Atlanta Community Food Bank Breaks Ground
ATLANTA – The Atlanta Community Food Bank breaks ground on its new headquarters.
The food bank held a ceremony Friday afternoon at the new facility’s location on Desert Drive.
Officials say the food bank distributes more than 70 million pounds of food a year.
Even still, they estimate nearly 820,000 people living in the counties they serve still experience food insecurity.
Officials say this new, larger facility will allow for better distribution of food and resources.

Atlanta Food Bank Officials Asks For Publics Help To Find New Location After Receiving Notice
Atlanta food bank seeking assistance in search of a new location after receiving notice
Officials with the Southwest Ecumenical Emergency Assistance Center. or SWEEAC, say that they are searching for a new location and are asking for the public’s help. Formed in 1988 by leaders of several churches in southwest Atlanta, the organization is now focused on finding a new home after receiving a notice to vacate their current space in 60 days.
ATLANTA – A busy day for staff and volunteers at the Southwest Ecumenical Emergency Assistance Center, packing food boxes for distribution across metro-Atlanta.
James McLemore has been coming here for about four years. He is one of the many seniors who benefit from the program by sharing the meat, produce, and other items in his food boxes with neighbors.
McLemore told FOX 5 Atlantas’ Deidra Dukes, “It’s very important, very important. Everybody needs a place they can go and get some help.”
Leaders of several churches in southwest Atlanta formed the organization in 1988 to address the demand for services in their community.
Tammy Patterson oversees food distribution.
“A lot of families are having a hard time. They are trying to decide if they are going to pay their light bill, pay rent, or buy groceries,” Patterson said.
SWEEAC serves some 5000 families a month in the Atlanta area, supplying them with food boxes, clothing, toiletries, household cleaning items, and school supplies.

JONESBORO Atlanta Community Food Bank is putting down roots in Clayton County.
The Jonesboro City Council approved the food banks request for a conditional use permit to open a Community Food Center in the old Ingles shopping center on Stockbridge Road. The center will occupy the now vacant former Dollar General and church store fronts.
ACFB Communications Director Edward Westreicher said the food bank is currently building out the location to create a pleasant and functional space to visit. When determined, an official opening date will be announced for the new center.
“We look forward to serving our neighbors in the area as soon as we can,” he said.
Until then, those in need can visit www.acfb.org to find a pantry location.
The center, according Debra Shoaf with ACFB, will operate similar to grocery store curbside services in that customers will drive up, park in a designated spot and food will be loaded into their cars by a volunteer.
Food center locations, Shoaf said, are selected based on where there is a high need with fewer services from partner agencies.

The Commodity Supplemental Food Program is a federal program that targets low-income seniors in Georgia, sixty years of age or older, to help supplement their diets by providing them with nutritious commodities and nutrition education information at no cost.
Under CSFP, commodity foods are made available to states by the United States Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Service. Foods available for monthly distribution may include milk, canned vegetables, cereal, pasta, rice, canned meats, canned fruit, juices, peanut butter, dried beans and cheese. In Georgia, two Food Banks have been selected to distribute these food commodities: The Atlanta Community Food Bank and the Second Harvest Food Bank of South Georgia:
- The Atlanta Community Food Bank serves Bartow, Butts, Carroll, Clayton, Cobb, Dawson, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Morgan, Newton, Paulding, Polk, Rockdale and Walton counties. The food bank can be reached at 832-4968.

Atlanta Community Food Bank To Build New Headquarters
The Atlanta Community Food Bank break ground on its new headquarters Friday, according to a press release.
Considered by many in the metro area the backbone of the nonprofit hunger relief system, the organization maintains the infrastructure that allows for the distribution of food to people in need. Through a network of over 600 partner agencies, the Food Bank distributed 61 million meals to Georgians last year. In 2018, the Food Bank launched a Capital Campaign, Growing Healthy Futures, to dramatically increase their ability to distribute more food to more people in need.
Members of the Food Banks board and staff, partners, donors, community members, elected officials, and dignitaries from its 29-county service area gathered on Friday, Jan. 25 to commemorate a new chapter.
Motivated by the knowledge that relieving hunger has the power to change the trajectory of a persons life, we are driven to grow our response to ongoing food insecurity by closing the hunger gap and ensuring all children and families have access to the healthy, nutritious food they need to thrive, said Kyle Waide, President and CEO of the Atlanta Community Food Bank in a written statement.
The will be located at the intersection of Redwine Road and Desert Drive in East Point. Food bank officials say the new facility will be easily accessible through MARTA bus routes and Interstate 285.
The new building is expected open this summer or spring 2020 at the latest.

Atlanta Community Food Bank To Receive $29 Million Federal Covid
The Atlanta Community Food Bank is receiving $29 million from the states portion of federal American Rescue Plan Act funds.
Food Bank President and CEO Kyle Waide said the funding will support what the nonprofit is doing between now and 2024, to purchase essential grocery items for families facing food insecurity a federal term describing the conditions of a household without consistent access to enough food for everyone in the home to live an active, healthy life.
The state is still finalizing the details of how the funding will be distributed, but Waide said its the largest single-funding award in the Food Banks history, and one of the largest given to a single food bank in the country.
The funds come from the $1.9 trillion bill President Joe Biden signed into law last March to provide relief to citizens amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Atlanta Community Food Bank estimates more than half of the people it serves are working families that earn too much to qualify for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, but not enough to meet their basic needs with rising healthcare, housing and food costs.
Prior to the pandemic, the Food Bank spent an estimated $2 million a year to supply goods to more than 700 nonprofits to aid to 700,000 families across 29 counties in Georgia. The cost of their food purchases jumped to roughly $13 million due to COVID, representing a nearly 600% increase compared to pre-COVID levels.

