The Fruit Tree Project is a Second Harvest volunteer-driven program that collects fruit and produce from local residents. This means we are now able to help secure donations of nutritious fruit from generous individuals, and it also gives the community additional volunteer opportunities to help harvest the fruit.

The Fruit Tree Project focuses on picking mainly from the yards of individual homeowners with fewer than 10 fruit trees. But if you have a much larger farm or orchard, wed also like to hear from you! We are fortunate to have some very large local farms donate excess or slightly blemished produce that would otherwise wind up in a landfill.

Maple Street Patisserie donates thousands of baked goods to Second Harvest Food Bank

NEW ORLEANS Second Harvest Food Bank is about to mark its 40th anniversary by unveiling a $15 million overhaul of its headquarters at 700 Edwards Avenue in Elmwood. The improvements, paid for by a multi-year capital campaign, include a new roof, additional air conditioning, new bathrooms with showers, a new kitchen, a multipurpose meeting room, extra offices and an employee lounge built to accommodate meetings.

The food banks 6,500-square-foot kitchen is now capable of producing 15,000 meals each day. The new roof and air-conditioning will create a better working environment for staffers and volunteers, and the showers will help during major weather events, when workers and emergency personnel shelter at the facility.

A worker takes measurements as he prepares to hang art in the nearly complete lobby at the Second Harvest headquarters.

Eskew Dumez Ripple is the projects architect. DonahueFavret is leading the construction.

We needed air conditioning. We needed a new roof. We needed more space to hold volunteers, and we needed another line in our kitchen for local farmers to come in and do some value-added processing, said Natalie Jayroe, Second Harvest president and CEO . People are always shocked when I tell them that I am so happy about these bathrooms because they have showers in them, but its really because it allows us to turn this into a dormitory in a worst-case scenario.

Ultimately, all the individual efforts are directed toward the same goal.

For the first two years of Second Harvests existence it operated out of a 48,000 square foot warehouse on St. George Avenue, Jefferson Parish, loaned by Mr. Joseph Uddo. On January 10, 1985, it purchased a 15,500 square foot warehouse at 728 Hill Street for $340,000. However, distribution continued to grow and within five years Second Harvest needed to move again to a larger facility. Through the efforts of Anne Milling, Hormel made a generous donation of half the price of an warehouse it was selling at 1201 Sams Avenue in Harahan. Many generous gifts were given by community foundations and individuals, and Second Harvest was able to move into its current 29,000 square foot warehouse on 3 acres on March 13, 1991.

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck Second Harvests service area, followed by Hurricane Rita on September 24, 2005. Forced out of its facility in New Orleans, the staff of Second Harvest regrouped in Baton Rouge within 48 hours of Katrinas landfall, despite the fact that many of the staff had lost their own homes and others were unaware of the fate of their friends and family members.
