Pantry clearout

At SPAN we do not distribute foods that are past their expiration dates. However, if we receive expired donations, we don’t let them go to waste. We have several local partners to whom we can donate.

Food dating is confusing because the US has no standard system for it. Only 20 states require dates on some perishable foods such as meat and dairy. The one exception is infant formulas, which require an expiration date due to the deterioration of nutrients over time.

Manufacturers often place a “use by” or “best if used by” date on their items to help consumers get the best quality, but these foods will almost certainly still be good beyond this date. A sell by date tells a retailer when to pull an item from the shelves.

According to the USDA, high-acid canned goods, like tomatoes and citrus, will keep for up to 18 months. Low-acid canned goods – pretty much everything else – will last for up to five years. Canned foods are sterile, so they wont host bacteria, but eventually the taste and texture will deteriorate. Keep them at room temperature in a dark place. Toss any cans that are bulging or leaking, or that spurt liquid when opened. Although the toxin that causes botulism is extremely rare in commercial canned goods, damaged cans have a higher chance of being contaminated.

Food banks are nonprofit organizations that gather donated food from businesses and organizations, store it, distribute it to food banks, food pantries, soup kitchens, childrens cafes, and shelters that serve those in need.

A food banks mission is to guarantee the health and well-being of its customers by providing low-cost, high-quality nourishment in the quantities required by nonprofit organizations.

A food pantry is where people in need may pick up bags or boxes of food and have it delivered to their homes. Members of a food bank may acquire food from a food pantry.

The goal of both food pantries and food banks is the same: to help people in need by distributing food. A food bank makes it simple for organizations to cheaply get the nutrient-dense food they need for their customers.

A food bank in eastern P.E.I. is encouraging clients to double check that the food they’ve received isn’t expired or too far past its best before date.

Lawrence Power, manager of the Southern Kings and Queens Food Bank in Montague, said volunteers do check the dates on donated foods, but a much-publicized case about past-due food sold in B.C. has led to them to give new clients sheets explaining how to take one more look.

“We thought it would be a good idea. Just let the client know and that way it’s double-checked,” said Power.

The Montague food bank does get quite a lot of food donated that’s past its best before date, but that doesn’t concern Power. Unlike expiry dates, best before dates don’t relate to food safety, but rather to manufacturer’s guidelines on freshness.

“It’ll usually just lose the flavour. It’s not going to hurt you or anything,” he said.

“When an expiry date , you just get rid of it. That’s it, it’s done.”

Mike MacDonald, manager of the Upper Room Food Bank in Charlottetown, said Food Banks Canada guidelines allow non-perishable products to be handed out up to a year after the best before date unless the products contain eggs or are creamy.

“We’re under the understanding that it’s actually better much past a year, but at the same time I know myself I’m not going to want to get product that is six or eight or ten years past the date that I see on a can,” said MacDonald.

Understanding Food Labeling To Reduce Waste And Create A Hunger

Many of us have done it: Find an unopened box of pasta at the back of the pantry, see that its past its Best Before date, and throw it in the trash or compost to be safe. But is that really necessary? Best before and other food labelling terms can cause confusion, and many are surprised to learn that best before dates are simply a guideline, not a rule set in stone.

Best Before and expiration dates are two separate labels with separate purposes and different requirements. Understanding the difference provides insight into why the Calgary Food Bank distributes some food near or past its Best Before date, why this practice is safe, and how it can contribute to a hunger-free community.

Expiration vs. Best Before dates

An expiration date is the date after which the nutritional value of the food may decline to below whats printed on the nutrition label. An expiration date is only required for certain products, including baby formula and meal replacements. This is because these products have specific compositional specifications that might degrade after the expiration date.

Even for fresh food like meat, dairy, eggs, or bread, best before dates are more of a guide than a rule. These products often stay safe to eat past their best before date, but should be inspected for signs of spoilage. When in doubt, throw it out!

Food Insecurity And Food Donations

In 2016, 41 million people struggled with hunger in the United States, including 13 million children. In 2015, 5.4 million seniors struggled to afford enough to eat. A household that is “food insecure” lacks access to affordable and nutritious food to support a healthy life.

Approximately 1 out of every 6 people in Contra Costa and in California are food insecure, meaning these individuals or families struggle to find their next meal. Many restaurants and markets discard food that was not sold into their garbage can, which eventually ends up in the landfills. Some of this food is still wholesome for consumption.

We want to encourage people to start donating their unwanted or minimally expired food goods to designated food donation centers to help the hungry here in our county.
