What Makes Canned Food Unsafe To Consume

Is expired non-perishable food still good to donate?

There is only one thing that will impact the safety of the food consumers eat contamination. The inside of a sealed can is a sterile environment. No air equals no microbes equals no harm to the food. The natural process of decay will sap the vitamins and savoriness of the contents but the food will carry no harmful diseases.

Not all food reacts the same way to its canned incarceration, however. High-acid foods tomatoes, citrus and other fruits do not support food poisoning bacteria in any conditions and the offending germs will shortly die in such an environment. Low-acid foods mushrooms, meats, green beans typically receive a zap of sterilizing heat before canning. So, if faced with a can of food of unknown origins and age the higher the acid the safer the contents.

A compromised can will be cause for concern. Any dents or damage in a cans exterior may be an indication of seal issues. Any air that may seep into the interior can lead to disease-causing infection by bacteria. If a can is bulging or leaking it should be disposed of without consideration.

Fortunately there is no reason to worry about a cans history before consuming its contents. That is because nature has provided each and every one of us with the best arbiter of a foods safety available our reliable senses. If food from a newly opened can looks rancid or smalls bad do not eat it, regardless of any date stamped on its lid.

In 2016, 41 million people struggled with hunger in the United States, including 13 million children. In 2015, 5.4 million seniors struggled to afford enough to eat. A household that is “food insecure” lacks access to affordable and nutritious food to support a healthy life.

Many restaurants and markets discard food that was not sold into their garbage can, which eventually ends up in the landfills. Some of this food is still wholesome for consumption.

Is My Food Still Safe To Eat

Have you ever wondered what the different expiration date labels on food products mean?

While discussing how to properly check for dents in canned goods during a nutrition education class at Josephine Houston Elementary School, Maria, a class participant, raised a question about the way canned goods and other non-perishable food items are dated. Maria shared that sometimes they are easy to read, but other times they can be confusing.

Our Bilingual Nutrition Educator, Arely Torres, adapted lesson materials to address this question.

Below are several code dates that you will find in different food items:

Expiration date: This simply means what most of us think it is no longer good after this day. Whatever date is on that food item should be the last date the food can be consumed. You can typically find this in infant formula and baby food.

Sell by date: This date specifies how long the food should be displayed at the store for consumers to purchase. If the food was handled properly then it may still be safe to eat after this date. Foods that may have this label are refrigerated items like milk, yogurt, cheese, eggs and packaged salads.

Best if Used By/Before or Use By: This label refers to the last day the food item will be at its peak state. Even though its flavor or consistency is not the same after this date, the food is still safe to eat. You can look for this date on cereals, crackers, canned goods and other shelf-stable products.

Donated Meat Re-Purposed for Zoo Animals

I was pretty discouraged Day 1 at all the packaged and processed food donated. But on Day 3 we processed a large amount of frozen food from places like Sams Club. I was pleased to see all the meat, cheese and some freezable dairy. What I was really bothered by is that the meat that is deemed not fit for human consumption is sent to the Zoo. I am guessing this is where the open grain bags go as well. In talking with people about this I guess it isnt an issue for wild animals and the zoo knows how to process it safely for them. I dont know though, I wouldnt feed my dog meat I wouldnt eat so this sat funny with me.

What To Do With Expired Canned Food

As a prepper you will have a lot of expired canned food sooner or later, for the most part, these expired canned foods will be edible. Most beginner preppers make the big mistake of hoarding a lot of canned foods and then they let the canned foods just stay on the shelf, only to find that when they want to use them they are expired. Expired canned food doesnt necessarily mean it is not edible, although this mostly depends on what kind of food is in the can.

If you have expired canned food then, for the most part, they are safe to eat, if they taste and smell bad then you should throw them away. In addition to this, you can also use expired canned food for compost, feeding livestock, and recycling the cans. You can also use expired canned foods as a decoy for looters, this way your foods stockpile will be safe. You should not donate expired canned foods as most of them will end up in the trash, even if most canned foods are safe to eat after the best by or the sell by date.

If you do not want to worry about your stored food expiring and going bad then my personal recommendation is to have a couple of emergency food supplies, as these have a shelflife between 10-30 years on Amazon.com

On a trip here last year with some bloggers we saw pallets and pallets of Sun Drop soda. All of us were taken aback. Apparently, that is par for the course. During my volunteer time I processed more 2 liters of various types of pop than I knew existed. Coming in a close second were Pop Tarts. I am certainly not a health food fanatic but I think everyone agrees that they wouldnt want to open a food box full of only that to feed their family. I wouldnt.

Feed Livestock With Expired Canned Food

Why food banks prefer cash over cans

For the most part, if the canned food is expired but it hasnt gone bad you can still feed it to livestock. For the most part, if the canned food has expired only a couple of months ago it should be still safe to eat but it will probably not taste the best. Before feeding any livestock expired canned food you should check if the contents of the can have not gone bad. If the canned food has expired and its contents have gone bad then do not feed your livestock with it.

On the other hand, if the canned food is expired but it only tastes a little bit off than it is safe to feed the livestock. Just keep in mind what kind of expired canned foods you feed to your livestock, canned meats should not be fed to livestock as they contain a lot of oil and grease, and a lot of herbivores will have a difficult time digesting it.

Can I Donate Expired Food Or Perishable Food

At SPAN we do not distribute foods that are past their expiration dates. However, if we receive expired donations, we don’t let them go to waste. We have several local partners to whom we can donate.

Food dating is confusing because the US has no standard system for it. Only 20 states require dates on some perishable foods such as meat and dairy. The one exception is infant formulas, which require an expiration date due to the deterioration of nutrients over time.

Manufacturers often place a “use by” or “best if used by” date on their items to help consumers get the best quality, but these foods will almost certainly still be good beyond this date. A sell by date tells a retailer when to pull an item from the shelves.

According to the USDA, high-acid canned goods, like tomatoes and citrus, will keep for up to 18 months. Low-acid canned goods – pretty much everything else – will last for up to five years. Canned foods are sterile, so they wont host bacteria, but eventually the taste and texture will deteriorate. Keep them at room temperature in a dark place. Toss any cans that are bulging or leaking, or that spurt liquid when opened. Although the toxin that causes botulism is extremely rare in commercial canned goods, damaged cans have a higher chance of being contaminated.

Lessons Learned Volunteering At Food Bank

Ive spent the last couple of afternoons working at The Food Bank of the Rockies in what is known as the Reclamation Area. This is the main area that donated food gets processed and sorted. I have learned a lot these past few days and wanted to pass it on in hopes that what I have seen helps you as you prepare to donate food to food bank.

On the 1st day we processed foods that were donated from area stores that had been pulled from their shelves for one reason or another. This food had been stored for some time and it all needed to be wiped down with bleach and sorted into 40 lb boxes by its type. I was shocked when I got there and was handed an apron and gloves to protect myself from the bleach. I couldnt fathom why on earth we were wiping food with a chemical. Then I opened my first box. The bottom was full of rodent poop. OK, I can see why now. Cans, bags & boxes were all given a bleach wipe before heading to the sorting area.
