter
Shelters around the country rescue thousands of cats every day from dangerous and often life-threatening situations. Many shelters are run entirely by volunteers and depend on their communities for labor, money, and supplies to continue their work.
Since each shelter will inherently have its own unique set of needs and requirements, its best to touch base with them before gathering supplies to donate. Your shelter, for instance, may have a dependable source of cat food but may be desperate for litter. Having that information can help you determine the best way to help.
Here are eight ideas to get you started.

1. MoneyEven though shelters are generally run by non-paid volunteers, they need money to function and properly care for the cats they take in. Monetary donations will be used for generally shelter upkeep , direct cat care , and other needs as they arise.
If youd like to donate money to your local shelter but dont have the funds to do it out of your own pocket, consider organizing a fundraiser or getting involved with a fundraiser your shelter is already planning.

2. Your timeYour time can be donated to your local shelter in a number of ways. The most obvious way to volunteer your time is to work in the shelter itself. Shelters often count on volunteers to clean, feed cats, scoop litter boxes, groom, and transport cats to and from veterinarian appointments and adoption events.

Organization And Cleaning Supplies
As you can imagine, there are plenty of potty accidents to clean up around the shelter, as well as everyday messes that happen when you have a lot of animals together in one place.
Paper towels, garbage bags, rubber gloves, spray bottles, storage bins, and Ziplock bags are among the items that help animal shelters stay clean and organized.
Some shelters will also take rolls of newspaper, so long as any glossy ads are removed for safety.
Enabling People And Pets Together To Serve More Clients

For People and Pets Together in South Minneapolis, the demand for pet food has never been higher. Every week the nonprofit pet food bank serves hundreds of limited-income pet owners in the neighborhood. Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, program director Nick Atwood has seen a rise in need due to layoffs and furloughs. “Our clients would use every last dollar to feed their dogs and cats instead of themselves. The donation from GreaterGood.org’s Rescue Bank helps them take one worry off their list. It frees up their resources so they can get food for themselves.”
Nick says when Animal Humane Society reached out to ask if People and Pets Together could use some of the donated cat food and dog food, it was a strong yes!
“Large donations make such a big difference to us,” says Nick. “We usually get food in small quantities and now we have enough to last several months.”
This supply of pet food gives Nick and other volunteers a small break from pounding the pavement to get more monetary and food donations for their clients. Nick says “I can’t thank all the pet food companies who donated so generously to People and Pets Together. The spirit of giving makes you feel good during these tough times.”

What Can You Donate To A Pet Food Bank
Most pet food banks need a wide range of pet food that can be easily passed on. As well as food, it’s always worth asking to see if the food banks are in need of accessories for animals, too. Some of the things you can drop off include:
- Food pouches for both dogs, cats and smaller household pets
