Donating To The Patch Holiday Food Drive Or To Other Charities In Alameda Is Tax
ALAMEDA, CA If youre one of many in Alameda who claim the standard deduction rather than itemize your tax returns and most people do heres some good news if you were thinking about donating to Feeding America through Patchs annual food drive.
If you plan to claim the standard deduction on your 2021 tax returns, you can actually write off up to $600 in contributions to charities such as Feeding America, provided you give by Dec. 31. These write-offs are possible thanks to a charitable-giving deduction authorized by Congress in response to the pandemic.
Nationwide, more than 38 million Americans including 12 million children are considered food insecure, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Feeding America says as many as 42 million Americans could go hungry in 2021.

A little or a lot its all valuable and helps reduce the amount of perfectly good food going to waste in America. Read an article about Project Pick published in the Alameda Sun here.

Board of Supervisors Office Display Have a Heart
In its seventh year, a record 20 County departments participated in Alameda Countys 2020 Stone Soup Food Drive and Design Competition. The theme for this years competition was Have a Heart, which highlighted the compassion, empathy and kindness that County employees bring to those in need. The County raised 19,070.32 pounds, which is over 9 and a half tons, of food and exceeded our $20,000 goal to donate over $22,934.43 in monetary donations to the Alameda County Community Food Bank ! In support of our Stone Soup donation to the ACCFB, the Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation founded by Stephen and Ayesha Curry will be matching our donation dollar for dollar raising a total of $45,868 for the Food Bank! The Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation helps provide meals to ensure that no child in our community worries about where their next meal comes from while schools are closed.
To help meet the demands for high need pop top items for individuals facing food insecurity, we doubled the points allocated to these items. Pop top items are items that have a tab or ring that can be pulled or pushed to make an opening in the top of a container, which makes the donated food more easily accessible to eat. Agencies/Departments who donated high need pop top items boosted their overall score! The total poundage with the points doubled was 27,882.86.

Brands
As an Extension of This Years Tour, Farmer John is Launching its California Kindness Project to Support California Non-profits with $100,000 in Grants
VERNON, Calif., July 26, 2022 /PRNewswire/ The Farmer John brand has been rooted in California since 1931 and has had the privilege of feeding and supporting its communities for more than nine decades. Farmer Johns heart will always be in California and thats why the brand is dedicated to finding even more ways to invest in the Golden States communities and support brand fans for years to come. As part of this promise, the brand is embarking on year three of its California Commitment Tour to feed, celebrate, and serve residents across the state. Over the course of eight weeks this summer, Farmer John is making 3-4 stops per week with its food truck to deliver free grab-and-go lunches to Californians and essential businesses and donating much-needed protein to local food banks.
Generous contributions like the donation we received from Farmer John are incredibly important for organizations like ours, said, Michael Altfest, director of community engagement at Alameda County Community Food Bank. Protein items are among the most requested at our distributions, but are also among the most expensive for us to procure. This donation is greatly appreciated and goes a long way in helping us meet the need in our community.

West Oakland Food Pantry
The West Oakland Food Pantry was established in 2007 and provides healthy, nutritional food to West Oakland families.
Back in 2007, full and partial closures of food pantries, such as Womens Economic Agenda Project , Catholic Charities, St. Patrick, and Mt. Zion left a significant gap in emergency food services for a community that was already plagued with high poverty and unemployment rates. To fill the increasing gap in food security, the Prescott-Joseph Center established the West Oakland Food Panty. This food safety net program is one initiative to help alleviate hunger and strengthen individuals and families living in West Oakland. There is an estimated 31,118 West Oakland residents with 38% living below the poverty level and approximately half of the households with an annual income of less than $20,000. WOFP and PJC provides support to families who are in need of emergency food and other essential supplies. In partnership with the Alameda County Food Bank, and thanks to the generous support of the Crescent-Porter-Hale Foundation, Amazon, Kaiser, and individual donations, we are making a difference.
Our food distribution also provides food to those individuals participating in our other programs, including seniors, pre preschool families, after school youth soccer families, and our community partners. The WOFP is also a community diaper distribution site for families in need.

We wanted to let you know about Robs fundraising efforts for the Alameda County Community Food Bank This is a cause very near and dear to his heart and to the heart of the c510 cycling team. c510 is a group of local east bay riders 30 strong who love to be out on our local roads training and competing. Rob feels incredibly fortunate to have good health and a beautiful natural setting in which to ride! For Rob, this annual fundraiser is a way to give back to the community. In the last four years, Robs cycling club has raised over $60,000 for the ACCFB, which has provided over 120,000 meals to people who really need the help! This year, Rob is going for a personal best and is working to raise $8,000 for the ACCFB.
The 3rd installment of the event was a huge success, raising $25,000 for the Food Bank! The team even got a little tv time on kpix:
The Alameda County Community Food Bank provides a massive resource to families in the East Bay particularly to children and elderly people. Because of the partner and affiliate organizations that support the ACCFB, they are able to consolidate donations and buying power to provide meals to literally 1 out of every 5 residents in Alameda County. Amazing!
We invite you to support this essential organization. Its easy!

But cant I just have just one barrel?
Seriouslywe cant thank you enough for wanting to make a meaningful impact on our community. Unfortunately, the pandemic has caused the need for our services to skyrocket and our trucks are at near-capacity delivering food to our community. In a perfect world, everyone would have a barrelor ten , but at this time we can only drop-off and pick-up barrels for food drives which can guarantee 400 lbs. of food or more . And, dont forget, you can always try a Virtual Food Drive which is our greenest option and helps ACCFB to purchase our communitys most-needed items. Thanks for your understanding.

Alameda County Food Bank Faces Dual Strain Of Rising Demand Inflation
ALAMEDA Nationally, inflation has hit 9.1% the highest in 40 years. While the Bay Area didn’t see a jump to those levels, it was high enough and food banks are seeing a huge increase in the need for food and the cost to do business.
Those at the Alameda County Community Food Bank have noticed a line of cars starting at 6:30 in the morning, with people waiting to grab a box of groceries. This as donations to keep dwindling.
From the drive thru, to those standing in line, the Alameda County Community Food Bank hasn’t been this busy in years.
Michael Altfest, the food bank’s Director of Community Engagement and Marketing said, “Right now we’re seeing a confluence of forces that are coming together and we’re experiencing demand as high as we have seen at any point in the pandemic.”
Altfest said the walk-up line has grown by 100 to 150 people in the last couple of months. The cost to provide food is not only driven up by the increase in need, but also inflation.
“Prior to the pandemic, our food costs were about $250,000 a month. Now we are regularly hitting up to $1.5 million per month in food purchases,” Altfest told KPIX 5.
The food bank also has a fleet of ten vans to make deliveries throughout the county. In the Bay Area, inflation saw a 6.8% increase last month, with gasoline contributing the most to the increase in June prices.
Food banks can use every donation, no matter how small it may be.

Put An End To Hunger In Alameda County

Skyline Community Church has partnered with Alameda County Community Food Bank for decades. In 2011 we made a major donation and presented a matching challenge to major corporate sponsors to support their fundraising efforts. Given the recent reports on poverty, particularly among children and the elderly in Alameda County, such donations are critical.
In total, Skyline contributed $30,000 in 2010 and 11 to ACCFB, inspired a matching challenge that was met, and with their purchasing power, our gift turned into over $500K worth of fresh healthy food for families here in Alameda County. Our efforts were made possible, through the grace of God working through us, to provide for so many just like the multiplication of the loaves and fishes making the world a bit more like the Kingdom of Heaven.
In the years since, Skyline has sponsored a yearly food donation drive and collected donations. We are feeding the hungry!
