Why Is Snap Important

Second Harvest Food Bank

SNAP provides families with their basic nutritional needs to get them through temporary hard times. It helps people get back on their feet and on the road to a better life in 2015, SNAP lifted 4.6 million Americans above the poverty line, including 2 million children and 366,000 seniors. Moreover, SNAP helps to ensure that children are given a fair chance at healthy adulthood, that seniors age with dignity and that family can care for themselves. SNAP is absolutely critical to making sure no one in America goes hungry.

On top of that, SNAP supports Americas economy and creates jobs. Research from Moodys Analytics suggests that for every dollar spent by SNAP, 1.7 dollars are added to the economy. A 2010 study by the USDA found that for every $1 billion of added SNAP funding, between 8,900 and 17,000 jobs were created. By contrast, another study found that for every $1 billion in cuts, 11,437 jobs would be destroyed.

Healthy Food Belongs To Us All

As a food bank, Second Harvest is a network leader that finds strength by participating, hope by listening, and connection by sharing with our community.

Since 1986, Second Harvest has provided over 184 million meals to the communities we support.

Im really grateful for this opportunity. Its just helped me so much to step outside of my comfort zone and to let others experience my food my way. I have a mission, and Second Harvest has helped me spread my wings.

First of all, I like to help people. I like the friendly atmosphere here. I totally feel a connection. Our people need a lot of help, and I know this feeling, so I can feel that people here also need help with food.

I love the Second Harvest pantry, and it helps a lot. The workers are good to get along with and very understanding. And theyre good items that you receive. It makes things a lot easier!

I dont know what they would do if they didnt get this food. It would be a lot harder for me and a lot of people.

How Does Snap Work

SNAP provides timely, targeted, and temporary benefits to people in need so that Americans have access to nutritious food. SNAP responds quickly to changes in our population, growing in response to increases in poverty and unemployment, and shrinking as the need is met and reduced. SNAP is administered by the states, which have considerable discretion to adapt the program to best meet the needs of their residents.

Food Distribution Site At Cajun Field To Open Friday For Covid

Second Harvest Food Bank MAY 2021 SCHEDULE_MOBILE MARKET

UL Lafayette is partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank and United Way of Acadiana to establish a drive-thru food distribution site at Cajun Field for people experiencing economic hardship during the COVID-19 outbreak.

The distribution site will be open from 2-4 p.m. Friday. Volunteers wearing gloves and face masks will load boxes of food into vehicles, said Gretchen Lacombe Vanicor, director of UL Lafayettes Office of Sustainability.

Motorists should enter the distribution site from Cajundome Boulevard, at Gate 5 on Reinhardt Drive. Attendees are encouraged to wear face masks and gloves.

Food will be provided for anyone in need of assistance while supplies last. Organizers estimate to have enough food on hand for between 1,000 and 1,500 families. Registration isnt required.

The distribution site is not a drop-off point for donations. Vanicor, however, said donations are continually needed to keep shelves at Second Harvest, United Way and the Universitys Campus Cupboard stocked.

Campus Cupboard is a resource for undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty and staff members who require short-term assistance meeting their food needs.

Food donations brought to the distribution site will be redirected to the Second Harvest warehouse at 215 E. Pinhook Rd.

Anyone interested in donating money can do so by visiting Second Harvest and United Way websites.

A Special Thank You To Brenda Ewart

Some 26 years ago, as her youngest of three children headed into Grade 1, Richmond Hills Brenda Ewart took a part-time job as manager of the Richmond Hill Community Food Bank.

Our family attended Richmond Hill United Church where the food bank was located at the time, and the minister suggested I apply for the job, explained Ewart, stating one attraction was she could be home before her children returned from school.

But what started as a job, has become a passion and has consumed far more hours each week than originally forecast, and has pulled in her husband, Bob, as well. Although she has been paid, both have donated many volunteer hours over the years to what has become a labour of love for both.

Bob had his eyes opened and so did the kids to the need for the food bank, explained Ewart. And the volunteers have become my friends, my family. Some have volunteered longer than Ive been here! Read more.

Hunger And Hope In The Heartland

The pervasiveness of hunger has become undeniable, and demand for food assistance continues to rise. But, working together, we all make it easier for our neighbors to reach out when they need help. We’re feeding families. We’re changing lives.

Its just as simple as a meal, but when youre a single mom, its more than just that. When we can come home to these prepared meals, it takes hours off my evening.

We support Second Harvest because they ensure families can focus on the bigger things they want out of life.

Because of my health problems, I need healthy food. , you dont have to buy canned you can go for the fresh because thats what your body wants.

Hunger exists no matter what shape the economy is in, or how many jobs exist. Together, we can make all the difference.

Not only are small, emerging farmers being paid a fair price for their harvest, but that harvest is directly fighting hunger in diverse communities.

We havent had money for food. Sometimes the only food weve had in a week has been a box from Valley Outreach . We are just incredibly grateful.

We never know what cards life will deal us, but we do know we can always help others if theyve received a disadvantaged hand.
