Smith, 44, of Somers Point, walked a lot of others to their cars that day, shouldering the weight of bags and carts, if only for a short while.

Smith is the mobile pantry coordinator for the Community FoodBank of New Jerseys Southern Branch, which serves people in Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties. Her job is to oversee mobile pantries that set up shop five times per month for two hours at fire stations, post offices, churches and train commuter lots to help feed the regions hungriest people. The mobile pantry has become a growing part of the food banks mission, delivering nearly 1 million pounds of food a year, officials said.

Dressed in simple jeans, a black hooded sweatshirt and coat, Smith notices an older man shifting from one foot to the other, trying to move a little to ward off some of the cold.

You have gloves? she asks him. He says he is just using his coat pockets for warmth. Wait a minute, I have something for you. I know we have more left. Ah! Here, I knew we had some hand warmers around here.

The man smiles and rubs the packet between his two bare hands to increase warmth while starting at the beginning of the food line. Another man waiting in line wears old military clothing. A young woman in a sweatshirt stands near a mother with a small child bundled up in a puffy coat.

South Jersey Food Bank Hopes Giving Tuesday Will Bolster Their Resources

Miss New Jersey and team volunteer at Community FoodBank

Camden County Freeholder Jon Young and other volunteers and county employees carry boxes of fresh fruit and milk to a waiting car at Antioch Baptist Church.

Giving Tuesday like many things in this pandemic is different this year.

Many relief organizations have seen a large increase in the number of people seeking their services and are hoping that the day brings additional financial support.

Its good and bad, said Kimberly Arroyo, director of agency relations and programs for the southern branch of the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, which covers Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties.

She explained its good that they are able to assist families in the most need right now, but its bad that they are stretched in their capacity to do so.

We have increased support with the government commodities, she added. However, thats not where all of our resources come from.

The resources the organization relies on most heavily are food and money from individual and corporate donors, but donations are down.

Because of the economic hit the casino industry took in Atlantic City due to pandemic shutdowns, and recent layoffs announced by the Borgata, the food bank has seen more people in need during recent months.

We can read numbers and stats, but seeing the faces of people that you know its very humbling, Arroyo said.

Somerset County Libraries Staff Donates Supplies Food

For the 12th consecutive year, the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey has collected and donated school supplies and non-perishable items for Somerset County community members in need.

The 11-branch system through a program organized by Charlene Perkins and Jennifer McClear, co-chairs of SCLSNJs feeding minds and bodies donation drive committee collected over 434 pounds of donation items for The Food Bank Network of Somerset County, located on Easy Street, Bound Brook.

SCLSNJ includes the Warren Township and Watchung libraries.

Food bank volunteers were thrilled when the SCLSNJ van pulled into the food bank garage to unload the 26 boxes of collected school supplies and non-perishable food, said Perkins. Its a wonderful feeling to know that SCLSNJ employees are so generous in donating to this annual drive.
