Second Harvest Expands Into Marion County Merging With First Step Food Bank

First Step Food Bank has been feeding Marion County residents in need for 30 years by providing food to churches and other nonprofits.
Now it is handing off its mission to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. First Step has a history with Second Harvest, as its distributor for federal emergency food assistance in Marion County.
But last year Second Harvest lost its contract for this region, being replaced by Farm Share in the region that includes Marion County, and First Step lost the administrative funds and food that came with that contract.
The merger will keep the food flowing to 41 agencies in the county. And Executive Director Peter Del Toro and his part-time staff will stay on.
The need has increased, Del Torro said. We want to just make sure that we have the opportunity for access to food for all these folks that come to the pantries.

Second Harvest President and CEO Derrick Chubbs says there are no immediate plans to start making changes.
Chubbs plans to complete the merger by January, creating a Marion County branch. He envisions home-delivery programs like the one in Orange County and summer feeding programs, too.

Second Harvest Food Bank Holiday Food Drive Aims To Help Thousands
Second Harvest Food Bank is kicking off its Food from the Heart Holiday Food Drive to collect food and monetary donations to meet the increased need for meals during the Christmas holiday. Residents, businesses, civic organizations, and schools throughout Acadiana are encouraged to donate much-needed non-perishable food items through December 21, 2022.
Acadiana has a rich tradition of neighbors looking out for each other. Through natural disasters, personal tragedies, and other hard times, were there for each otherbecause thats the kind of community we are, said Second Harvests Regional Director Paul Scelfo. We are calling on the community to support hungry children, seniors, veterans, college students, and working families by participating in this important holiday campaign.
The need for food assistance has always been great throughout Acadiana, but with the price of everyday groceries increasing by as much as 14%, the food bank and its partners are seeing many new faces at local food pantries. So far, in 2022, the food bank has seen a 5.5% monthly average increase in the number of people seeking food assistance at a time when donations from retailers and food manufacturing partners have been scaled back due to supply chain challenges.
All food donations can be dropped off at various locations throughout Acadiana, including Second Harvests warehouse at 215 East Pinhook Road, Lafayette, LA, 70501, Monday-Friday between 8:00 AM 4:00 PM.

REGIONAL NON-PROFIT NEWS Three companies recently donated 15,000 pounds of food equating to 12,500 meals to Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee through a partnership with Feeding America. Food insecurity heighted throughout the pandemic, and Feeding America foodbanks like Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee struggled to keep up with demand. Walmart, Bimbo Bakeries USA and Tyson Foods joined forces to make the donation.
The food will be distributed to food insecure families in 46 counties in Middle and West Tennessee including Moore County over the next several weeks. Second Harvest distributes food and other products to approximately 460 nonprofit partner agencies including food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, childcare facilities, senior centers, group homes, and youth enrichment programs. Watch for updates on local distribution events. Second Harvest distributes food locally at the Lynchburg First United Methodist Church on Mechanic Street. Their food pantry is open Monday through Thursday from 8-11 a.m. and they serve a meal the first Saturday of each month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., according to the Second Harvest website.

Make sure you know the business hours before you go, and give them a call to confirm your visit .
It would be best not to stuff your automobile to the gills with food. Avoid making repeated journeys by bringing a buddy or two along to help carry some of the weight. Please check the foods condition before donating it.
Please let the food bank know you are dropping off a contribution by checking in at the front desk when you arrive. Dont just drop off your food contributions to the food bank hang around and get a feel for what theyre all about. There is a possibility that you may acquire knowledge about local food insecurity and hunger. Ask if there is any way you may contribute as a virtual volunteer if you are unable to help out at the food bank physically.
Your contribution will now be sorted and stored until the community needs it. If you want to make the most of your time at the food bank, recruiting some assistance from your pals is a great plan.