Atlanta Community Food Bank Unveils World’s Largest Non
ATLANTA, Ga. — Atlanta has the largest non-profit food bank facility in the world. The Atlanta Community Food Bank opened it to the public for the first time on September 24, 2021, and they gave CW69 a first hand look inside the state-of-the-art building.
Volunteers and workers at the food bank now have a 345,000 square foot facility to work in. “I got to see their old facility when I was a freshman, and so now I’m coming back almost a year and a half later. It’s awesome,” said Gabrielle Davis, a volunteer.
Officials held a warehouse warming to celebrate the occasion. “This building represents what can happen when community comes together with one common goal and one common purpose,” said ACFB CEO Kyle Waide. They broke ground on the building in 2019 and operations started in 2020. COVID kept it closed to the public until now, and they created other ways to get food to those in need. “We have been engaged in one marathon sprint after another, designing the building, raising the money, managing the construction,” said ACFB Board of Directors Chair Mitch Harrison.

Atlanta Community Food Bank Receives $58 Million Investment

The Atlanta Community Food Bank is receiving millions of dollars to provide additional food and support to communities across Georgia, according to BlueHub Capital, a national nonprofit community development finance organization.
On Tuesday, BlueHub announced its making a $5.8 million New Markets Tax Credit investment in the Food Bank, which gives food to more than700 nonprofits in 29 Georgia counties.
The federal New Markets Tax Credit program uses money from the U.S. Department of the Treasury to make operating capital available as low-interest loans. Its not a donation from BlueHub, whose $543 million tax credit program supports low-income areas.
The funds will support the Food Banks efforts to add 81 new full-time positions, retain 159 full-time employees, and help fund the distribution of 107 million pounds of food this year, according to BlueHub.
Elyse Cherry, BlueHub Capitals CEO, said in a statement that BlueHub wants to support the Food Bank because the Food Banks budgets and operations were challenged by the pandemic.

East Point, GA RDP partnered with The Reinvestment Fund, Kroger, and PNC Bank to provide the Food Bank $46MM in New Markets Tax Credit Financing to construct and operate a new 345,000 SF warehouse and distribution facility in East Point, GA.
The new facility will allow the Food Bank to double its distribution of food to those in need. The Food Bank is focusing on providing healthy foods to the low-income community and with 70,000 SF of new fridge space, they are expecting to quadruple the amount of fresh produce distributed.
Foodinsecurity is spread across all demographic groups in ACFBs service area, but families with children account for more than 60% of the food insecure population and account for 68% of the unmet need.
Working families also make up the majority of the food insecure population. Almost 60% of food insecure households include someone working outside the home and 93% live in permanent housing. The working poor are the new face of hunger in ACFBs service area.
Reinvestment Fund Financing Is Helping The Atlanta Community Food Bank Construct A New Warehouse And Distribution Facility That Will Serve Metro Atlanta And North Georgia
This project will expand Atlanta Community Food Banks physical and organizational capacity, bringing all distribution, programming, and staff under one roof in a new, 345,000 square foot distribution and headquarters facility.
Approximately one in seven people in ACFBs service area, which includes 29 counties in metro Atlanta and North Georgia, are food insecure, meaning that they do not have access to enough food for an active, healthy life. ACFB estimates that they currently reach approximately 755,000 people who are food insecure in their region. This project will enable ACFB to close the meal gap by 2025 and serve food insecure people that ACFB cannot currently serve. By 2025, ACFB will distribute 50 million lbs of fresh produce, an increase of 3.8x their distribution in 2016 and 115 million meals and 145 million lbs of food, doubling their 2016 distribution.
The project expects to create 100 full time equivalent construction jobs, retain 168 permanent jobs, and create 80 new jobs. ACFB is partnering with First Step Staffing, a Reinvestment Fund borrower, to train and hire people who face barriers to employment including people who are formerly homeless and formerly incarcerated.

Food Banks Keep Getting Bigger
Food banks have a bigger presence in the U.S. than ever.
Its not just that millions of Americans turned to food banks for the first time during the pandemic. Its also that food banks are exploding in terms of sheer footprint.
Most prominent is Atlanta Community Food Banks new 345,000 square-foot facility, which now serves as the food banks headquarters, warehouse and distribution center, replacing two buildings of 130,000 square feet. Roughly the size of five and half football fields, it is being billed as the worlds single largest food bank facility.
The Atlanta food bank is hardly alone:
- Los Angeles Regional Food Bank in 2020 bought a 255,000 square-foot building that it recently opened and continues to renovate.
- Second Harvest Heartlands new 233,000 square-foot facility near Minneapolis replaces one that was 75,000 square feet.
- Philabundance in the fall leased a 130,000 square-foot building to support food distribution, a year after opening a new 18,000 square-foot culinary training center.
- The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts is developing a 61,000 square-foot property that will double the size of its current location.
- River Bend Food Bank in Iowa is adding a third location and expanding its primary facility, while Community Food Bank of New Jersey is planning a capital campaign to replace its current 80-year-old facility.
