Items You Shouldnt Donate To Food Banks

As you compile your list, be sure to remember that there are certain items food banks are unable to take, like:

  • Items in glass containers, usually because the glass containers may break easily and spoil the other donations.
  • Opened items, as these cant be served or provided to individuals for food safety and contamination purposes.
  • And while this one might seem obvious: expired items. Be sure to check those expiration dates!

Tennesseans planning on visiting the Tennessee Department of Motor Vehicle before the new year are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to help those in need.

The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Securitys Driver Services division encourages Tennesseans to show their volunteer spirit through the end of the year by bringing non-perishable food items to any DMV in the state. The items received by each DMV will then be donated to local food banks and organizations to help families in need across the Volunteer State.

Kindness is a gift we can share with one another, Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Jeff Long said in a statement. Lets do the right thing and help feed our fellow Tennesseans.

Each DMV location across the state will have a donation bin set up through December 30th.

Keep those donations coming! Now through December 30th, Driver Services Centers are collecting unexpired, non-perishable food items to deliver to food banks & organizations across Tennessee! We recently delivered donated food to Matthew 25:40!

This Is What Food Banks Actually Need

Give generously to your local food bank this holiday season, and make sure youâre giving the stuff they really need.

Thanksgiving rocks. Itâs a long holiday weekend to spend with family and friends and a chance to give thanks for a life thatâs good. Of course, itâs also a great time to think about helping people who might not have enough to eat by donating to a canned food drive that benefits your local food bank.

Silvia Davi, chief marketing officer of Food Bank For New York City, told BuzzFeed Life that donations to area food banks, which help feed millions of Americans, are more important than ever because of cuts to federal funding of food assistance programs.

Davi adds, âPart of what Food Bank prides itself on is nutrition education and offering healthy foods to those we serve. We welcome food donations low in fat and sodium, high in protein, and rich in all the kinds of good ingredients that you would find in your own homes.â

She stresses that food banks in New York and around the country are looking for healthy options to make sure individuals and families who need assistance are getting nutritious meals, so we asked nutritionists to weigh in on the best foods you can donate. And donât forget, their tips for making healthy eating choices around the holidays can apply to you too.

What Is Considered A Non Perishable Food Item

Non Perishable Foods are safe to eat for long periods of time without refrigeration. They are also known as shelf stable foods.

Some foods can last a few weeks to months on the shelf. Others can last for months. The longest last 10 to 20 years or more, such as freeze dried food or military MREs.

Note: In spite of some silly prepper shows might say, it is not recommended to live off of nothing but MREs for an extended period of time. They are nutrient dense, but can be hard on your guts.

A young reporter took the 21 day nothing but MREs challenge in 2016.

He wrote, I would alternate between vicious cycles of spending hours in the bathroom and then not being able to go at all.

Many granola bars stay fresh for up to 1 year at room temperature. Likewise, most protein bars have a shelf life of at least 1 year, though its best to check the label on individual products for expiration information .

Whats more, granola and protein bars can be highly nutritious as long as you choose the right kinds. Look for brands that are full of hearty ingredients, such as oats, nuts, and dried fruit, and contain minimal added sugars and artificial ingredients.

There are a lot of food drives during the holidays. What food banks need most is cash, but when the Scouts come knocking at your door collecting food or you’re asked to bring a non-perishable item as entrance to the schools holiday concert, food is in order.

NPR did a piece on the types of pantry staples that can help those who rely on food banks to build healthy meals. Food banks say the focus should be on on whole, unprocessed or minimally processed foods to help people create healthy meals. Instead of donating foods that are high in salt, sugar and highly processed grains, bring foods that are high in protein, healthy fats and whole grains instead.

Welcome back to the distant moon Pandora, the paradise of the saintly, otherworldly Navi people, menaced by nasty, gnarly Col. Miles Quaritch. The sequel to the biggest film hit ever boasts whale-like tulkun, skimwings, ilus and ikran, dragon-like predators that make the fire-breathing beasts in Game of Thrones seem like beagles. Director James Cameron completely succeeds at world building hes the Jacques Cousteau of CGI undersea photography. Why is it a lock for a visual effects Oscar? Because it may be the movie that most exemplifies why we should go out to the theater for that big-screen, big special effects experience. Who doesnt love iridescent sea creatures, fiery cinders and weapons poking into the theater through the magic of 3D? If theres only one movie you put on pants and leave the house for, this one is it for the visuals alone. T.M.A.

Where To Buy Donations

There is no wrong place to source your donations, and even your own pantry is a good start . Similarly, any grocery store or food warehouse will do.

For this project, I wanted to buy a lot, and I thought that Aldi was my best bet.

Here are the reasons I like to shop at Aldi for donations:

  • All of the foods go on the shelf in boxes. Aldi saves money by putting items on the shelf still in their original shipping boxes. Nobody is paid to unload individual food items and line them up on shelves as you see at other grocery stores. This was the biggest reason I wanted to shop at Aldi. I could easily grab box after box of canned goods, packages, and bags, and it was easy to stack, sorted, and organized.
  • Aldi has really low prices. There are probably 20 grocery stores between Aldi and me, but I knew my dollars would go much further there, so I drove across town. Besides, they have high-quality private label products and a selection of mass-market items, too.
  • The shopping carts are large. If youve never shopped at Aldi, you might not know the quirk about the quarter. Aldi also saves money by making customers fetch and return their own carts . All that aside, the shopping carts are huge and I was able to buy a lot. It still took 2 shopping carts, though.

HOLT, Mich. – Holt Public Schools holiday food donation program collected 2,983 pounds of non-perishable food items for the Holt Community Food Bank.

Around the holidays, the district collects pantry items from students, teachers, and staff members for the food bank. Food items are dropped in baskets placed in buildings throughout the district.

Its wonderful to see our entire learning community rally around a cause that is so important to many in our area, said Dr. David Hornak, Holt Public Schools superintendent.

The Holt Community Food Bank is a volunteer-run organization that serves an average of 50-60 families each month. The organization provides enough food to families for a weeks worth of meals, including non-perishable items as well as produce, meats, dairy, and bread products.

The food bank relies on monetary donations, food contributions, and the volunteer support of local businesses, service organizations, individuals, and grants. The large donation from Holt Public Schools is critically important to its work, said Marni Swanson, director of the Holt Community Food Bank.

We are grateful to Holt Public Schools for its continued support of our mission, Swanson said. Donations like this one make it possible for us to continue doing what we do best: Serve those in the community who need a little help.

Best Nuts And Nut Butters To Stock Up On

Nuts are an excellent source of protein and healthy fats. That makes them great snacks, or they can be sprinkled into sweet and savory dishes for extra protein and texture. They’re also considered nonperishable, but the shelf life really depends on how they’re stored.

They come with a “best by” date because they can go rancid at room temperature. The best way to buy and store nuts is in the shell, because they’ll last longer. Without the shell in an unopened package, almonds last the longestthey can stay fresh up to one year after their “best by” date, while pine nuts only last up to two months past their “best by” date, according to EatByDate.com. Pair those with dried fruit or granola as an easy, on-the-go snack or breakfast that doesn’t call for a fridge.

Unopened nut butters like peanut butter or almond butter can last up to two years in the pantry, which means they’re good to stock up on. After they’re opened, they last up to three months, but refrigerating them can extend their life to six months.
